An additional Beetle model was added to Volkswagen’s model range for the first time in 1979, a new larger version called the 1302. It was marketed as the “Super Beetle” in North America where it came standard with the “L” (Luxus) Package as well as a 1,600cc engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection from the 1975 model year onward. This 1979 example represents the last year of convertible production worldwide and the final year of the Beetle in the U.S. and Canada. It comes finished in Diamond Silver Metallic and is said to have been preserved in highly original condition by three prior owners in VW collections. The Beetle is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.
The Super Beetle was offered as a larger version of the standard Beetle with an extended wheelbase as well as longer and wider Karmann bodywork. In North America, it came standard with the Luxus Package which added rubber bumper moldings. The Cabriolet version was further distinguished by two additional sets of slits on the engine lid. This 1979 example is finished in DIamond Silver Metallic with a black convertible top, a fender-mounted antenna, dual chrome mirrors, Karmann coachwork badges, rear “Fuel Injection” script, and chrome trim on the bumpers, headlight rings, window surrounds, and lower rear quarters. It rides on a set of original 15” Lemmerz GT wheels with a matching spare wheel mounted in the front trunk. The seller describes the exterior to be preserved in excellent overall condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is upholstered with black vinyl covering the seats and door panels. The Luxus Package adds full carpeting, a passenger-side vanity mirror, dual rear ashtrays, and twin map pockets. Other accessories include woodgrain dashboard trim, a four-spoke steering wheel with a Wolfsburg crest emblem, front seatbelts, rear lap belts, manual window cranks, a heater, a VDO quartz clock, two-tone Coco floor mats, a locking glovebox, and an original Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. The cabin is described to be in excellent condition with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional.
Power comes from an air-cooled and fuel-injected 1,600cc flat-four engine that drives the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. Compared to a standard Beetle, the newer Super version came equipped with larger drum brakes, a semi-trailing arm rear suspension, and a MacPherson strut front suspension. The seller states that the mileage shown on the 5-digit odometer is original and the car has been maintained with routine fluid changes. There are no outstanding maintenance items at this time.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, service records, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Here is Your chance to Invite the icon in your stable. Last year of production. Babied and Pampered, looking fantastic, from one collection to your own maybe? This specimen will look so good next to a 356 / 911 / 912 / 930, in a museum, showcased on a turntable inside a VW Dealership, or simply driven! Happy Bidding!”

I'm kinda surprised nobody asked about/mentioned the gas heater. That's a very uncommon feature in a very nice car.
