Among the earliest examples of Porsche’s iconic V8-powered grand tourer, this 928 was produced in January of 1978 as one of just 1,139 examples designated for the United States during the model year. Finished in Grand Prix White over a rare Green Leatherette and Beige Velour Pascha interior, it also comes equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip differential.  Thoroughly serviced over the past several years and with just over 34k miles showing on the odometer, this outstanding first-year Porsche 928 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida accompanied by a Porsche Production Specifications certificate.

This 928 comes finished in Grand Prix White and rides on factory 16” Phone Dial wheels dressed in 255/50 Michelin Pilot Exalto tires from 2020.  Some areas of the car have been previously refinished, and the seller states a full professional detailing and paint correction were completed in November of 2021.  A few stone chips are noted on the front end as well as a small imperfection on the lower right portion of the nose.  Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is trimmed in Green Leatherette with matching carpets and Beige Velour Pascha inserts on the seats and door panels.  The original Blaupunkt radio and speakers have been retained and the original Pascha inserts are said to have been recently refreshed by a reputable Porsche restorer. A new gear lever boot was installed in 2022 and the footwells are lined with new custom Lloyd floor mats.  A small cut is depicted on the headliner as well as several small cracks on the dashboard.  The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional and notes the air conditioning compressor, condenser, high-pressure hose, and expansion valve were replaced under current ownership.

This 928 derives up to 230 HP and 253 lb.-ft of torque from its 4.5L V8 engine, driving the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip differential.  A new battery has been recently installed and service carried out in September of 2021 included replacing the water pump, timing belt, breather hose, air filter, thermostat, and an oil change.  The rear shocks and CV boots were replaced in 2020, and the aluminum front ball joints were replaced in 2016 along with the control arm brackets and steering rack.  Some A/C and suspension refurbishment was performed in 2015 and service carried out under prior ownership included replacement of the radiator, spark plugs, crankshaft pulley, belt roller, fuel tank strainer, and fuel hoses along with ultrasonic fuel tank cleaning and repairs to the throttle linkage.

This sale will include a clean title, the original toolkit, and a Porsche Production Specifications certificate.

Gorgeous example. the 911 is the poor mans 928. the 928 won European "Car" of the year 1979. No other "sports" car has won "car" of the year. the 928 set 2 production car land speed records at the Bonneville Salt flats in 1986 and 2020. Although a GT, the 928 is the complete tossable car with 50/50 weight distribution(vs 911 40/60). Air cooled 911 collector Magnus Walker is secretly building his 928 collection. And the 928 is an inconic movies star (Risky Business, Weird Science, Scar Face). Currently the biggest bang for the buck in exotic sports cars, its Now or Never for the 928.

@wanna123 Please send me your email and I’ll prove it as I have the documents. It’s in the photo album in my listing and it clearly says black and beige velour inserts which in pasha. Confirmed by many in the know. Thank you.

  • wanna123 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I had an 80 911 and it had pasha interior and the certificate read

    black leatherette w/grey/black velour inserts/05

That is why I was asking as 01 could be the color of the insert or the color of the pasha insert. I Googled pasha certs and I haven't found one that just has a single color noted like you have. Awesome looking car and good luck with sale but I have reservations about the pasha being in there.

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@IslaTurbine Agree Dave (owner) is a true professional and his upholstery guys are fantastic. Dave was very helpful sourcing the correct Porsche material and colors. Highly recommended.

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

A few answers to questions and clarifying.. Yes the cruise control works. Yes the power mirrors work. Yes the original radio and speakers work. Yes the power antenna works as it should. The power door locks work intermittently. All the gauges work. All the lights work. The passenger door occasionally sticks. Jiggling the manual lock opens it. No leaks of any significance. I’ve crawled under the car and it’s really pretty clean. Only some surface rust on various components but I’d call it minimum. The body is clean and looks like all original panels.

That’s a good place to have the work done. They obviously have experience with 928 seats as they worked on the Brumo’s car. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/1258226-my-seat-restoration-experience-with-sonderwerks-in-cornelius-nc-2.html

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@IslaTurbine Sonderwerks in North Carolina. I used an enclosed transport to ship up and back. The interior was in very good shape except for the inserts. We reused the original side green leatherette and just installed the pasha. They also did a new shift boot. The original green carpet is very nice. The dash has several cracks and finding the green material was impossible so we left it as is. Obviously this is a very big job.

