This 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa is said to have been the 15th example produced in the series and is finished in classic Sahara Beige over Black leather upholstery. It is 1 of only 236 2.7 Carrera Targas that came to the US from 1974-1977. It was factory-equipped with a ducktail rear spoiler, a rare fiberglass hardtop, and manual roll-up windows. Prior to the current owner’s purchase in December 2016, where it has been stored at 65 degrees year-round in a climate-controlled garage, this vehicle was treated to an extensive custom restoration completed over 5 years (2000-2005) including a bare-metal repaint, OEM steel fender flares, IROC front and rear valences, factory black leather sport seats, new upholstery, Carrera RS instrumentation, a short shift kit, power-assisted brakes, new Koni shock absorbers, and a rebuilt 5-speed manual transmission. The original flat-six engine was also rebuilt and upgraded to a 2.8-liter displacement along with new PMO carburetors, a resurfaced E-cam, MSD ignition, powered and polished heads, Turbo valve covers, updated chain tensioners, a stainless-steel sport muffler, an RS fan shroud, and much more. The car weighs approximately 2,400 lbs. and offers a claimed output of over 240 horsepower. Driven less than 9,300 miles since the completion of its no-expense-spared custom restoration, this rare 1974 Carrera Targa is now being offered for auction out of Washington.

During the restoration, this 911 was stripped to bare metal and fitted with OEM steel RS fender flares and IROC front and rear valences. The body was professionally refinished in the factory-specified color of Sahara Beige along with its rare fiberglass removable hardtop. A specialist restored the original ducktail spoiler, the antenna hole was filled in, and the car was fitted with a new windshield, rear glass, rubber seals, and trim pieces. The exterior has also been color-sanded and polished for a lustrous appearance. Equipment includes new H4 chrome bezel European headlights, hood-mounted Cibie rally lights, contrasting black mirror, Carrera script side stripes, and original polished 15” Fuchs wheels.

The interior has been restored with a new black dashboard, leather door panels, carpeting, and factory black leather Sport Seats. The restoration also included a new factory Sport steering wheel, custom black and yellow Coco floor mats, an aluminum ignition surround, aluminum button caps, aluminum gauge bezels, new stainless-steel Carrera door sills, a Porsche short shift kit, and a rare Blaupunkt Berlin 8000 radio with an equalizer and updated Blaupunkt speakers. The gauge cluster was also fitted with a rare Carrera RS 180-mph speedometer, 7,200-rpm tachometer, and new LED lighting.

The car’s original 2.7-liter flat-six engine has been completely rebuilt and upgraded with 2.8-liter Nikasil pistons and rings, ported and polished cylinder heads, a resurfaced E-cam, MSD ignition, Porsche RSR spark plug retainers, Clewett plug wires, 930 valve covers, a red RS fan shroud, and new PMO carburetors tuned by a renowned specialist in Portland, Oregon. Engine work also included new bearings, chains, and gaskets, an updated tensioner kit, new valves with bronze guides, PMO carburetor linkage, a PMO fuel block, a fuel pressure gauge, a rebuilt oil pump, new oil lines, K&N air filters, watershed PMO air cleaners, a resurfaced flywheel, new stainless-steel exhaust exchangers, a stainless-steel sport muffler, and a new heavy-duty battery.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox that was completely rebuilt with new sleeves, synchronizer rings, 1st and 2nd gear teeth, gaskets, a new aluminum clutch, and new shift bushings. The braking system has been rebuilt and modified for power assistance and the suspension features new Koni shock absorbers. More recent work includes the installation of a bump-steer kit, 930 tie rod ends, corner balancing, wheel alignment, carburetor maintenance, clutch cable adjustment, and new shift bushings. The seller indicates over $80,000 (20 years ago) was invested in the car’s restoration (not including the cost of the car) and two binders containing exhaustive and chronologically ordered invoices will be provided to the next owner. The car has been driven approximately 1,600 miles under the current seller's almost 8 years of ownership.

This sale will include extensive restoration and maintenance records, the original owner’s manual and sales literature, a Blaupunkt radio manual, a complete original toolset, a Porsche tire pressure gauge, a first aid kit, mechanics rags, an emergency triangle, decklid badges, and a rare 1974 Porsche Pococo blanket, and much more.

Hahaha. Sorry I made a lot of comments at the end saying I took it off and that it was going to go to the highest bidder. Sorry you missed that. For both of us.

  • MstBFst (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

I never saw the reserve come off I had 63911 in the drop down and decided to wait send me a couple Xanax to co with the 3 fingers of Pappy I’m going to need congrats on the sale!

