Produced between 1974 and 1978 with striking Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed bodywork, the Maserati Bora was the brand’s first mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. This first-year example is one of 250 produced with a 4.9-liter V8 engine and is finished in white over red Connolly leather upholstery. It features a 5-speed ZF manual transaxle, four-wheel independent suspension, a Citröen hydraulic system, 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels, power windows, air conditioning, a Bluetooth-enabled Blaupunkt stereo, polished European-spec bumpers, and a three-spoke leather steering wheel. Delivered new to Los Angeles, California, the car was acquired by the seller in late 2024 and underwent reconditioning, which included overhauled brakes and hydraulics, upgraded cooling fans, new speakers, paint correction, interior refurbishment, and more. Accompanied by service records, a copy of the factory delivery note, and Maserati Classiche documentation, this early Maserati Bora is now being offered for auction out of Florida.

Styling of the Bora was entrusted to Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, and the bodywork features a distinctive brushed stainless-steel roof and windscreen pillars, hydraulically operated pop-up headlamps, and a rear clamshell bonnet. This example is finished in white and equipped with stainless-steel European-spec bumpers, aftermarket LED lighting, polished Ansa quad exhaust tips, and 15” Campagnolo cast alloy wheels with polished hubcaps. Refurbishment carried out under current ownership included polishing the bumpers, installing European-spec taillight lenses, and performing exterior paint correction using Labocosmetica Italian detailing supplies. The Pirelli tires are sized 215/70 and show production date codes from 2023. The seller adds that the paint is in good overall condition with very few chips or defects, and it measures 500 microns in depth consistently throughout the body. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features red Connolly leather upholstery covering the fixed-back bucket seats, doors, and instrument panel. Accessories include a black leather three-spoke steering wheel, an adjustable steering column, hydraulic seat height and pedal box adjustment, power windows, air conditioning, a quartz clock, Veglia Borletti instrumentation, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette stereo with a Bluetooth adapter. Upgraded Powerbass coaxial rear door speakers were added by the current owner, along with a hidden Rockville subwoofer and a CarLock GPS anti-theft system. The left driver’s seat bolster was also repaired, and the entire interior has been redyed with the correct Connolly 1603 red color.

Rated at 330 HP, the aluminum alloy 4.9-liter V8 engine is equipped with hemispherical combustion chambers, dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, and quad Weber DCNF carburetors. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed ZF manual transaxle. The Bora was the first Maserati equipped with four-wheel independent suspension and features a high-pressure LHM hydraulic system from Citröen with vented disc brakes at each corner. The seller indicates the engine was rebuilt under previous ownership approximately 5k miles ago, and the following maintenance was completed since their purchase in 2024:

  • Left rear hard brake line replaced with copper-nickel line
  • All six soft caliper hoses replaced with braided stainless hoses
  • Rebuilt front brake calipers
  • New ERB Red Stuff front brake pads,
  • Removed and restored the LHM reservoir with new hoses at the tank
  • Replaced engine air filter element
  • Replaced hood strut
  • Correctly rewired the Delco alternator
  • Replaced and replumbed the A/C fresh/recirc vacuum switch
  • Added coolant overflow recovery tank
  • Flushed the ZF transaxle with synthetic oil, drained and refilled with Redline MT-90 synthetic
  • Flushed and bled clutch circuit with ATE 200 brake fluid
  • All 3 fuel filters replaced
  • Balanced and installed 5 new Pirelli CN12 tires
  • New right tie rod end
  • Front-end alignment
  • Coolant replaced with 25% Prestone in distilled water with Radiator Relief additive
  • Ionic Emergency Start Bluetooth-controlled lithium battery
  • Install 2 new 2800 CFM Perma-Cool fans on dedicated circuits
  • Wrapped fuel lines with fuel line insulation to prevent vapor lock
  • Red Line 10W-60 Synthetic oil and new filter
  • New clutch hydraulic reservoir, master cylinder, MC hose, and slave cylinder installed

*The seller notes that the choke cable is inoperative.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a battery trickle charger, Maserati Classiche documentation, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This car is not a garage queen but is driven regularly, and any issues that show up that need correcting are always handled immediately.  I do not believe in passing problems on to the next owner. The car starts up immediately from a cold start and runs great.”

@montecarlobeach - thats funny. My dad had a new Bora when I was a kid. The next door neighbor not to be outdone bought a Dino. Even crazier, another Bora lived just a block away. What are the odds of that given the small quantity made? Glad you enjoyed the videos, I enjoyed that road rally immensely. I'd like to liquidate this asset and put it in the hands of someone who will actually drive it and enjoy it just like I do.

Just took a few minutes to watch the videos. Can't imagine there's a better, more useful Bora available anywhere. Disclaimer--I don't have any connection to the car or the seller. I lusted after these in my youth. On my daily ride to age group swim practice (usually facing backwards in a station wagon) there was for a couple of years a 246 Dino parked on the route. At some point, the owner traded it for a Bora. Fast forward 20 years and the two cars were similarly priced on the used market. I opted for the Dino (the right investment choice as it turns out), though have always had a warm spot for the Bora. This one is gorgeous.

@Doc18015 Agree entirely. I wonder if they're (unfairly) hurt by the brand's more recent troubles? Boras are fabulous cars that are great to drive (when they're dialed in). Exotic styling that holds up well 50 years later, and even reasonably comfortable for full-size American adults.

Maserati Boras and their sister, Meraks are severely underrated and should be defined as classic standards.......way ahead of their time from many perspectives showing very well and timeless in their design. This Bora is exceptional and should be an excellent addition to anyone's collection. Good Luck to the seller!
