Finished in Black over a matching interior, this 1977 Porsche 911S Coupe was originally purchased in Pasadena, California. This 911S came factory-equipped with Fuchs forged aluminum wheels, an electric sunroof, power windows, cruise control, a leather-covered steering wheel, and a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car is said to have entered long-term storage in 1997 and was treated to a comprehensive mechanical restoration beginning in 2012 which included a rebuilt engine, Mahle Euro RS piston and cylinders, oil-fed chain tensioners, a PMO 40mm carburetor kit, MSD ignition, and several other performance upgrades. The car also received new Bilstein shock absorbers, new ATE brake calipers, upgraded Turbo tie rods, and a completely rebuilt transmission with a short shifter. Accompanied by a factory build sheet and its original stamped service booklet, as well as all work receipts, this well-sorted 911S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.

The exterior of this Coupe is said to have been refinished in its original Black paint color during previous ownership prior to 1997. It features silver anodized window trim as well as a factory sunroof and rectangular front fog lights. Other details include body-colored headlight rings, a polished exhaust outlet, a driver’s side mirror, and M400 6"x15” Fuchs forged aluminum wheels dressed in Goodyear Eagle GT 205/60 tires dated 2013. The wheels show production date codes from 1976 and 1980, while the spare wheel in the luggage compartment is dated 1974. Two very small dents are also noted on the driver’s side door. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The black interior features original reclining bucket seats and door panels reupholstered in black leather along with a new dashboard, headliner, and sun visors. The original carpets have been retained aside from the new driver’s side floor carpet, map pocket, and center tunnel carpet which were all sourced from Auto’s International. Factory options include a leather-covered steering wheel, power windows, and cruise control. The car was also equipped as standard with pop-out rear quarter windows, an electrically heated rear window and outside power mirror with an electric defroster, fresh air ventilation and heating controls, door-mounted stereo speakers, oil level and pressure gauges, a quartz clock, and an electronic speedometer with an integrated trip odometer. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories are fully functional and the speakers and radio have been removed.

Power comes from an air-cooled 2.7-liter flat-six engine that was completely rebuilt during the mechanical restoration. Work included: all new valve train components machined to the fly-cut cylinder heads, new Mahle Euro RS piston and cylinders, upgraded Raceware cylinder studs, washers, nuts and rod bolts, planed intake valve covers, E-grind camshafts, an oil bypass modification, oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners, Turbo 930 exhaust valve covers, B&B stainless heat exchangers and dual inlet muffler, a PMO 40mm carburetor kit, all new oil lines, MSD ignition, and Porsche braided stainless-steel ignition wires. The 5-speed manual transaxle was completely rebuilt with all-new Rauch & Spiegel components, a short shifter, Rauch & Spiegel billet coupler, and a Sachs power clutch kit with a new flywheel. The suspension received new Bilstein shocks, sway bar bushings, Turbo tie rods, and new front wheel bearings. Adjustable rear spring plates were also previously installed. The brakes were overhauled with new ATE calipers, rotors, pads, hoses, and hardware. The seller states two oil flushes have been completed since the engine rebuild and all valve clearances were checked along with engine hardware torque specs.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a collection of records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: Extraordinary example of a completely sorted out 1977 Porsche 911S Sunroof Coupe. Properly rebuilt 2.7 Engine with all necessary machine work performed, estimated 230+HP. 66,300 miles showing. 1700 miles on the all-new drivetrain. Performance and handling are exceptionally stronger and smoother than the original configurations. Note: The Porsche flat 6 engine reaches its greatest volumetric efficiency point at 2.7 liters. The 917 Porsche racing engine consisted of two 2.7 Liter engines joined together, which produced 1500 HP.

@rhmoritz The engine was chosen from another 1977 911S that we had on hand. It turned out to be a good decision after full disassembly and inspection. The engine in the car had been rebuilt and we felt far more comfortable starting from the ground up rather than following previous work. It provided a very solid platform for our complete rebuild, necessary improvements and HP modifications.

