Custom built by Compass Racing for it owner and completed in March 2018, this 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe has been extensively modified and fitted with a 3.6-liter flat-six engine sourced from a 993 Carrera. The body retains its stock fender flares and is equipped with SC/RS-style bumpers while the interior has been completely redone with new leather upholstery, custom-made seats, RS-style door panels, and a host of quality aftermarket accessories. Benefitting from extensive mechanical refurbishment and with approximately 40k miles driven on its rebuilt engine, this one-of-a-kind 911SC is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
The body received a complete glass-out repaint in Black by the specialists at Best of Show Coachworks in Vista, California. The rear end has been restyled with a 911 SC/RS-style bumper and taillight assembly as well as a custom one-off spoiler inspired by Porsche’s iconic ducktail and IROC designs. An SC/RS-style bumper was also fitted in the front including inboard relocation of the oil cooler. Other custom details include modern projector-style headlights, aero-style mirrors, and a Bronze Cerakote finish for the window surrounds and brightwork to match the 16” Braid Fuchs wheels. Measuring 7.5” wide in front and 9” wide in the rear, these wheels were dressed in a set of new Yokohama Advan tires in 2018 with less than 1k miles driven since. The Compass Racing decal on the rear lid is easily removable should the next owner choose to do so, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin has been redone with Tobacco brown leather upholstery including custom-made GTS Classic seats and RS-style door panels with red pull straps. The interior is lined with new RS-spec carpeting and vintage-style Tobacco/Black floormats and features a vintage MOMO Prototipo steering wheel as well as a custom Wevo shifter with a billet knob. The instrument dials have been refurbished by North Hollywood Speedometer and customized with an orange tachometer face. The factory A/C system has been removed although the fresh air blower is said to remain fully functional along with all other gauges and accessories.
Derived from a 993 Carrera, the 3.6-liter flat-six engine was rebuilt by Mark Kinninger of Black Forest Automotive. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox with custom 924 Turbo synchronizers. A custom Magnaflow exhaust has been fitted and the suspension has been rebuilt with new Turbo tie rods, control arm bushings, and front wheel bearings. The steering rack was refreshed, the CV joints were repacked, and the control arms were cleaned and refinished with black urethane coating. The brakes were also overhauled with new lines and a new master cylinder.
Displayed at the Luftgehkült Porsche gathering twice, the seller states this impressive 911SC resto-mod is ready for a new owner to enjoy. The sale will include a clean title.

@skidmarks Mark, you gave us an amazing starting point to do this build. It's full of lovely details mechanically, and in the interior/exterior. Showing the paint to a prospective bidder today, the quality of work from Best of Show is evident. And I don't think the amazing wing has been given its due in the listing: it came from a discussion beckaircooled and I had about how we felt there should be something between a ducktail and an early-era turbo tea tray. This wing, which is functional for both cooling and downforce, is a true work of art. Having been fabricated at our shop, it is a unique one-off piece.
Bid in the amount of $32,000
@skidmarks This one is awesome, I do wish I had the EXtra funds that I think this is going to bring. This one along with that green 1975 that sold recently is going to haunt my dreams.
@karlt When I started working at Black Forest Auto in 1987 this was my favorite customer car. Triple black and immaculate. Very fussy customer and he waxed his inner fenders. I couldn't afford a nice SC so i had to buy longhood so i made do with a few 911E's and S's. I maintained this car for 20 more years and eventually got to buy it in 2008. When I sold it to Karl many years later it still had original paint and not even a door ding. The 3.6 in there makes 300hp all day long. I only sold because I bought a 996 GT3.

@reeda007 I'd be pleased to show you the car today. Please DM me with your contact details (posting mine in the public forum is against the rules) and we can arrange to meet up.
Is the car available today to take a look at if I come down from Anaheim? If so, where could we meet up?
@dversdzn I would be completely confident driving this car from California to Chicago.

I too cannot find the videos???
@karlt I cannot find the videos on here
Would you be confident in this beauty being able to make the drive from Carlsbad to Chicago?
@kgishere thanks for your comment. I've uploaded a few photos of the car, taken today (Sept 27), as well as a few videos, showing a cold start, walk-around, gauges in operation, and a couple of driving videos (my cinematography and sound recording are not winning awards... there's air noise in 1, shaky cam in 2 and mounting bracket noise in 3). If there's anything else you, or any other bidder is interested in seeing, please ask.
The car was last registered until August of 2021. We weren't driving it and didn't feel the need to pay the DMV for a car that was sitting in the shop. I'm not sure where the $1k in fees are, as I was at the DMV in person on Friday (the 23rd) and was told nothing was owed. If there are fees due, we'll cover them before transferring the title to the new owner. The title is clean and in my wife's name.
Driving the car today to take the videos, I am reminded what a true joy it is to carve through the mountain roads near our house in it.

Please include a cold start , and a driving video...... It would inspire confidence in the bidding....
Best!
@kgishere Okay, regarding pictures, I see that you mentioned that it is from different photo shoots. Would be nice to see recent pictures of the car.
Thank you!
Okay, I'm confused. Here is the pull from the DMV
WARNING:
PLANNED NON OPERATION-REGISTRATION DEFERRED
RECORD STATUS:
09/16/15 1960LEGACY LICENSE PLATE
11/28/19 SMOG DUE 08/16/21
09/13/17 PREV LIC 2FOM630
04/04/21 SMOG INSPECTION AT STAR STATION REQD
Also, Looks like there is at least 1k in fees, so yeah, fees are DUE (nothing crazy, but good to keep in mind)
Also, on some pictures car appear with 2019 stickers and on some with 2018, makes me feel like this pics are not current.
Can we please have cold start videos, walk around and some driving, this will greatly help with confident bidding.
Thank you.
Bid in the amount of $1,978
VERY cool looking car, well done. (The people in photo #17 are taking photos of the wrong thing.)
Good luck with the auction... beautiful!
@kgishere kgishere: I have confirmed with the DMV that no fees are due on our car at this time.
550bryan: our car is currently titled and registered in California.
Billan: The mark is a scrape; I've uploaded a detail photo which hopefully one the moderators here will add to the gallery. The exhaust is *not* dented.
Beckaircooled: just so everyone knows, Beckaircooled was intimately involved with the build of this car, including the custom fabrication of the fabulous wing. This car was a labor of love for all involved.
Man that is a good looking SC!
It is absolutely gorgeous
Bid in the amount of $911
Great looking car with very well thought out and tasteful modifications!!
Pic #222, it appears that the exhaust pipe had a road strike. Is it just scratched or also dented? Thanks!
Great looking SC , I assume it can't be smogged in Calif?
How much $ DMV fees are due?
What an absolutely wonderful looking build - hats off to Custom Racing. Will be keeping a close eye on this one.
Hey there!
We're excited to present our vision of the perfect 911SC resto-mod to the PCarMarket community. This is the first auction we've had on this platform.
A quick note: our car was listed on this site a couple of years ago, and was removed before the auction ended, at our request. We had placed the car with a local aftermarket dealership on consignment, with the understanding that it not be put up on any of the auction sites. When we realized it was, we informed PCM, who cancelled the listing.
Our 1978 911SC, which we believe is one of the nicest examples of a narrow-body 3.6L 911 around, is now up for auction on PCM with our blessing. I'll be checking in regularly to answer questions and give my thoughts on comments.
The photos are from a couple of different photo shoots that we did a few years back, with the car having covered very few miles since (basically trips from San Diego to Luftgekhülts in 2018 and 2019). We'll be posting a cold-start and driving video in the next day or so.
I look forward to the auction and hope you like what you see!
