The second generation of Nissan’s Z-Car, the Nissan S130 Fairlady Z was marketed in the United States as the Datsun 280ZX and was named Motor Trend’s import car of the year in 1979. This 5-speed 1979 example features a “slicktop” sunroof delete and comes finished in White over a red vinyl interior. It was acquired by the seller from its second owner less than two years ago and has undergone a major engine-out service including replacement of the engine seals, clutch, and master & slave cylinders. The car also features an upgraded 2.5” exhaust system with a ceramic-coated header, turbo muffler, and an electric cutout valve. Supported by extensive service history, this Datsun 280ZX is now being offered for auction out of Ohio while showing approximately 115k miles on the odometer.
This S130 is said to have been completely refinished in its original White color while under the original owner’s care in 2000. Subsequent paintwork also encompassed the engine bay, door jambs, rocker panels, and the underside of the hood. The windshield has been replaced as well. The car is decorated with custom red pinstriping and features body-colored bumpers and mirrors, chrome B-pillar trim, 280ZX fender badges, and 14”x6” factory 4-spoke wheels in a silver and machined finish. The car rides on a set of Toyo Extensa A/S II tires. Some surface corrosion is present on the rear hatch tracks and the seller notes the car has been garage-kept and meticulously maintained during their ownership.
The cabin is upholstered in red vinyl with matching carpets and headliner. Accessories include manually adjustable seats, roll-up windows, a two-spoke steering wheel, air conditioning, an original Datsun radio, and a triple gauge cluster in the center dashboard housing a quartz clock, a battery voltage meter, and an oil pressure dial. The seller notes a crack is present on the dashboard and an aftermarket switch has been installed to operate the electric exhaust cutout.
This 280ZX is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.8 L L28E inline-6 fuel-injected engine rated at 135 HP and 144 lb.-ft of torque, which drives the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The exhaust system has been upgraded to a fully welded 2.5” system with a ceramic-coated header, a turbo muffler, and an electrically operated cutout. The seller states that the engine is original to the car and has never been rebuilt, however, the engine and transmission were removed for service under prior ownership including new front and rear engine seals, a new clutch, master & slave cylinders, and a resurfaced flywheel. Other services completed by the prior owner include new tie rod ends and lower ball joints, sway bar bushings and end-links, compression rod bushings, new brakes pads and lines, a brake master cylinder, refinished brake calipers, and a brake fluid flush. The seller notes a small oil leak is present which is believed to be coming from the rear main seal.
This sale will include owner’s manuals and a clean title.
