Finished in Phoenix Red over Black leatherette upholstery, this 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 was completed in October of 1973 featuring optional chrome bumpers, an electric heated rear window, and equipment for the United States.  Additional items include Fuchs alloy wheels, Appearance Group accessories, and a Mohn ski rack.  It was sold new from Tom Cartstin Porsche/Audi of Tacoma, Washington, to its original owner who is said to have been a prolific writer and children's book illustrator.  It remained with the first owner for 17 years and subsequently became part of a large and well-known Porsche collection in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it remained for years.  It was eventually acquired by the current owner, a Porsche Concours judge with over 25 years of experience, who kept the car as true to its original form as possible.  Having since won several 1st place awards including Best of Class at Das Renntreffen in Miami, this 914 2.0 is now being offered for auction by its caretaker out of Florida showing accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This example came factory finished in Phoenix Red (G5), a 914-exclusive color offered from 1973 to 1974.  The car also came factory equipped with optional chrome bumpers and features U.S. specification bumperettes, integrated front fog lights, dual chrome mirrors, black vinyl sail panel covers, and a set of factory 15” Fuchs alloy wheels mounted with Michelin XZX tires.  A vintage aftermarket Mohn ski rack has been installed and mounted with period Rossignol Strato 102 skis. The front right quarter is said to have been previously refinished to address a scratch and the seller notes several small road-going chips have been touched-up with genuine Porsche paint. Original factory labels are in place and the seller adds that the factory-applied undercoating remains intact and in very good condition, while all body panels exhibit excellent fitment and hardware. The fragile aluminum trim pieces at the trailing edge of the Targa bar have also been kept in remarkable shape.

The cabin is trimmed in Black leatherette (11) upholstery with matching carpets and basketweave pattern inserts on the seats, dashboard, and door panels.  The Appearance Group center console includes an analog clock as well as gauges for oil temperature and battery voltage. There was no radio or antenna equipped from the factory.  The footwells were lined with new custom Coco floor mats in January of 2022 and an OEM German-made center tray cushion was fitted between the seats.  The center console temperature gauge is said to run cool, while all other instrumentation and accessories are said to be accurate and working properly.

The original numbers-matching 2.0-liter flat-four engine (GA009763) is present as is the original fuel injection system. A 5-speed manual gearbox drives the rear wheels. Throughout the current ownership, routine oil and filter changes have been completed annually.  Other maintenance highlights include repacked wheel bearings, new axle boots, a new accelerator pedal, and throttle cable in 2016, fuel injector testing and optimization in 2019, and a new battery in April of 2022.  All of the shifter bushings have also been replaced within the last 500 miles.

This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a clean title, a car cover, a Deltran Battery Tender Plus, all concours awards, a new Porsche distributor cap, OEM points, seven quarts Valvoline VR1 20/50 Racing Oil, an original 1974 dealership sales brochure, a period Mohn Ski Rack with a pair of period Rossignol Strato 102 skis, a Porsche key fob, a Porsche front vanity "Porsche" license plate, two features Gold Coast PCA magazines, a period scale Revelle model, the original delivery book, jack, tools, and spare Fuchs wheel wrapped in a Michelin XZX tire.

    @MCShack Hello MCShack:

    Thank you for your comments. You obviously are a Teener!

    I believe the VIN error you mention was a transposition error but there are enough pictures shown of the correct vin to authenticate the car. Good catch!

    Yes, Fuchs means Fox in English. This car came from an important Porsche collection and I do not doubt the authenticity of the wheels. In any case, the wheels would have been added well before reproductions hit the market.

    I have discussed the tachometer in a previous post. No one can prove if it was replaced or an end of run part. I will include Brad Mayer's business card with the sale should the buyer want to speak with him regarding this. Brad is considered a 914 expert. We believe the tach is original to the car but silver dot tachometers are plentiful and inexpensive should the new owner want to pop one in. Believe me, we would have done so if we could have proved the tach was a replacement. ?

    Thank you for corroborating the chassis, Karman and body stamping numbers. I always welcome such insightful and positive input!

