Available for auction is this 1979 Jeep Wagoneer finished in Cumberland Green over a tan interior. A forerunner to the modern sport utility vehicle, the Wagoneer was introduced for the 1963 model year and produced up until 1991 with almost unchanged design. This 1979 example features a 360c.i. V8 engine, cruise control, power tailgate window, woodgrain trim, a roof rack, 31” all-terrain tires, and more. A replacement engine was installed under prior ownership along with a rebuild of the transmission, and the carburetor was replaced in preparation for sale along with a valve cover gasket. This classic Wagoneer is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut.

This Wagoneer comes finished in Cumberland Green with wood grain paneling along each side. The body has been refinished and some minor imperfections are present as well as rust on the driver's door, tailgate hinges, and vent window moldings. Some bubbling is also visible on the left rear quarter panel, additional images are provided in the gallery. Factory equipment includes chrome bumpers and brightwork, a roof rack, a tow hitch, and 15″ five-slot alloy wheels with Jeep-logo center caps. These wheels come dressed in a set of 31” Sport King A/T tires.

Inside, you will find a tan vinyl interior with corduroy seat inserts and brown carpeting. The carpeting, sound insulation, and front bucket seats were replaced under prior ownership and the seller notes the windows are prone to leaks and intermittently stick in the raised or lowered position. The air conditioning is not operational and some corrosion is noted on the left side of the dashboard and in the left door jamb. Just over 65k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer.

Power comes from an AMC 360c.i. V8 engine which drives all four wheels by way of a 3-speed automatic transmission, dual-range Quadra-Trac transfer case, and locking center differential. Under previous ownership, this Wagoneer is said to have received a rebuilt transmission, new fuel tank, fuel lines, water pump, spark plugs, and ignition wires. The engine was reportedly replaced under the prior owner's care and recent service is said to include an oil and filter change as well as replacements of the carburetor and a valve cover gasket.

This sale will include a clean title. An American automotive icon, this charming 1979 Wagoneer makes a great choice for any enthusiast in search of a classic 4x4.

    @CC350 The A/C was never installed your are correct. Little tongue and cheek on the comment and I apologize. The gauges work the fuel is low and the oil pressure moves but not well. It would have blown the motor had there would be no oil pressure.

  • CC350 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @Ricster65 @funoldcars brings up a good point I now don't see any AC either! Can you confirm? Also drive video- gas, temp gauges at zero. Oil pressure in the red (zero-ish) range. Do the gauges work? Thank you.

    I notice the mention of A/C ( inoperative ) however there does not appear to be any indication this vehicle was ever equipped with an air condition system. No interior vents or A/C controls no sign of any A/C components in the engine bay, is there some type of stealth aftermarket system hiding somewhere ?

    @Haltung There is your video. Highway is a bit of a treck. But took it up to speed and did a cold start for you. Amazing how good this runs!

    @Haltung Hello Haltung

    We were at Sebring this past week so I will try to get a video up if I get back to the garage tomorrow. It drives very well and I mean it’s like going back to 1979 it’s a solid wagoneer and it holds the road very well. Honestly you can hold onto this vehicle for a very very long time. They don’t make them like this anymore. They are also only going up in value.

  • Haltung (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @Ricster65 Will you be posting a driving video? What's this thing like on the highway?

    @CC350 Hello CC350

    So the windows all work as they had some bonding issues but we cleaned and lubed them all and they now are fine. The A/C doesn’t but everything else does. The horn lights etc all work and yes even the cigarette lighter works. There is no noises or chain slap it really is in fantastic shape. The frame is good with no rust as the photos depict and the rocker Panels have no rust. There was a few bubbles on left rear but the backside is solid and the bubbles are hard and are not crusted. The floorboards are all solid. This is a very solid wagoner. I would say bid with total confidence. This is a vehicle I definitely see appreciating as their are not many left in this type condition. I’ll try and get a driving video for you. As you see the area it was taken is a steep snow filled area and went right up with zero issues and will rival anything that’s being offered today. And there is no real slop in the steering wheel. It’s tight.

  • CC350 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    Hi @Ricster65 the description says the AC doesn't work and the windows stick etc but the in the comments you mention everything works? I assume that's everything except the AC and windows? Lights, horn, radio, all that good? Any chance of a driving video? Any slop in the Quadratrac chain (slapping, binding, noise?) Any chance of additional chassis and body condition pics, perhaps behind the areas that are showing bubbling and under the doors/ rear quarters/etc? Sorry for all the requests but am interested and bidding on it but would be helpful to know more. Thanks!

    @Ricster65 has this vehicle ever seen a the parking lot of a Dead or JGB show?

  • Ricster65 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    This is a great running great condition wagoneer. This is the quintessential original suv that are climbing in value. You can’t beat the old solidness of this vehicle. Bid in confidence everything works as it should and is fantastic off-road. The pictures in the field had deep snow to get up to that point and it climbed it like it wasn’t even there.
