Maico, or Maicowerk AG, was a German motorcycle manufacturer known for producing high-performance motocross, enduro, and road racing motorcycles from the 1950s through the early 1980s. Before declaring bankruptcy in 1983, Maico established itself as a dominant force in motocross with models like the MC 250. This standout model features a 250cc engine, a lightweight steel frame, and advanced long-travel suspension, earning a reputation for agility and durability. This combination led to multiple victories and podium finishes in national and international competitions, with riders like Adolf Weil and Ake Jonsson solidifying Maico’s legacy as a builder of championship-caliber bikes. Said to benefit from a previous restoration, this 1980 example comes finished in the traditional combination of red and yellow. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.

The MC 250 is built on a lightweight, durable tubular steel frame. True to its motocross roots, its body panels are minimalist, covering only essential areas like the fuel tank and rear fender. The bike features a slim, ergonomically designed fuel tank, wide handlebars, a flat seat, and a high-mounted exhaust pipe. This example comes finished in the traditional shade of red with bold yellow graphics and iconic Maico racing decals. It is said to have been completely refinished as part of a restoration, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Power comes from an air-cooled 250cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a large carburetor. The rear wheel is driven through a 5-speed manual gearbox and chain drive system. It is equipped with long-travel telescopic front forks and a rear mono-shock suspension, while front and rear drum brakes provide stopping. The seller states the engine and transmission have previously undergone a complete refurbishment, and no outstanding maintenance items have been reported.

This bike is offered with a bill of sale.

The seller would like you to know: “Iconic dirt bike from Germany,  vintage now, totally refurbished From A to Z, fitting very well in any high end Collection, that You can bring to the track!”

Two days ago, I drove the four hours from Massachusetts to the Canadian border in Vermont to collect a VeloSolex bike I bought from Alex Bert thorough Pcarmarket. Alex was flexible enough to wait two weeks, while I was traveling, to close the transaction. Upon my return, we agreed to meet on the Canada side of the border to close the transaction and deliver the bike. We met at the southbound Duty-Free store parking lot, and within minutes I had a proper, signed, Bill of Sale and the bike loaded in my rental SUV. Clearing customs took less than ten minutes (no taxes due), and by 5:00 PM I was back home in Massachusetts with the VeloSolex. The entire delivery and import process was trouble-free, much easier than I anticipated, and a pleasant experience.
