Up for auction is this 1979 Porsche 924 finished in Colibri Green Metallic over a beige and dark brown interior.  The original water-cooled transaxle Porsche, this 924 is a 1979 5-speed example that has been impeccably well preserved with just over 38k miles traveled from new.  This 924 was placed in storage approximately two years ago after receiving some noteworthy preventative maintenance items.  Showcasing an impeccable color combination while retaining all of its original factory specifications, this 924 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

The rare Colibri Green Metallic finish is believed to be original and is described to be in great overall condition with only minor cosmetic imperfections. Characterized by its large glass rear hatch, this Harm Lagaay designed coupe retains factory 14” “Tarantula” alloy wheels which feature black painted centers and silver outer lips.

Inside, you will find a highly original beige and dark brown interior complete with its factory-equipped Blaupunkt radio.  The cabin is shown to be in very nice condition with the only noted flaw being an area of broken stitching on the driver’s seat and a cracked dashboard.  All gauges are accessories are said to have been working properly when this car was put into storage about two years ago.

Power comes from a Volkswagen-sourced 2.0 L fuel-injected inline-4 engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle that sends 110 HP to the rear wheels.  Prior to entering storage two years ago, this 924 was reportedly treated to a new battery, new brake lines, a tire rotation, fuel injector cleaning, and replacement of all fluids and filters.  The car is said to have been stored away in excellent running order with all routine maintenance up to date.

This sale will include two sets of keys, tools, an air compressor, a spare tire, and a clean title.  Vintage transaxle Porsches are becoming increasingly valuable, do not miss your chance to own this beautifully appointed low-mileage 924.

    @Mathhead,
First off, thanks for being willing to represent this car for an unable seller. I’m sure it’s not a comfortable position to be in to try to answer tough questions.
I’ve seen this situation time and again where a person holds on to a vehicle until it’s too late to present it well or even care for it properly. There’s a lesson there for all of us.
As a car enthusiast it makes me cringe as there are no winners in those situations.

This auction seems to be a fairly unique opportunity to acquire a rare (paint to sample?) 924 that appears to be lightly used, though needing an unknown amount of reconditioning to be roadworthy.

Without the ability to see a road test or even a cold start there is risk for any bidder, especially one who cannot see the car personally.
So I hope this car finds someone to whom it speaks who will give it the attention it seems to have been missing for at least the last several years.

@Mathhead Thanks. Wish it were close enough to me to inspect and get a better feel for it's condition. If the owner had maintenance record he could share that might help. Is he the original owner? How long has he owned it and how many miles has he put on it? The math tutoring must have worked sine you are now a "math head."

@Lundclan Great comments, I agree there is something to be said there. As for the cardboard on the floor... Not a big deal really I put it down do lay down when I took the pictures underneath the vehicle. As this is an auction there is always some risk involved but I have done the best I can given the circumstances. I am presenting the facts as they have been told to me directly from the seller. Just for a piece of background not sure if it helps to know that he is a retired Math tutor who has helped all young students and adults students from the Berkshires pass their SAT's and other exam's including myself in my younger days. Selling vehicles is not his passion as he is saddened to sell the vehicle after having it all these years. I hope this helps.

Seller does not want the car to touch the ground but wheel wells and underneath indicate it has seen plenty of dirt and grime it its day. Seller does not want to show any evidence that the car works in any fashion because he is so seeming protective of the car...yet he lets the gas go bad and there are cobwebs everywhere. How do we know the odometer has not rolled over? How do we know the engine is not blown or trans broken? Why is there cardboard under the car? Covering a leak? Could be an interesting risk if the price were right but the stories do not totally add up to me. Sorry to be negative. Maybe everything really is wonderful but there is a distinct lack of evidence good or bad.

Great colors. Darn dash cracks. The 924 dash has to be one of the most terrible ones to ever be put in a car and my guess is they cracked when you drove the car off the lot.

Is the black on the wheels correct for it? And do you have the service records of the maintenance done prior to storing? I think a running/ driving video would greatly help.

  • Mathhead (seller) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@Abuong01, I do not have access to a paint meter...
@BlueWagon, Headlights and electrical's do work, seller did not want to get that going because it will kick on the fuel pump. But all electrical items are in working order.

  • co. (registered bidder) 3 years, 9 monthsago

Wow!!! Looks like this is a color to sample car- the color tag shows PTS code 99. Interesting considering Colibri Green Metallic was an available color around that time.

  • Harrdware (registered bidder) 3 years, 9 monthsago

wow - one of the few 924/944 rear cargo shades that actually works!

  • BlueWagon 3 years, 9 monthsago

Hi there- Mathhead, any info on the electrical system? Headlights, etc? Thanks

@Abuong01 I will be driving over and taking the picture of the paint tag tomorrow, are there any other pictures that may be of interest. It's a far drive for me so let's make it count.

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 3 years, 9 monthsago

Can you get paint meter readings please.

  • Mathhead (seller) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@ojdickinson I do know that the car was running the last time it was used. I did ask the seller if he was would get that preventative maintenance done prior to listing it, but unfortunately he declined to do so as he is too busy with the sale of his home.

  • ojdickinson (registered bidder) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@mathhead thank you for the information. We're clear on shipping. I am a bit concerned about "running when parked" on a vehicle where the difference in value between basket-case and pristine is relatively small. This car is gorgeous and ticks the right aesthetic boxes. My 911 was parked for 15 years before I purchased her. Same situation with fuel - she fired right up with new fuel, battery, and plugs. So I suspect the same would be true here... but if the owner could make that small investment, it might double the value.

  • Mathhead (seller) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@ojdickinson Hello OjDickinson thank you for the question. I can facilitate the shipping if need be, if there is a courier service you prefer to use I can make the calls needed. That is if you win the auction. It is my understanding that the "buyer" will pay or pick up the vehicle post auction. I don't want any confusion. "PCar" Correct me if I am wrong.
Since the car has not been used in 2 years and just has been sitting the garage, the seller chooses not to start it up because of the fear of "old gas" hurting the engine etc... Other wise I would. He suggests doing some preventative maintenance prior to turning it over.

  • ojdickinson (registered bidder) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@mathhead thanks for facilitating the sale. Will you also facilitate shipping? I think she needs to relocate to SoCal... May we have a start-up video?

Beautiful 924. The Porsche club needs this color in its "Rennbow" list: https://www.rennbow.org/

Hello Everyone, I am glad you are interested in this Porsche. I want to let everyone know that I am the Realtor of the owners Porsche and am helping him with this transaction as the owner is up in age and does not have internet nor an email (very old school). For this reason I am assisting him with this and am willing to answer (relay) all questions back to him and back to you in a timely fashion.
As you may notice, all the pictures are taken from inside his garage. He is very cautious with this vehicle and would not allow the car to touch the ground outside due to the fact that we are in crux of mud season out here in the Berkshires. I will do my best to get all questions answered.