  • tomneedles (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@222837 just shy of 6'3". I currently own a 928, 911SC, 944 and a later model 997. All of them provide the necessary room. Thank you for your reply. Tom

  • 222837 (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@tomneedles In my experience the early 911's will accommodate drivers up to about 6'4" without the seat being adapted. They are one of the better sports cars for tall drivers. The "Narrow Body" refers to fender flares, the interior space I believe remained the same from 1969 to 1997. How tall are you?

  • tomneedles (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

William, how is the legroom and headroom in this 911? I ask because I'm on the taller side and I know this is a narrow body coupe. Thank you. Tom

@mtbnc Good Day, The exhaust is now B&B Stainless Steel heat exchangers and a dual inlet muffler. The beautiful sound is a combination of this exhaust system, the PMO carburetors and the long power band created with the E-grind camshafts. Thank you for your question. Best, William

  • Vortex (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

If the A/C was removed previously has the evaporator mounting hole in the smuggler box been filled ?

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@222837 good morning I appreciate your prompt reply to my questions about the radio and the Smog
I guess I will look at the pictures again to see if there has been any exhaust modification. Also re-read the details of the car.
I believe you mentioned it was a California car and FC I assume it was Smog compliant and registered here
Unfortunately, I’ve had problems with other cars, well, one specifically, that I could not Smog and ended up selling at a substantial loss
Once again, appreciate your time and information and you have a very good looking Porsche. here

  • 222837 (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

Yes, there was what appears to have been an air conditioning system installed and removed before my engagement with this 911. I I thought it best to leave them visible to have the car viewed honestly but have a block off plate made up. Most importantly even with the holes there was absolutely no rust as a result and as well there is no structural compromise.

  • Vortex (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

There appears to be a tight grouping of about 12 holes in the front suspension pan area . The pan normally has 2 drain holes .
Any idea what the other holes are from ?

  • 222837 (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

    @sportscarguy3 Good Day,

I do not have enough information to definitively give you an answer regarding registering this example in California.

The wiring for the radio and two front speakers is still in place. In regards to cost, there are so many choices including rebuilt period correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt radios, that the expense will vary but is a very straight forward endeavor.

In regards to shipping costs, Intercity just delivered a 1960 356 Super 90 from here in Hammond NY to the Los Angeles, California area for $3800.

What a clean, looking 911 classic in black my favorite Porsche. color
Very nice presentation, and certainly as suggested by the seller well sorted
Wondering about a couple of things
California smog emissions testing, do you believe that the exhaust system would pass California smog as is ?
Although the sound of an air cooled Porsche going through the gears, especially the 2.7 with an upgraded motor is a sweet sound, just listen to the nice driving videos, i’m a music sort of guy and always like to have radio and tunes as they call it in my Porsche.
Any thoughts on costs to install a decent radio and speakers, front and rear?
Also, is there a wiring available for the radio and speakers or has all that been removed completely?
I’m in Santa Rosa California and would have to arrange shipping. I’m assuming those cost would be somewhere around 2000 to 2500
I will look forward to your reply regarding this very handsome classic Porsche.

  • mtbnc (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

    Excellent job on this project.
The 2.7 magnesium case had issues. Did you make adjustments in the engine rebuild to put those issues in the rearview mirror ?

  • 222837 (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

I completely agree, having had years of experience with all the air cooled models, thanks for commenting.

  • CartBeforeHorse (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

This is a lot like my 76. Lightweight, narrow body, galvanized steel, and a 2.7 that’s been dealt with. Absolute blast. I have Mk Headers and Scart exhaust for just the right amount of raunch at 6K RPM.
This is all go and these middle year 911s are the only remaining bargains in the air cooled 911 world. Big returns ahead when everyone else realizes the above.

I have been involved with air-cooled Porsches for over 40 years and have never encountered anyone that is more prepared and more detailed than this seller. His attention to detail and skill level is unmatched and the 89 Carrera I purchased from him a couple of years back was (and is) a thing of beauty and a testament to his love of making certain that the job is done correctly the first time. I am still amazed to this day just how well it was presented.
I am a long time mid-year owner and know this car personally. These narrow body 2.7 liters are big fun and this one is as good as they come. Plenty of power and just about broken in perfectly...it truly is ready for adventure for many miles to come.

    - best of luck with the auction
