Considered among the most capable and robust off-road vehicles of all time, the 40-Series Land Cruiser was first produced in 1960 to rival the American Jeep and British Land Rover. This 1978 example is said to have been the subject of an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration in South America before being imported to the United States and is presented with a green finish over a black vinyl interior. Reportedly driven approximately 600 miles since the restoration, this Land Cruiser is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Colorado.
The FJ40 presents a classic boxy design with a utilitarian and rugged approach. Details include rounded headlights, prominent fender flares, a removable roof, ambulance-style rear doors, and steel bumpers. This example has been refinished in its current shade of green as part of the extensive restoration, contrasted with a white-painted grille and hard top. It rides on white-finished 15” wheels mounted with Yokohama Geolander M/T tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with black vinyl upholstery complemented with green-finished surrounds and a black-finished steering wheel. Equipment includes black-faced instrumentation, roll-up windows, door-mounted grab handles, a sound system, and climate controls. The seller notes an aftermarket air conditioning system has been installed.
The 1978 FJ40 equips a carbureted 4.2-liter inline-six cylinder engine which sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller states that the engine, transmission, and undercarriage were extensively restored approximately 600 miles ago, and seasonal oil changes have been carried out upon the seller’s acquisition by the specialists at Accelerate Motorworks of Colorado. Other recent service items include a new battery, a new Weber carburetor, front disc brakes, and a new driveline disc parking brake assembly.
This sale will include a clean title.
