This 1976 Datsun 280Z was reportedly fitted with an Alpha One Ferrari 250 GTO fiberglass body kit in the 1980s. After being kept in long-term storage, the car was acquired by the seller from its original owner in 2017 and subsequently serviced with an overhauled fuel system, brakes, suspension, new ignition components, carpeting, and more. A faithful recreation of what many consider to be the most beautiful car ever made, this Ferrari 250 GTO replica is now being offered for auction out of Massachusetts.
The fiberglass bodywork is modeled after the Ferrari 250 GTO, featuring covered headlamps, integrated fog lights, functional front air intakes, fender vents, a polished fuel filler cap, and an integrated rear spoiler. Traditionally finished in red, the exterior is decorated with chrome trim, Ferrari emblems, Scuderia fender shields, polished Ansa quad exhaust tips, and chrome 15” wire wheels with three-eared knockoffs. The Hankook tires show 2015 production date codes, although they were mounted within the last 1k miles while the car was kept in climate-controlled storage. The seller notes the panel fitment is excellent and the paint remains in very good overall condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The black vinyl interior includes new carpeting, aftermarket bucket seats, blue racing harnesses, a Nardi wood steering wheel, a polished aluminum shift knob, and manual roll-up windows. The seller notes the gauges and windshield wipers are inoperable, and the driver’s door latch sticks.
The Datsun’s 2.8-liter L28 inline-six engine is equipped with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and delivers up to 170 HP and 177 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. Service in 2024 included new front and rear strut inserts, sway bar links, tie rods, steering rack boots, brake pads and rotors, and a new brake master cylinder. Other maintenance performed since the seller’s purchase in 2017 included removing and cleaning the fuel tank, replacing the fuel pump, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, ignition wires, and exhaust manifold.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Originally acquired from the original owner who sourced it directly from the factory in TX, the factory supplied the 1976 Datsun 280Z for the donor car. This has stayed in a private collection for its entire life, always in climate-controlled storage. For the last 20 years, it has been driven to the local Larz Anderson Italian Day in Brookline, MA, where it was one of the highlights of the event. This is a great attention-getting 1960s-look that is a blast to drive anywhere.”
