Up for auction is this 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 finished in Delphi Green Metallic over a brown leatherette interior. Among the latest iterations of the Porsche 914 sports car, this 1974 example was delivered new in California featuring a fuel-injected 2.0L engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car earned a Porsche Club of America Manhattan Circle Trophy in 1995 the same year it was featured in Porsche Panorama magazine. In 2006, this example was also featured as the cover of Brian Long’s book, Porsche 914 & 914-6: The Definitive History of the Road & Competition Cars. Reported to have been cared for by its original owner up until 2012, this rare Delphi Green Metallic 914 2.0 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey.
This 914 came factory finished in Delphi Green Metallic, an exceedingly rare shade borrowed from Volkswagen’s color palette and offered on the 914 model from 1973-1974. Details include black vinyl sail panel covers, chrome horn grilles, a single driver-side mirror, and 15” wheels dressed in Yokohama tires.
The cabin is trimmed in brown leatherette upholstery with matching carpets, a black dashboard, and basketweave pattern inserts on the seats and door panels. Equipment includes heating and ventilation controls, manual wind-up windows, brown Coco floormats, a removable black roof panel, and a suite of analog VDO instrumentation. The 5-digit odometer currently reads approximately 14k, which is believed to be the car's original mileage.\
This 914 is equipped with an air-cooled 2.0L flat-four engine featuring Bosch fuel injection and an output of up to 95 HP. A 5-speed manual transaxle drives the rear wheels. Other features include 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes and independent suspension front and rear. Some mechanical work was carried out in 2012 after the car had been sitting since 1995, and there are no outstanding service items reported at this time.
This sale will include some documentation, a copy of the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title. Beautifully presented in its rare factory color combination, this 914 is ready to be driven and displayed by a new caretaker.

If the car had 13k original miles, why would it need a rotisserie restoration? Unless it was left outside to the elements and neglected? And if the mileage is real, then why not provide receipts of repairs etc...showing the dates and mileage. Seller, can you provide repair receipts to verify the mileage history?
Porsche COA's on 914 are not always accurate. I had a 1975 914 with two COA's issued. One has the car as red with standard vinyl seats and the other COA had the car as Nepal orange with plaid seats. During the time I was involved with this car it did not have a heated rear window.
The COA states there is a rear window defroster installed. Was this removed?
This is why documentation is so important.
Hey everyone, to the best of our knowledge the milage is as said. We purchased the car with that mileage believed to be true with no other indication prior to this that it may be inacurate. The car is a show-winner that has been well maintained over the years and is still believed to be highly original. I wish everyone good luck today in the final hours and a happy new year to all!!
It will be interesting if the seller adjusts his description and reserve with the input from two previous owners. Mine is an undocumented 57k 74 delphi 2.0. The majority of these sales are based on faith, goodwill and of course condition
@Drozenboom The seller believes the mileage is original. I believe the odometer has turned once. Most of us car nuts are very are aware of how "documented" low mileage effects value. Again, documentation is key. I would have remembered if I had documentation verifying a 10,000 mile example of a 1974 914. It would be a "unicorn" if you will.
I currently own a 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder with 8,100 documented miles. If I ever sell it the documented mileage would be the headline in bold print.
Side note: Sway bars were an option in 1974. This example did not have that option. However she is "dialed in" and drove great under all conditions.
Again, none of this takes away from the fact that this is the BEST example of a 914 that I have ever come across. It exhibits extreme pride of ownership.
@ltodaro do you know the true mileage?
Hello, I am the gentleman in Scottsdale who purchased the 914 in early 2012. I was the third owner. The Hemmings feature article by Jeff Koch in July, 2012 was also when I owned the car. The car was also featured in the Hemmings Sport and Exotic 2014 calendar (June 2014). When I sold the 914 to a person in SoCal I included a copy of the Hemmings magazine. 2014 calendar, maintenance receipts, awards and trophies. Are they included in the sale? The person I sold it to resold the car within a couple months. His only contribution was to drill and apply the hood badge (just not right IMHO). Looks like approximately 4,000 miles have been added since i owned it.
I have owned many British, German and Italian collector cars. All in very, very upper level quality. This 914 was the nicest of all. Obviously a show winner. The color is INCREDIBLE in person and stuns anyone who sees it. The next owner will be very pleased to own this gem. GLWTA !
@IGB911 and @mmorgatstein I have know this 914 and the Bay Area owners from the late 70s. Our families were very good friends and we did many activities, travel and race events together. This morning I talked to his wife who confirmed they were the second owners of the 914. They purchased it in 1975 or 1976 from a private party. She also confirmed she used it for many years to commute to their office. Most of the restoration and refurbishment was done by myself with the owner assisting with much of the detail work. I can assure you that this 914 does not have the mileage as stated on Pcar Market or the Gooding auction. I know some of the Gooding staff and also David Gooding. They are one of the most highly regarded auction companies and would not compromise their reputation stating anything other than what they believed to be actual mileage. The fact they believed the odometer mileage to be original attests to the quality of the refurbishment and show standards of this 914. I would say someone in the the ownership history after the Scottsdale owner, who I also know very well, misstated the mileage. That is a unfortunate event, however this is one of the finest 914's you will find with a show history above and beyond any other. Other than a few minor details it appears to be in the condition I last saw it in around 2015.
This is very nice ‘74 914 that’s been discussed on 914world a couple of years ago when it was for sale at Gooding & Company. The only item that looks questionable are the instrument gauges. The silver dot gauges were only used on the early build ‘74 cars….the gauges were left overs from the ‘73 parts bin at the factory. The last of the silver dot gauges were installed in late September / early October ‘73. This is a late build car built in June ‘74. I seriously doubt the mileage is correct.
Beautiful 914 but also confused by the description combined with the very detailed comments from lsr911. Was there a rotisserie restoration done and what are the actual miles? 14k vs over 100k paint a pretty different picture. Please clarify and many thanks in advance.
Beautiful car - I am a little confused by the description. Has any work been done to the car since 2012 or has it been in a collection sitting?