    Lastly, thank you for your well-wishes. They are much appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    RM

  • MCShack (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @PCarMarket The VIN is shown incorrectly in the details, it should end in 904459 (Not 094459) as all 914/4 VINs start with 47Y29##### as on the CoA which shows the correct number and as seen in pics #59, #59, and #123.
    As for the Fuchs, they show the Fox head logo which would normally authenticate the wheels as original Fuchs, but those things can be faked or forged these days. The reason for the fox head logo is Fuchs is fox in German, or fox is Fuchs, whatever, so I've been told.
    I'm not sure what is going on with the mismatched tach and speedo gauges, I've never seen one silver center with one black center gauges on the same car unless one was a replacement. I've seen much earlier 914s with all black center gauges but never seen one so late with silver center gauge unless it was a replacement.
    This car chassis #4019575 which translates to start production date of Monday, October 1, 1973, being the 75th car started that day. The DOT sticker shows a date of 10/73 which matches with the Karmann tag chassis # and rear trunk chassis stamp. VINs within this range have similar chassis #s and production dates per the 914 registry but all I have checked have black gauge dial centers. GLWA

    @rhmoritz Hello rhmoritz:
    Thank you for your kind words!
    If by anti roll bars you mean sway bars, no, unfortunately my car does not have them. However, they are available so should you want to install them that can be accomplished. If you are the successful buyer, I will help you source them for the car if you want to add them. They are an easy install.
    In regards to the heater, yes, it works as it should and the cabin truly gets toasty.
    Thanks for your questions and don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any others.
    Keep 'em on the Road,
    RM

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    This car did not come from the factory with the optional anti-roll bars, correct? Are they available from Porsche or the aftermarket? Should this wonderful example migrate north, is the heater functional? Thanks!

    @Rico914 BTW, if you look at the top of the shock tower bolts in the frunk pictures you will see dabs of paint that the assemblyman put on them to indicate that they were properly torqued. Those are original factory build markings and as they are undisturbed, the shocks are also original. You don't see those markings that often!
    Best,
    RM

  • rsjg911 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @Rico914 Hello Rico and thank you for your note and complement!
    The 914 came from a notable Porsche collection in Ft Lauderdale and the owner was also a renowned Porsche shop owner for over 40 years. He represented the car to me as original mileage and I had no reason to doubt him based on his reputation in the Porsche community and the original condition of the car.

    With respect to the paint, the previous owner took a paint meter all around the car while I was there. It consistently read 4 except for the front right quarter panel which he had resprayed due to a scratch. That panel measured 8 on the paint meter. The paint is original on the exterior, frunk, trunk and engine compartment.
    The few blemishes/stone chips that are on the car were filled with Porsche paint and are mostly the size of a pin head or less. A couple are larger but smaller than a pencil eraser tip. I took a number of pictures showing the blemishes next to my finger that you can enlarge to get a better idea.

    Thank you very much for your questions and please let me know if you need further information or clarification!
    Best,
    RM

    Hi Seller - Beautiful car. I don't believe I saw any info regarding mileage. Do you believe this to be original? Also...based on lack of overspray, etc., paint appears original. Can you confirm this? Thanks!

    @Fastauto Hello Fastauto:
    Thank you for your question!
    Removing the ski rack is simple. Only one bolt that goes through the rear bumper into the tow hook receptacle and three small bolts that are located on the bottom of the Targa bar. All four holes come with factory caps which will be included with the car. If the winning bidder desires, I can remove the ski rack prior to shipping, pack it in the trunk and replace the caps.
    Please let ne know if you have any other questions and Thank You!

  • rsjg911 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @BrentK Hello Brent:
    Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind thoughts!
    Your questions are NOT nit-picky, rather astute and I am happy to address them.

    You are correct, the 1973 2.0 (S model) came fully equipped. The 1974, to lower the acquisition cost (remember fully loaded 914s were approaching 911 cost) the previously standard features became options. My car's Porsche Certificate of Authenticity stated optional electric heated rear window (Tacoma, WA. delivery!), chrome bumpers and US equipment. Therefore, the GENUINE Porsche center console and gauges and GENUINE Fuchs alloys were dealer-installed options (I added the ski rack and center tray cushion.) As previously noted, the temp gauge runs cool...but it works.
    I have uploaded photos of the factory stampings of the Fuchs wheel. They should be uploaded on Monday. However, here are the stampings. 914.361.011.01, 5-1/2J X 15, 0.280910 AS1.62, 573/VW G.

    We have debated about the tach. This car was the 4459th 1974 built and left the assembly line in 10/1973. Often times they would use up last year's parts for the next year's model until they were gone. We suspect this is what happened with this car but honestly, we don't know. We have seen "mixed" silver dot and black dot gauges in other early transitional cars. These points have been confirmed in a conversation I had with Brad Mayer a decade ago and Brad is considered a 914 authority.