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 monthsago

Yes he did indeed. I thought it was going there as well, but I had a weak moment right before heading into the MRI, maybe it was the Xanax - haha, and I thought my removing the reserve would spur some active bidding right at the end. Bad decision. I originally wanted 95k for the car, and it’s worth every penny of that, so my (your) loss is his gain. It’s worth way more than what it sold for. But oh well. I’m sure it’s going to a good home.

@b.flippo — yes the car was originally white. But as stated in the full description, this car was stripped to bare metal and finished in the factory specified color of SARAHA BEIGE (not Bahama beige.) see pic 316 for color chip. A $20,000 paint job 23 years ago. Equal to $40k today.

Hello all, I know that most of the bidding on this site usually happens in the last 10 minutes. And I’m sure this one will be no different. But I do want to let everybody know that I will be stepping into an MRI for a torn rotator cuff a little before 1:00 today, right when the auction ends. Unfortunate timing. So it’s very possible I will not be available for the last 5 or 10 minutes of the auction. Therefore if you have any last minute questions about the car please use the “contact seller” button now so I have time to address it before I go MIA. Good luck everyone. Hoping someone ends the day a happy new owner.

Haha. No worries @galevin. I just wondered if you knew something I didn’t.

But for the community, I do want to express again that while there is a reserve set on this car, it is a fair reserve, so if you have any desire to have this beauty in your garage, bid with confidence and bid to a fair price, and you just might find it there.

  • Galevin (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

    @dawgfan1214
I’m sorry. It’s not what I meant to say. I meant to say the opposite of what I said. I know it’s a 6 figure car. Sorry

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 monthsago

Nice to see some action mounting. @galevin — not sure why you would say we are close to the reserve on this as: 1. You have no idea what the reserve is. And 2. Let me assure you there’s a ways to go. Maybe it was to garner the very comments that I’m now providing.

However, I can tell you I did set a very fair reserve on this car, so bid with confidence as this is an amazing car.

I just added 4 new pictures. Three of them show the entire build list from the prior owner that I bought it from. Pretty crazy when you see it listed this way. Don’t miss it. And the last one is the authentic Porsche Certificate of Authenticity that shows that this is the is a true matching numbers chassis and engine.

@mibow wish I could help on this but have no idea. I’m sure someone in this great community will know.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 monthsago

Thank you @foxleen. Appreciate the assistance.

  • Foxleen (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

@GT4Driver Very simple to do. The car should have holes in the body and all you need to do is cut through the carpet and buy the seatbelts which are available from multiple providers. Make sure they come with the mounting bolts/hardware. Would take less than 30 minutes depending on how careful you are cutting through the carpet.

  • MIBOW (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

Would someone please explain to me the alignment of the "Carrera" script relative to the door gaps. Is it somewhat random from Porsche or did they use a guide and there is a "correct" location for it? Thank you.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 monthsago

@gt4driver while I can’t comment on the specifics of what it would take to add them back on both sides, it clearly can’t be too difficult as it appears they were previously there. This does seem odd, and I’ve never even noticed it until you asked the question, because I usually have the rear seat backs folded down, but if you look at pictures 110-112 & 114 you can see there is the male side of the seatbelt on the passenger side rear seat. The belt is not there on the driver’s side rear, but there does appear to be the bolt that it would easily connect to, which is also visible in the pictures. So likely very doable with minimal effort or expense. Bit one thing I do know for certain, you’d be the coolest dad on the block if this was a family cruiser. GLWTA.

  • GT4Driver (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

Anyone have experience putting seat belts/lap belts in the rear of these? Hard to do? This would be a nice family cruiser if that’s a simple “mod”

@BoxsterGT - Yes, there are a lot of invoices to keep track of. All of those reside in two notebooks the new owner will receive, but I wanted to take each one out of the plastic and capture a picture, in chronological order, for the individual who wanted all that detail. All but I think 3 of those are from the build, and if I recall, those other 3 are more upgrades done at Rothsport near Portland … the shop that makes the motors for Rod Emory’s 356 Outlaw as well as the 4.0L for the Gunther Werks cars. I am not aware of anything specifically regarding the fuel lines for a 74, and there have been no issues whatsoever, but knowing the extensive build on this car and the shop that built the motor — John Walker — anything that would have been concerning would have been addressed. It only stands to reason that someone who is spending $150k in upgrades (in today’s dollars) is going to fix a known weak point. LOL. Again, no issues with it in the last 20 years since the car had been finished and driven 9300 miles.

