The Chevrolet Corvette (C3) was chosen as the official pace car for the 1978 Indianapolis 500 and a series of limited-edition recreations were produced as showroom display models for each of Chevrolet's 6,502 dealerships at the time. The limited-edition Indy Pace Car Corvette represents approximately 15% of the total C3 Corvette production run and came with the L82 V8 engine, unique two-tone paint, spoilers, Indy graphics, and a host of premium features as standard equipment. This example was acquired by the current owner in 2019 and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
This Indy Pace Car Corvette features a special two-tone color combination of Black and Silver Metallic with a deviating Bright Red pinstripe. This limited-edition Corvette was also equipped as standard with spoilers at the front and rear as well as Indy 500 graphics, specialized badging, glass T-top roof panels, sport mirrors, and 15″ alloy wheels which are currently dressed in Goodyear Eagle GT 2 tires. The seller notes both doors and rear quarter panels were previously refinished and the paint on the hood and front fenders are believed to be original. Several imperfections are depicted throughout the exterior including areas of fading paint and stone chips. The headlight motor is inoperable and both lamps are fixed in the up position. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cockpit is trimmed with special silver leather upholstery and grey carpeting. Accessories included with the Indy Pace Car package (RPO Z78) consist of thin shell-design lumbar support seats, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel, a rear window defogger, and an AM/FM stereo. The seller indicates the carpets are significantly worn and the fuel gauge works intermittently. All other gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.
As much as 220 HP and 260 lb.-ft of torque comes from an L82 V8 engine which featured a new lightweight aluminum intake manifold for the 1978 model year. The rear wheels are driven by way of a three-speed automatic transmission. The seller indicates a new power steering pump was recently installed, although previous maintenance history is unavailable and a full service is recommended to be carried out by the next owner.
This sale will include owner’s manuals and a clean title.

@gkp200 my mistake, indeed it’s an L48
Bid in the amount of $10,000
The VIN indicates it is an L48 car. The valve covers are also L48 covers. Can you add a photo of the engine stamp suffix code or provide the three letters stamped there.
@gkp200 yes, it’s definitely an L82 engine.
Are you sure that is an L82 engine? It sure looks like the 185 HP L48.
