Produced in July of 1979 as one of 1,200 examples designated for the U.S. market, this 911 Turbo comes factory finished in Black Metallic over black leather with optional Sport Seats, an electric sunroof, and a limited-slip differential.  Its four previous owners were all members of the Porsche Club of America, the last of whom acquired the car in 2015.  Showing approximately 35k miles on the odometer, this 930 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This 911 Turbo comes finished in Black Metallic (A2) and features wide fenders protected by black stone guard decals in the rear.  Other equipment includes a rear window wiper, Tea Tray rear spoiler, and a front valence mounted with fog lights and a lower chin spoiler.  Factory 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels come dressed in a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE760 tires dated from 2017 with approximately 9/32” of tread remaining. The seller describes the car to have been kept in very good condition housed in a climate-controlled garage while showing only a few imperfections on the lower rear fenders. Paint meter readings also show thicker measurements towards the right rear of the vehicle, additional images are provided in the gallery.

The black full leather interior was appointed with optional Sport Seats from the factory along with a black headliner, electric sunroof, and an electric exterior mirror for the passenger side.  The original Blaupunkt radio has been retained and a set of aftermarket instrumentation has been added below the dashboard including meters for voltage, cylinder head temperature, and exhaust temperature. The leather upholstery is described to be very soft and free of any tears or scuffs.  The dashboard is also said to have been well preserved along with the carpeting and door panels. All accessories and instrumentation are reported to be fully functional.

The turbocharged and intercooled 3.3L flat-six engine can produce as much as 265 HP and 291 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip differential.  The seller states that records are available showing consistent service dating from the most recent owner’s purchase in 2015. Images of the undercarriage can be found in the gallery.

This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a clean title.

Thank you to all the bidders and PCARMARKET for hosting the auction. I especially appreciate TheBaron and jcbfff for the exciting finish. Congrats Jason, I know you will enjoy this car. Best wishes to all. We look forward to future auctions with incredible Porsche motorcars.

@jcbfff I would agree. Saw the same thing at Amelia. Porsche sold for low estimates but they sold. Bubbles do burst but I think we still have room. All things indicate we are mid-upper cycle.

  • Rayr (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Congrats on the purchase, glad the Baron didn’t get it, he was going to daily it to keep the miles from accumulating on his 7K mile twin to this one??

Seems to me the war and stock market are weighing on buyer’s minds.

@PCollector1976 Thank you for your comment. Not too many people have driven this car so pretty sure I know who is making the comment. Indeed its a very accurate original equipment car and a joy to drive. You need another one! :)

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@TheBaron Totally agree on head studs. We can tell by looking for leaks at the base of the cylinder jug at the head and case. There would be oil leaks and crank case or exhaust gas remnants. You can also hear the leaks, especially at start-up. No indication of any cylinder head or crank case leaks. Happy to do compression test but time during the auction will not allow. Thank you for the inquiry. I got some close-ups of the case/cylinder seals and a good audible of cold start.

  • PCollector1976 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I have seen this car. It's a beautiful rare original example Turbo that drives nicely.

  • TheBaron (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Status of the head studs?
I have owned several 3 L and 3.3 L Turbos over the past three decades and the head stud problem is a very common issue. My apologies If I missed this subject in the presented documents. Have they been checked to see if any are broken?

@oceangreen59 After owning a dedicated Porsche restoration shop and 30 years of hands-on experience I don't find valve cover gaskets and oil lines particularly difficult. They are best done with oil change and this car just had an oil change. There is nothing on this car that is in dire need of repair or replacement. It is a well preserved example of an icon. They are not easy to find in this condition. I would encourage you to take advantage of an opportunity to own a wonderful example.

As far the paint, I encourage you to look through the documentation. I would challenge you to find more sophisticated paint metering than has been documented for this auction.
There are over 90 touches digitally recorded from upper-inner to outer-lower panels. This paint meter process fully discloses paint thickness on every part of the car. I have generously disclosed the condition with thickness, photos and a full transparent description. Please look through all the documentation before commenting.

Thanks its to bad unless you can work on these your self any repair cost alot of money .The oil even know it is not dripping has to be addressed by the new owner .Paint SHOULD BE METERED to know for sure .I GUESS THE HAMMER PRICE we will tell the real Price .Good luck to every one..

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@oceangreen59 Thanks for your interest. There are no significant oil leaks. The oil jugulars are sweating around the flex/hard joints on right side near sump but not dripping. Occasionally I can smell oil on heat exchange and I can see remnants on the left exchange. Appears to be from LF valve cover. Again not dripping Readers who know these cars know these are common issues. Honestly, oil lines and valve cover gaskets are probably due based on age alone.

With regard to the paint it looks really good. Without metering its almost impossible to detect. Whoever painted the left rear did one hell of a job. There is a very small paint blister on the very lower left fender panel. I have seen this before. Commonly due to paint prep. The rest of the car is consistent with factory paint thicknesses. Please look at the pictures closely. I tried to get some zoom at detectable angles with different lighting and defects are still hard to see. Overall the paint is very good condition, color and texture.

@Chappie I do not have any leak or compression numbers. With the low milage, driver history, frequent service history and drivability I did not feel it necessary to do leak-down or compression. I usually do compression and leak tests when there is a suspected problem. This car is no smoke, no funny noises, no misfire, no lack of power. After driving dozens of these cars this one drives exactly as it should. I am certainly not opposed to compression test but I find this 930 to be perfectly healthy without it. Thank you for your inquiry. We are getting close to the auction close. If it does not hit I’m happy to arrange compression or leak test

  • oceangreen59 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

hi Are there any oil leaks .? Was the car a repaint or orignal ?

  • Chappie (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Beautiful car. Do you have any compression or leak down numbers?

@robmsales Thanks Rob. Just when we think its the right time to sell these cars they jump! Its really hard to find unmolested turbos, especially early cars. I’m lucky to know this car and I know it well. I seriously doubt it can be replaced but space and time have their limits these days.

    Hey Matt
I sold my 79 Turbo in 2005 for a lot of money back then- I thought I was so smart- it was #1189 with the last 50 dash plack-had the buyer name - boy did I screw up, you got a great looking Porsche here good luck -- Rob

@sportscarguy3 Thank you for the complement and well wishes. These are iconic cars that were incredibly well built. Obviously we are hoping to do well. Happy to answer any questions for bidders. Good luck on your listing.

Going to be selling my 1987 930 here shortly so obviously interested in how this older Turbo does
The black / black are always the best looks for these Porsche 930s, in my humble opinion and this is a handsome car indeed
With 35,000 miles and well presented here on Pcarmarket it should do well
    Good luck all

Thanks to PCARMARKET for hosting another great auction. I'm excited to share what is known about this incredible 1979 930. It is a time capsule of Porsche's most advanced 930 development just before Porsche withdrew the "turbo" from the US market for 6 years! One of the few that remains in original condition after 42 years. This turbo is an original, well preserved piece of Porsche history. I am happy to answer any questions and provide additional information. Thanks to our initial bidder. You are on your way to owning this iconic example of wide-body, turbo Porsche. Good luck to all the bidders.