In regard to the flares, I believe the details of the build say they are OEM metal RSR flares from Porsche. The individual who built this car was trying to make an RSR replica, not an RS. And even built the motor to the RSR standard, at least to what I recall. So hope that helps.

  • BoxsterGT (registered bidder) 7 monthsago

Difficult to follow the invoices and individual repairs.
Please tell us about the very important failure-prone fuel lines found on only the 74 models.
Also, a minor observation, those flares are too wide for an RS. Look like "turbo" to me.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

@atxlonghort Thank you for the great question! The air-cooled Porsche 911 market is indeed unique when it comes to the value placed on modifications. I believe there are three key reasons why modifications are often seen as adding value in this community, and why you’ll find long waiting lists for highly customized builds like Singer ($1 million+) or Gunther Werks ($700,000+). Here's a breakdown:

Personalization and Performance Enhancements: Modifications, especially those done by reputable names like Singer or Gunther Werks—and the upgrades on this car—often improve performance, reliability, and aesthetics while retaining the core Porsche identity. These enhancements transform classic 911s into faster, better-handling, or more luxurious versions of themselves. In this car’s case, you’re getting many of those benefits for a fraction of the cost, at about 1/5 of what you’d pay for a high-end name-brand build.

Rarity and Exclusivity: Highly modified air-cooled Porsches are often one-of-a-kind, appealing to buyers looking for something unique. When combined with an already rare model, like this Carrera Targa, the modifications make the car even more exclusive. Collectors are often drawn to the added rarity and the bespoke nature of such builds, knowing they have something that stands apart from the factory-spec models.

Higher Quality: Many modifications, as with this car, are the result of meticulous restorations that improve upon outdated technology or address natural wear. Precision and the use of top-quality parts can make a modified car more desirable than a stock version that has aged poorly. When done right, these modifications breathe new life into a classic vehicle, making it a more enjoyable and reliable car for today's roads.

So what uniquely seems to be true is that many air-cooled Porsche aficionados highly value craftsmanship and thoughtful enhancements, which is why modifications can boost a car’s value instead of diminishing it.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

@bertsboat That is very true. Though once the new owner receives this car I highly doubt they would want to. And I do want to point out, to those that might not know, that you are absolutely correct. But this is not just an “early” Carrera, it is one of the very first to come off Porsche’s production line for the US market — #15 to be exact. And 1974 was the very first year that the Carrera came to the US. So from a historical point of view, this is one of the very first Carreras … of any type … to have graced the American shores.

  • atxlonghorn (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

Honest question. How come in the air cooled Porsche market owners think modifications add value? I’v seen first gen Mustang Mach 1/Boss 302’s with over $200,000 in restoration and engine work go for less than $100,000.

  • bertsboat (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

You can always un-mod this car. And for a lot less than it costs to mod it. It looks mostly stock. It’s a real Carrera and an early one at that.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

    Thanks @carbine123

  • Carbine123 (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

    Just plain cool here,!

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

Also @Stentr — In regard to the question of whether these modifications add value, I would say they unequivocally do for most of the Porsche community, though certainly not all. The individual who built this special car 22 years ago (using the mid-point of the build timeframe) spent around $80,000. For perspective, in today’s dollars, if we figured an average of 3% inflation, that is equivalent to $153,288. So that individual obviously believed these changes added $150,000 of value to the car, or I venture he would not have made them. While I am a collector of Porsches, I am also a driver, and for my tastes and desires, it absolutely added that value. It’s a work of automotive art, unlike almost anything else you will see on the road, or at a car show for that matter, whose performance and handling, not to mention the pure joy of driving, surpasses that of almost all modern cars. A lightweight, high performance, sports car is a rare joy to drive. And so for me, I decided back in 2016, that these modifications added just the value I was willing to vote for with my pocketbook. And it’s been totally worth it.

  • dawgfan1214 (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

@Stentr Thank you for your kind words. It is a spectacular car. I thought there were some pictures included with all the docs I received, but when I went through all the material to take pictures, I didn’t find any. I’m currently traveling until late Monday, but will look and see if I can find any when I return on Tuesday. Although, we do know it is a rare 74 Carrera Targa, so even without any pictures we do know what it began life looking like. Thanks for your comment.

  • Stentr (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

Dear seller, do you have any pictures of the car before all of the modifications?
All of the changes and "upgrades" might not have added value I suspect.
    Regardless, I think it's spectacular!