  • IslaTurbine (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @9146max
Could you share who did the Pasha rework?

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@wanna123 The plain velour inserts were installed by a previous owner at some point to replace the original pasha. I have no idea when. The original pasha spec is 01 which is green leatherette with beige and black velour pasha. My goal was to return it to original specs from the factory.

    @wanna123 https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-porsche-928-32/

That's the car about six months ago.

The 78' petrol blue 5-speed that went on BaT two weeks after this went for 100k because it was an early Euro, that was all original, and in amazing condition. A Unicorn.

Not the case here; you can tell a lot has been redone, paint does not look original, and condition is lacking. I do like that it has LSD though.

  • wanna123 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Ok since the pasha is what everyone is bidding on can you explain whey the car previously had plain velour inserts? Also on certificate if it was pasha it would state velour and the 2 colors of the pasha such as black and white??

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@JTPi I’ll take some some additional photos for you. Regarding photo 108 I’m unsure but I’ll check it out. Regarding photo 70 that is not bondo. It is the damage I mentioned in the ad. It’s an approx 4-5 inch scratch that I touched up and a small crease (1/16 inch deep) in the metal. I think a previous owner hit a curb. Also I don’t have a lift but I’ll crawl under the car. What is your email? Thank you.

  • JTPi (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@9146max a question regarding rust. On photo 108, behind the longitudinal air box, it looks like the firewall may have rust on the vertical surface under the hood seal. Can you confirm with a few extra photos please? Is there any other rust issue on the underside, around the sills or rocker panels that have rust or repairs?
Any chance to provide some comprehensive underbody photos?
In photo 70 what is the issue at the bottom of the front right fender in front of the tire? It looks like it was a possible bondo repair with a different white paint over the repair. Any clarification would be helpful.
    Thank you!

The dealer comparing this car to a $100k example seems disingenuous. Also saying the cars pasha interior was “refreshed” raises even more questions. Look at the car with same VIN sellling on BAT in 2021 for $21k. Velour interior and sellers overstatements tell me not to bid on this one.

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@wanna123 The pasha was delivered from the factory. I provided the Porsche factory build sheet and color codes to support that. The owner I bought it from verified the mileage as being accurate. Of course the car is 44 years old and it’s history is mostly documented but I can only tell you what I’ve been told. If you look at the condition of the car and it’s paperwork. it seems legit. Good luck.

  • wanna123 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Ok, is the pasha interior the original interior or ??? To be clear as the wording is a bit clever in the ad, did the car come from the factory with a pasha interior or plain velour? What do you have to substantiate the miles?

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Another interesting bit. In 1978 the 928 was Car of the Year.

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

This is the 259th 928 built and it’s a manual. The majority of 928s were automatic. This one is very early production and a unique color combination. Seeing it in person takes you right back to the 70s. It looks very small compared to new Porsches.

@9146max - THIS car sold on BAT for $21K. Some work as been done. The two conditions - BTW - are not similar at all, the model, year and mileage are.

  • 9146max (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Abuong01 No I’m sorry I don’t. I posted all the documents I received. The seller I bought the car from verified the mileage was accurate.

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Seller - is there any records showing the mileage prior to 2016. Thank you

@IslaTurbine The clutch is good. Good movement and smooth decent engagement as it should based on my memory of 928s. First early 5 speed manual I’ve had in a while. No noise from torque tube. 2nd gear is good. No grinding. As usual in 928s, need to warm up gearbox before aggressive shifting.

  • IslaTurbine (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    Great looking early ‘78!

@9146max could you comment on the condition of the clutch? Has it been gone through recently? Any noises from the torque tube? How’s 2nd gear? Any grinding?

Good afternoon PCAR. I’m excited to present an early production very original 1978 928 5-speed manual with exceptionally low miles. The color combination is extremely rare. The original German sourced pasha inserts were recently restored to factory specifications and they look fantastic and are period correct. Mechanically the car has been updated and received comprehensive servicing in the last several years. It’s quite exceptional. This car is not perfect but it’s easily a 9 out of 10. I would like to mention in my opinion it is a highly collectible early 928. Please contact me with any questions. I encourage anyone to stop by and see it in person. Good luck.