    On the rockers...they are solid. You can see one in picture 159. Check out the door seams; they are near perfect.

    The hell hole photos are 136, 141, 142, 144, 146 and 147. The hell hole is solid with original factory paint.

    The brake calipers have slight surface rust as I had just washed the car in the morning (it didn't need it) before I photographed it. No worries there. The brake pads are almost new and the car stops as it should and doesn't pull to one side when braking.

    I believe I have addressed all of your concerns but if I haven't or you have other questions, please LMK and I will respond back as soon as possible.

    I look forward to your bidding on my car and again, thank you for your kind words and excellent questions/observations!

    Hi,
    Beautiful, beautiful 914 but I have some questions maybe you can answer.

    74 options were more ala cart as opposed to 73 when you got it all with a 2.0. This car was something of a stripper that someone spent the time and effort to add on to. It obviously has had the center console added later and in the process the fuel gauge still has the temperature gauge. I’m assuming that one doesn’t work and the center console does. True? Is the console genuine or aftermarket? Are the 2.0 alloys genuine since it didn’t come with those factory either?

    Also the tach is later 914 (black center) vs the gauges to either side that are silver center. Was the tachometer replaced at some point?

    I assume the rockers and hell hole are good given the state of the rest of the car. Surprised there hasn’t been a request for more pictures.

    Any thoughts on why the brake calipers are rusted? Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before.

    Sorry to be nit-picky. When these were $4000 cars those things didn’t matter but do as values have risen.

    All in all it’s a great looking car I’m looking forward to bidding on.

  • rsjg911 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @rhmoritz Hi Rhmoritz and thank you for your questions.
    YES, the ski rack is completely removable. The rear section screws into where the tow hook (included) would normally go. If you remove the rack there is a silver plastic cap (included in the sale) that you push into the bumper to cover up the hole. The top part of the ski rack also unscrews (3 screws) from underneath the Targa bar. They also have 3 black plastic caps (included) that you press into the holes. Not many people know about these 3 holes or why they were there.
    All of the services are up to date. Fresh oil and filter were changed 250 miles ago and the points were adjusted (NOS Bosch OEM points, distributor cap and air filter will come with the car.) All of the shift bushings were replaced at the same service, the battery is 2 weeks old and all of the wheel bearings were repacked, although they didn't need servicing. She is ready to drive and enjoy.
    To be honest, the tires are older but have minimal crazing in the sidewalls, primarily because the car was stored in an air conditioned collection for a number of years prior to my ownership. The previous owner replaced the tires when he purchased the car and then stored it in his collection. One could change them out of an abundance of caution prior to a road trip but honestly, they are still in very good condition. Tge spare was changed at the same time and has zero miles.
    Please let me know if you have any other questions and again, thank you for your interest in my car.
    RM

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    Are the ski rack brackets removable? All service items up to date? Other than the tires, any other areas need attention prior to spring/summer driving?

    @robmsales Hi Robmsales:
    Thank you SO much for your kind words!
    I am away from the house until 6PM tonight and I couldn't tell where the paint blemishes on the car were from the pictures either. LOL. I'll let you know as soon as I get home but in the meantime I can tell you that the tires are older, maybe 10 years. I could not find the date stamps on the outside, they might be on the inside of the mount. I did see that they are manufactured in France.
    On the carpets, BOTH sets convey with the car, so one set of front and behind the seat factory carpets and one set of brand new front-only Coco mats.
    There will be a few more goodies that will be delivered with the car. The new owner will be getting a lot of go-withs.
    I'll post again this evening with the blemish locations.
    Best,
    RM

    Hey rsjg911- Wow, what a great well kept 914- good colors, etc.
    On the Michelin XZX tires- they look old- can you send the date on them- in pictures of tiny chips in the paint- views 65-66-67- where are these on the car? I figured out #68
    On the carpet inserts, picture 73 shows a black set, and 89 and more offer Coco mats.
    Are you selling the car with both sets? or just one.
    This 914 will bring some great money - good luck and thanks for your help and time

    Hello and welcome to my auction!
    I've owned five 914s since 1971 and this is as nice as they come. I usually only drive her to shows and Porsche events and while filming the videos for this auction fell in love with her all over again. She pulls strong through all of the gears, shifts purposefully, and runs true, straight and smoothly. I'm sure the new caretaker will love her as I have.
    The car Is on hand in my garage so if anyone needs additional photos or videos, please let me know and I will get them uploaded ASAP.
    Thanks for taking a look and Keep 'em on the Road!