@lsr911 I am not sure who you know that owned the vehicle but I don't believe the statement about the miles to be accurate. I am including a link below from a 2019 Gooding Amelia Auction that I hope helps to clear up any confusion.

Knowing two prior owners I can clarify some history on this 914. The Bay Area California owner during the show quality restoration work was not the original owner. He purchased the car sometime in the 1980s. The 914 was shown in his as purchased condition in many PCA Zone 7 and 914 club events. Later wanting to show the 914 on the national PCA level it had a rotisserie restoration using as many existing parts as possible or new original parts. The engine and transmission were not rebuilt as they were in good internal condition with good engine compression. Both were cosmetically restored to as new appearance. At that time the car had approximately 100, 000 miles, plus or minus. After restoration it was again show in PCA Zone 7 events and finally at the PCA Porsche Parade in 1995. At that event it was awarded 1st place in the 914 division and advanced to compete for the Manhattan Trophy for overall best in show. As I remember it finished second and a comment was made " It would have been awarded 1st it it wasn't a 914". After that event the 914 was placed in dry storage until about 2011. The owner was no longer able to drive and the 914 was transported to Arizona and refreshed after sitting dormant for six years. All fluids were refreshed and minor appearance and mechanical items attended to.
As indicated in the listing picture file the 914 was shown in Arizona at the PCA Phoenix Flight Zone 8 Event. Later that year title was transferred from the Bay Area owner to a Scottsdale Porsche enthusiast.
I have the exact same car albeit with 30k more miles. It will be interesting to be where this ends up. Good luck

Beautiful car ! My first Porsche was also a green 1972 914. Loved it. It did everything well. Kept it for 25 years. Can you tell me if there is a radio system ? Don’t see it in the pics. Clear documentation of mileage ? Clean car fax ? Records ? Number of keys , books, manuals , etc ? Thanks
Sweet little time machine. BTW, we're in Rockland; where are you in N.J.?

@Nybuilder Undercarriage and engine photos will be added soon, in regards to your question about a dent, it is likely a glare or a weird angle as the car has no dents.
@mmorganstein: please comment on the condition of the battery box. Also are there any drive train leaks. thanks
Looks like a fine example. My first Porsche was a green 914. Do I see a small push dent on the passenger side quarter panel?
Has the car been painted recently or is the paint effectively original . Can you add more photos of the undercarriage and engine compartment. I can imagine it is immaculate but photos would help if bidding.Carfax?

Wowwee, that is NICE
Are there any photos of the engine bay and the undercarriage? Were the images and videos shot recently and depict the car in its present form? Do all the electricals work?
@mmorganstein: What are the tire date codes….any rust, scratches, or dings? Do you have any service records? thanks
@mmorganstein: do you have any pictures of the undercarriage? When were the videos taken?
