Now up for auction is this rare 1976 Porsche 911S Targa Ferry Porsche Signature Edition. One of only 200 Signature Editions built, this 1976 Targa honors Ferry Porsche with a special Cinnamon leatherette interior featuring Brown-Beige tweed inserts and a steering wheel embossed with Porsche’s signature. Refinished in Guards Red, this 1976 example has been in the current owner’s family for over 26 years and has undergone a recent service of the ignition system. An ideal running and driving project car for any enthusiast looking to undertake a light restoration, this highly collectible 911S Signature Edition is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Massachusetts with approximately 112k miles showing on the odometer.
At some point during its life, this Signature Edition was refinished in the current shade of Guards Red from its original Platinum Metallic color. The Targa top is described to be well preserved, while the rest of the exterior shows signs of age and cosmetic imperfections as depicted in the photo gallery. A front lip spoiler is equipped and the factory 15” Cookie Cutter wheels have been painted silver and fitted with Yokohama S305 tires.
Unique to the Signature Edition, this 911S features a special Cinnamon leatherette interior with Brown-Beige tweed inserts on the door panels and rear seats. The steering wheel is trimmed in tan leather and features Ferry Porsche’s signature embossed on the center. Black and red Coco floor mats have been installed along with an aftermarket leather gear knob, and the factory Blaupunkt radio remains in place. The seats and dashboard appear to have been well-kept, while the door panels and carpets exhibit signs of age and discoloration. The door armrests and pull handles are not depicted in the photos, although the seller confirms they will accompany the sale. The speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, and temperature gauges are working properly, however, the operational status of the fuel and oil level gauges has not been confirmed.
This 911S is equipped with an air-cooled 2.7L flat-six engine with Bosch CIS fuel injection. As much as 165 HP is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. The oil has been changed regularly and the seller has recently replaced the fuel pump as well as the distributor cap, rotor, and points. The transmission is described to be in strong mechanical order, while the engine hesitates upon startup and does not run smoothly until reaching full operating temperature. The seller suspects either a vacuum leak or fault with the CIS system to be causing the issues and recommends a full tune-up to be carried out by the next owner.
This sale will include a toolkit, interior trim pieces, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title. A perfect fall project for any air-cooled enthusiast, this rare 911S Targa Signature Edition awaits its next owner.

@TrevorSpeed very little. Any repairs & maintenance was done by me or my father over the last 26 years so not much in the way of service receipts. I do have the owners manual and it is included.

Hello All, I wanted to share a bit more of why it was off the road for 10 years, and why I am selling it. My father, who owned it for 20 years, put it away for the winter about 10 years ago. In the spring it wouldn’t start. So it stayed in his garage for a couple years while he enjoyed his 968. I then bought it from him in 2015, and then it sat in my barn for a couple years while I enjoyed my 993 and SC. A couple years ago I decided to get it running. I thought it was fuel related so I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Still nothing. I then replaced the plugs, rotor, points, distributor cap and that did the trick. Now, why am I selling it? Last year I picked up a 1970 911 (think, barn find) that hasn’t run in over 20 years. It is a full restoration project, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I won’t get to this car for many years, so I decided to sell it and make some room in the barn. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
@CVS911SC It shifts well. No issues last time it was used and I changed the transmission fluid last winter.

@sadedon Honestly, I have no idea. It was open during the photos. I will check it tomorrow afternoon when I get back to the car and respond then.
@NE911 Thanks - the trunk looks like it does not close all the way, was that just during the photos?
@sadedon Yes it is drivable. I drive it in and out of the barn all the time. Just not registered for the road. No idea why the paint change. My father and I are at he 3rd/4th owners and we are friends with the second owner. The first owner changed the color, but I don’t know why someone would do that to a rare signature edition car, but they did! No accidents.
Is she drivable at all? Meaning, do I need a trailer or can it drive onto the shippers truck and can I drive her off the truck and into my garage?
Any accidents?
Also, why the paint change?
@Habari2 The car has not been on the road in about 10 years, but the transmission and brakes were all in good shape when it came off the road. It has been stored in a heated/air conditioned barn. Here is what I would do to quickly get it on the road: Change the brake fluid, fix the vacuum leak in the CIS so it starts and runs smoothly, check and reset engine timing. I have changed the transmission fluid, engine oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, distributor cap, rotor and points. I am traveling today, but I will take more pictures of the rust area tomorrow afternoon.

@NE911 that would be great, if you could take a few more photos of the areas where rust is present. Also, the car is described as a driving project in the description. Are the brakes, suspension components, tires, transmission all in good driving condition? Could you use the car as a weekend driver in its current state? How many miles have you put on the car in the past three years?

@Habari2 The rust is localized to the driver’s side, rear rocker panel area. The photo shows the rust has created a hole, so I would recommend a repair in that area. The passenger side does not show the same rust damage. The rest of the body is solid, with some surface rust present. The brake master cylinder looks like it was leaking and created some corrosion in that area, but doesn’t seem to have gone through the floor. Surface only. I hope that answers your question. I am happy to take more photos if that would help.

@NE911 @NE911: Thanks. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a “Northern” project as I live in Boca Raton 7 months a year. I will give the car some thought, however, as I do like it.
@BarryLe That's a hard question to answer. Yes, the car does need some love, which is why I described it as a project. It doesn't need much to become a solid fun weekend car, but to bring it back to the original color and condition would be quite a bit more work. I have no idea on cost, but the best "restoration" shop I know in New England is Automobile Associates in CT. As far as the engine goes, it is possible in was rebuilt before our ownership, I just can't say for sure. Then engine runs strong, so it might just need a reseal to deal with some of the leaks. Hope that helps.
@NE911 @NE911: Car looks a bit rough for my stable but I do like it. It looks like it needs paint, a fair bit of interior upholstery work, and perhaps an engine rebuild. Do you have a sense on cost to redo your Targa to a high standard? If you were going to restore it, where would you take it in the greater Boston area?
@BarryLe The engine has not been rebuilt during my family’s ownership. It does have a couple small oil leaks. Happy to show you the car if you would like.
