Finished in Black over a matching leather interior, this 1978 Porsche 928 features a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle as well as a sunroof delete. It was acquired by the seller from its long-term second owner in 2004 and has since undergone extensive refurbishments and modifications including a top-end engine rebuild, recent timing belt and water pump replacements, an upgraded Borla exhaust, a short shifter, a custom sound system, 18” 911 Turbo wheels, a rear spoiler, and much more. This 928 was previously listed on PCARMARKET and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California accompanied by about $6k worth of additional upgrades and parts to complete the restomod-style project.
This 928 is finished in Black and features a 928 Motorsports fiberglass rear spoiler, polished dual exhaust outlets, and new 18” 911 (996) Turbo wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps. The seller reports Nitto Motivo tires were mounted in 2019 and the windshield was replaced in 2004. An aftermarket satellite antenna has also been installed along with side-view mirror covers, upgraded LED lights, and removable window tints. The seller notes the front and rear bumpers were previously refinished and some imperfections are present throughout the exterior including several paint chips and fading on the left front fender. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The black interior has been customized with an aluminum accelerator pedal, a short shifter, and a new 928 Specialist sport steering wheel along with LED lights, new floor mats, a dashboard mat, and an Alpine sound system. A subwoofer has been mounted in the spare tire compartment and a small crack is noted on the dashboard. Items replaced under the current ownership include the front seat upholstery, center console tray, power window switches, mirror control, left console panel, window regulator, A/C blower, and various switches & wires. The seller adds that the odometer functions intermittently, and the car’s true mileage is unknown.
This 928 is equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 engine rated at 230 HP and 253 lb.-ft of torque stock. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller states a top-end engine rebuild and overhaul was completed by a reputable ex-factory mechanic shortly after their purchase in 2004 including replacements of the lower main bearing, oil pan gasket, catalytic converters, and clutch. Since then, routine maintenance has been observed along with upgrades including a 928 Motorsports aluminum coolant reservoir, a Borla cat-back exhaust system, stainless-steel ball joints and brake lines, a rebuilt/stiffened steering rack, Bilstein shocks, and Eibach springs. The most recent service in February 2022 included a new timing belt, water pump, wiring harness, water pump, and California smog test. The seller adds that a small crack in the chassis was previously repaired, and the car’s alignment was professionally confirmed to be within spec. A host of additional parts is included and the seller provided a comprehensive list of modifications and replacements that can be seen in the gallery.
The sale will include extensive documentation, owner’s manuals, a car cover, a spare tire, workshop manuals, and a clean title. Additional parts will also accompany the sale including an alternator, door panels, MSD Headers and cross-over pipe, and other spare and original parts.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I have owned and garaged this car for 19 years. All maintenance is up to date with the new water pump, timing belt, and wiring harness. This car has been a restoration project since purchased in 2004 and is nearly complete Modified Restoration (Resto-Mod) as a variety of upgrades are beyond the original 1978 setup, options, and original parts. This is car #58 (January 1978) and is one of a kind! Won't find another one out there for sale like this one. It comes with $6,000 of additional parts and accessories, and It’s 100% running in great mechanical shape and drives great. It has been well maintained but I have no time to finish the almost completed restoration of the car and I’m finding a new home for it with someone that loves 928s as much as I have.”

@URS6 IT was hele-arc welded a very small minor crack by experts that do this kind of repair and realignment. You can't even tell where the minor crack was and I have the alignment records too. The HDS headers and all restoration and extra parts come with the car...its a package deal only.
Bid in the amount of $7,250
Could you tell us more about the crack in the chassis that was repaired? This is a very nice 1978 and sunroof delete is cool. Lots to like here and lots of great parts (steering wheel, 18" wheels, 8" headlights, etc.). Looks like the biggest need is a respray and dashboard. This is very similar yet different than my silver 1980. If the seller or winner wants to sell the MSDS headers, I would be interested!
@jimdemar Yes they are and that was a recent repair
Bid in the amount of $7,000
Can you confirm that the retractable headlights are functioning properly? GLWTA...

I cannot understand the utility of a dash cover. It's a toupee for a 928. Dash cracked? I have a black 80. Yup, dash cracks. They aren't going to heal themselves. 5 speed should help it sell.
48th car. Having a hard time counting today.
Low production number. Number 47 for the US market for first year cars. Interesting.
@DPommery To finish the restoration, the major tasks would be a Paint job, reupholster rear seats, some minor interior work, repair/replace door panels in the carpeted area (car comes with replacement door panels and arm rests too), new door window seals, fix cracked dash, & check AC and vacuum systems plus restore headlight/windshield washer squirt system. Mechanically the car is in very good shape and runs great.
@DPommery I have no idea what that sound could be, but its not the car maybe something from the videographer that was filming.
What’s the clanging in the drive video?
“Almost completed restoration “. What need to be done to complete?
