With the intent to bridge the gap between the original 356 Speedster of the 1950s and the 1989 911 Speedster, this 1973 911T Targa was acquired by the seller in 1990 at approximately 74k miles Subsequently, it underwent a Speedster-style transformation, incorporating a 1994 Porsche Speedster windshield & frame, a custom clamshell cover, a steel fabricated deck lid, a 3.6-liter flat-six engine, a G50 transmission with a limited-slip differential, and several other enhancements. A lifelong California example, this one-of-a-kind custom Speedster is now being offered for auction by its seller.
Originally specified as a 911T Targa, this example underwent a complete transformation to achieve a Speedster-style aesthetic. Professionally refinished in white, the vehicle was fitted with an electrically operated custom soft top, a 1994 911 Speedster windshield, and a hand-crafted double-hump clamshell cover. Other enhancements included the fitment of a 911S steel front bumper, a steel fabricated rear decklid fitted to streamline the rear body profile, Carrera-derived rear fender wells, and Carrera-style flair bumper ends. Additional details include black-finished horn grilles, rubber trim strips, factory polished mirrors, 993 door handles, chrome rear bumperettes, and factory staggered-width Fuchs wheels dressed in a set of older tires. A collection of images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin features black leather upholstery with matching carpets. Customizations include a modified dashboard pad and vents for the Speedster windshield, and factory seats with shaved headrests to align with the clamshell. Additionally, it includes ’89 Speedster power-operated windows with power regulators, window channels, and seals, as well as a custom-fabricated hidden roll bar extending from the rear to the front shock tower. Retractable seatbelts with shoulder harnesses are sourced from a 1984 Porsche. All gauges and electronics are reported to be functioning properly, though the air conditioner is recommended for service and the odometer was reset to "0" upon the seller's acquisition.
Power is provided by an air-cooled 3.6L flat-six engine donated from a 1996 993 Carrera, rated at 272 HP and 243 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through an upgraded 5-speed G50 manual transmission paired with a limited-slip differential. Other equipment includes an electronic speedometer, hydraulic clutch, and late-model Boxster 4-piston front and rear brake calipers.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This is the car that Porsche coulda/shoulda built between the 356 and '89 Porsche Speedster. I was inspired to build this car having seen the Stan Townsend 911 'Speedster' in 1972. In 1990, I began the project by acquiring the '73 911T Targa chassis. My goal was to create a modern 911 Speedster that would be fun, reliable, and comfortable to drive - even with air conditioning! It has been a long, and sometimes times frustrating, but ultimately satisfying project. No expense and unlimited time have been devoted to completing this build to the highest standards.”

Confused ! So not sold ! ?
Man, at $ 89 K ( plus fees ) I would suggest " very well bid "
That is the problem with " custom builds " typically you do not recover your investment in " your dream build "
Good luck all
WOW !!! A Knockout Punch from Turboman36 ! ?
Bid in the amount of $89,000

The more I look at this 911, the more I like it.
I don't see it as pretending to be anything other than what it is. It's not a resto, it's not a backdate.
Yes I made te steering linkage fit around A/C and fuel tank. Works just like factory.
I've always been a big fan of Speedsters, but honestly, thought the wide body looked a little hokey on the Speedster. This one has all the right lines. It is stunning! The project was very nicely done in selection of upgrades, as well as the fit and finish. I would guess someone will be aggressive in late bidding to make sure this one comes home to their garage. GLWA!
Did you have to modify the steering linkage to install the AC system ?
Bid in the amount of $65,000
Have not wieghted the car but I would guess close to 2600 Lbs.
3.6 and G 50 weight more than 32 and 915.
Thanks for taking/posting front trunk pics. Approx vehicle weight?
Yes I saw the car in Rancho Cordova Ca with Fred Allen.
Loved it and made one for myself.
More power and A/C with windows and a top thanks
@lbpa18 Stan Townes created the first 911 speedster that won its class twice at the Oakland Hot rod Show
Bid in the amount of $46,000
@eurosport- Thank you...Well thought out!

@Raylam88 - Here's a link to a video of the top being taken down and stowed : https://youtu.be/Q0O7-hkgHwo
It should also be posted with the other videos on the site. Thanks for your interest.
Body has less less flex than a coupe.........not BOY as in last post
About 20 K miles 1995 Injection was instaled to clean deck lid. Roll bar goes from front shock towers thru the cabin just under the clam shell to rear shock mounts. Boy has less flix than a coupe. I will liik for some pictures and post them under construction.
How many miles on the donor engine? Was the OBDII ECU used? What reinforcements were done to the chassis when the targa bar was removed?
I've seen this car in person a couple times, it's beautifully put together. Good luck with the sale.
Last 3 pictures where just added
I found 3 pictures of trunk with carpet out. 4 red hoses where air in and fan blows air through candenser and exits
down and outside of trunk.
Post pics of inside front trunk with carpet removed, please.
Bid in the amount of $40,000
I will do a video of how the top works later today. I will do it in stages I can open and put up the top by myself.
I need to get someone to video it as I wotk the top. I can do it is 3 or 4 stages with stop and start.
Bid in the amount of $32,000
@eurosport I was asking because I have a g body 911 and a 964 and none of them have the gap.
Oh is there a way to take a video on the top operating
See and drive........Fly to Sacramento,Ca and you can kick the tires and drive this Speedster yourself
the gap is in the knee pad so door will open completly
why is there a gap below the glove box?
15 inch wheels will not clear the boxster calipers. Way better to stop with more brakes
Yes. Stan Townsend was the best looking 911 Speedster back in the Day. That was 1972 and in my brain all that time. I made this so I could enjoy it year round. My wife even enjoys driving it with her friends. This is a real car fun
Porsche
Rear window zips in and out comes in a vinal bag. Clear plastic made to come out for storage when top in down.

Very nicely done. Would make Stan Townsend smile. GLWA
is the top's back window broken? looks like its not there at all
Bid in the amount of $22,000
Hello Just got back from a Party. Will get pictures and videos tomorrow.
Super trick build and can tell there was a lot of fabrication and engineering that went into this. See so many details I like, and a few things I might want to reconsider…Do you know if 15” Fuchs (instead of the 16’s currently installed) would clear those Boxster brakes? The proportion of the larger diameter wheels (and top) seem a little off on the F body. Can’t do anything about how the top looks up, but in reality I’d be blasting around with top down and picking bugs out of the huge grin on my face!
Also, could we please see pics of the front trunk without the carpet? Thanks
Please use "Contact Seller" if you have requests for specific information. I will be monitoring this auction daily, and will make every effort to respond in a timely manner.
PCarMarket photographer did a video session Saturday morning. Videos will be coming soon.
Wow, I love this car! As a big-time air-cooled Porsche fanatic, I truly appreciate when people with great ideas have the passion, time, and dedication to bring a vision like this to life. Congratulations on your incredible work, and good luck with your auction!
In the second paragraft it says a coupe>>>>>>>It was and still is a Targa vin number
This is a serious and well executed build. Kudos to the seller for not cutting any corners. The well integrated roll bar addresses a #1 concern with these type of conversion projects.
Will the seller post a few videos of cold start, driving and walk around videos?
