Up for auction is this newly built 1973 Porsche 911 RSR Tribute car painted in a vintage racing inspired Porsche “Hippie” livery.  Based off of a standard 1973 911T, this Jon Gunderson-built RSR Tribute boasts a 3.5 L Rothsport MFI/EFI rated at 350 HP in addition to RSR suspension, 930 Turbo brakes and all-metal RSR body panels.  Having been recently featured in the July 2020 edition of Top Gear Magazine, this no-expense spared Tribute is now being offered for auction by its seller California while showing only 2735 kilometers (1,700 miles) on the odometer.

This 1973 911T was completely stripped and fitted with handcrafted metal RSR bumpers as well as an aluminum center-fill hood and ducktail rear decklid.  A hand drawn livery based off of the legendary Porsche 917 #3 “hippie” car was then created by renowned designer, Freeman Thomas, and custom painted on the car using high quality Glasurit paint.  The body of this Tribute is said to be completely devoid of any fiberglass or decals.  Other noteworthy features include all new glass, drilled door handles, all new front and rear turn signal housings and lenses, H4 headlights, an exterior oil filler and Braid wheels (9x15” front 11x15” rear) which are dressed in new Michelin TB 15 tires.

The interior has been completely redone with Alcantara upholstery, RSR style door panels, custom Recaro-type seats and a leather covered roll bar.  Other details include custom gauges, Rennline pedals and floor boards, a Wevo short shifter and RSR-style steering wheel.

Power comes from a newly built Rothsport 3.5L MFI/EFI motor which is rated at approximately 350HP.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed Euro transmission with a separate oil cooler.  Additional performance upgrades to this already impressive build include:

  • 100-L Center Fill Fuel Tank
  • 930 Turbo Brakes
  • 930 Turbo Trailing Arms
  • Dual Cylinder Master Cylinder
  • RSR Style Front Suspension
  • RSR Style Reinforcements
  • Vonn Shocks
  • Front Shock Tower Brace
  • Front and Under Fender Oil Cooler
  • Custom Rothsport Exhaust
  • Custom Lightweight Wiring Harness
  • New Steering Rack

This sale of this incredible build will include one key. Do not miss your chance to own this one-of-a-kind custom Jon Gunderson-built 911 RSR.

@Omgjon Is it street legal in California? It would be registered as a 1973 car? Thx

  • Nathanbs (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

@emptherapies engine and trans alone are likely over the current bid amount with Rothsport. An additional $100-150k of parts and sublet specialty services and likely 2500-3000 hours of his teams labor. I am in the middle of building several serious builds myself so this is isn’t just conjecture.

@Nathanbs Love this car and am tempted though half a mil is ambitious

Jon’s cars are amazing builds and in case someone thinks they are going to commit highway robbery here today I’m guessing it’s close to a half a million dollar car so let’s get the bids moving.

While the oil door was 1972 only for street cars, the side oil tank filler was used pretty consistently on factory race cars from 1967 on. Easier access to add oil during endurance races and keeping oil from spilling onto hot surfaces. Beautiful hold and one of my favorite liveries.

This car looks great. It looks very well executed. Congratulations to the seller. Only thing I would like to see would be center lock hubs and wheels. GLWTS.

@Sceptic it’s a 73 and one of our signature touches to our art series cars.

Now, the side oil filler was only on 1972 cars? And you wouldn't backdate a '73 when you are building a RSR? So is it really a '73?
    Either way, it is stunning.
