This 1973 Porsche 911T Targa was acquired by the Wilson Collection in 2011 and has since undergone extensive restoration and upgrades. The car was refinished in its original Signal Orange color, converted to a soft rear window, decorated with 911S trim, and upholstered with new black vinyl and houndstooth fabric. Power comes from a rebuilt 2.4-liter engine featuring PMO Electronic Fuel Injected throttle bodies, and the chassis has been upgraded with Elephant Racing coilover suspension and larger Boxster brakes. Accompanied by records showing over $120k invested since the restoration, this Targa is now being offered for auction by the Wilson Collection out of Florida.
Shortly after the current owner’s acquisition in 2011, this Targa was refinished in its factory-specified color of Signal Orange by AJ’s Art Work in South Carolina. The exterior is trimmed as a 911S including aluminum rocker moldings, rubbing strips, gold badging, and a front chin spoiler. The original rear glass was replaced in favor of a removable soft window and the car has also been fitted with yellow-tinted front fog lights, chrome rear bumperettes, and 15” aluminum Fuchs wheels dressed in Pirelli Cinturato tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin has been reupholstered in new black vinyl with matching carpets and contrasting houndstooth seat centers. Accessories include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, vintage Becker Mexico cassette stereo, and a fire extinguisher mounted below the passenger seat. All instrumentation and accessories are said to remain fully functional, and the seller reports only minor signs of wear on the driver’s seat.
Power comes from a replacement 911/91 flat-six engine which has been rebuilt and upgraded with PMO Electronic Fuel Injected throttle bodies, a MoTeC ECU, SSI heat exchangers, performance muffler, and Elephant Racing fender-mount oil cooler kit. The rear wheels are driven by way of an original 915 5-speed manual gearbox. The suspension has been upgraded with Elephant Racing coilovers and a Tarett through-body sway bar in front along with Sway-a-Way rear trailing arms and Bilstein shocks. Stopping power has also been improved with 4-piston Boxster brakes and cross-drilled rotors. The seller states that over 100 invoices are available from the restoration including receipts for the high-end upgrades and routine maintenance records.
This sale will include a collection of records, a toolkit, and a clean title.

I'm gonna say it. This is about as close to a perfect drivable early 911 as it gets. Not too correct so you can play with. Not too scruffy such that you're always having to wrench on it. Carbs are gone. Brakes and suspension perfectly upgraded. I'd think about adding electric air and maybe one day a 3.2 upgrade but that's it and really just elective. Just a stunning update/redo/presentation. GLWA

Excellent example of a enthusiast putting the $$ in the right places. It will be surely interesting to see if there is a "fan" of this very exotic Porsche.

@BB There was a time that nothing left the collection however at the moment we are selling a few vehicles
@GRD Unfortunetly we show record that a dyn was performed but we are unable to recover the dyno sheet. Records indicate the motor might have started as 2.4 L CIS which would have come from the factory with around 140hp. Factoring in what we know about the modifications with the EFI and Motec ECU I would have to estimate gains of around 20-30% leaving us around 170-190 hp. Hope this helps!

After watching the this car drive out of that warehouse packed full of other fabulous cars, I Googled Wilson Collection to learn more about it. OMG!! Truly a one of a kind assembly of unique and important automobiles. And the tour and interview with Mr Wilson on the You Tube video was interesting and informative, to say the least. What an incredible depth of knowledge he has about each and every vehicle in his collection. I sent the video to a number of car guy pals and like myself, all were gobsmacked and surprised we’d never heard about the Wilson Collection before. Which leads me to a question I haven’t seen asked or answered. Why is this particular car being sold? Appeared to me that once a car comes into the Collection, it’s a keeper. Is this true, or do you routinely offer ones for sale? Not that any of this is necessarily germain to the auction, but I was curious and also wondered if there may be more offerings in the future. Looks like a very high quality build and I’m certain it will do well in the auction.

@mbaum Thank you for your detailed explanation. I learned something new today ?
@witz and @Cgt000 - The last year of the soft window option is actually 1973. That’s how long it stayed (hidden) in the option catalogue. The youngest soft window is a pale yellow MY 72 T. There are a handful ‘71 and ‘70 models out there.
The soft window was standard up until MY 1968, with glass being introduced as a no-cost option for that MY and most customer chose glass. Then from 1969 on, glass became standard and the soft window a no-cost option. There are about 37 softie 911S cars, and it is believed a little less for each, E, T and 912. It became unpopular really quickly due to all the usual pain of getting the window in and out due to temp fluctuation of the material and due to leaks.

@Cgt000, you are right the last soft window targa were built in late 1969 which make it a 1970
I have a 70' 911 E soft window built in 9/69.
@witz I thought the last year of soft window Targa was 1969

@Adoptagreatpet Thats a great question, and I'm glad you asked. The car was purchased with 24,162 miles as stated by the application for certificate of title when the car was purchased from the previous owner in 2011. The engine would have been rebuilt shortly after that. The car currently has 24,879 miles making a difference of 717 miles + / - a few miles since the engine was rebuilt. Most of the mile put on were mantinance miles over the last few years, that is to say we try to get the car on the road every month or two to keep things lubricated and in motion.
Might I ask how many miles were put on after the engine and transmission were rebuilt. As you rebuilt the car, you should have this information. I assume this car was tracked? Thank you
@witz Thank you!
My mistake, early Targa's have the handles. I forgot this is a soft top conversion .
Last of the factory soft top was in 1970. The installation and fit look amazing!
Bid in the amount of $20,000
@BB It looks like you're correct. Must not have been put in with the conversion.
I’m guessing since this Targa was converted from glass to soft window, whatever those handles are don’t exist here.
Thanks for the photos, but I'm talking about the handles under the Targa roll bar.. It relieves the tension from the rear window.
Pictures of the soft top taken down have been added!
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
@witz Thank you!
@witz sure thing. I'm not sure which handles you are refereing to however I see two black hooks/handles on the package tray. I will also take photos of the soft window taken down with the tonneau cover over it.
Bid in the amount of $16,000
One more thing, Can you take some photos of the soft window handles?
This looks like a well put together Targa. The soft window makes it a great driving experience!.
I like the early steering wheel and the sport seats. and big brakes. This car should do well $$$
@Acahoon I dont see why that would be a problem. Shoot me a DM

May this car be viewed in person in Jupiter ?
