Representing the last of the original F-Body Porsche 911s, this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is among only 925 examples produced for the final model year. It has been owned by the same Porsche specialist technician since 1987 who performed a bare-metal restoration over the next three decades. It features a 5-speed manual transmission in place of its original Sportomatic gearbox and showcases rare factory options including Sport Seats, a rear bumper skirt, engine compartment light, noise suppression, and a dealer-installed Blaupunkt radio. Accompanied by its original Sportomatic components and a Porsche COA showing matching engine numbers, this highly collectible 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is now being offered for auction on behalf of its owner out of Pennsylvania.

This 1973 Targa has been refinished in red from its original Sepia Brown (54) color and features an optional stainless-steel rear bumper skirt, tinted glass, and a manual antenna from the factory. Other equipment includes a 911S front spoiler, polished aluminum rocker moldings, a brushed silver Targa bar, a removable black roof panel, black rear bumperettes, a chrome driver’s side mirror, and round fog lamps mounted on the horn grilles. The car wears an Early 911S Registry badge affixed to the decklid, as it has a two-digit number within the registry. The seller notes the car was stripped to bare metal and disassembled with all glass out during its repaint before it was placed in storage and eventually reassembled beginning in 2015. The Targa top was completely rebuilt and refreshed by Dave Bradly of Colorado to factory specs and has remained unfolded since. The original sound-deadening material and undercoating have been retained, and the original underbody pans are said to be in good condition. The original 15” Fuchs alloy wheels show 1972 date codes along with the trunk-mounted spare. One small scratch is noted on the windshield cowl, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been reupholstered in its factory-specified Beige leather from Autos International along with new door pockets and carpeting from Stoddard. The original steering wheel has been re-covered and the original sun visors remain in excellent condition. Accessories include factory-optioned Sport Seats, air conditioning, a loudspeaker, custom coco floor mats, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. The window regulators have been reconditioned and the speaker and vent window seals have been replaced. The factory air conditioning system is said to be functional, although the original red cloth-wrapped hose does not hold a charge. The seller adds that the original gauges are fully functional, and the odometer is believed to show the car’s actual mileage. A small crack is noted on the dashboard.

Under the care of its longtime owner, this Targa’s original 2.4-liter flat-six engine was removed and rebuilt with all new gaskets, bearings, a new timing chain, chain ramps, valve work, and fail-safe chain tensioners. The mechanical fuel injection system was rebuilt with a new belt, injection lines, and injectors by MFI Werks. The complete exhaust system is original and unpatched, simply refinished. The gas tank was replaced with one from Stoddard while the oil tank was replaced with a 930-type tank as were the oil lines and fuel pump. Engine compression and leak-down results are excellent and shown in the gallery. The car has been converted to a standard 5-speed 915 manual transaxle, and all of the original Sportomatic gearbox components necessary for installation are said to be included. The suspension components have all been powder coated and the hardware was refinished with either zinc or cadmium plating. The brake calipers were rebuilt and refinished, and new bushings were installed along with new wheel bearings and master cylinders

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, all original Sportomatic parts, original front rubber bumpers, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “The owner, a 47-year Porsche mechanic is retiring and ready to pass it on to a deserving Porsche enthusiast. He patiently restored this 911 over 37 years of ownership. Having just returned from a 20-mile Sunday drive, I can say this car is as tight and solid as any Porsche I have driven since 1977 when I started in the Porsche business. The workmanship is also top-notch. One of the finest restorations I've had the pleasure of driving! Bid with much confidence!”

Good morning bidders! We're entering the home stretch! Due to the server blackout the auction will be ending while I am traveling today. Please ask any questions before 11:00 this morning. My attendance afterward may be spotty. Try to bid early so as not to overload the system during the final minutes. Good luck with your bids...I'm quite sure there will be a lot of them!

  • robfleming1 (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

A nice little car. The Michelin Premiers are a good 15" choice. Used them on my 76 for years; flawless performance. GLWS. I suspect bidding will get hot and heavy in the next 22 hours. And if not, then Tom is going to get a really nice deal. Great photos and documentation.

This is an extremely original, well restored example. Shows much patience and professionalism in the details.
Comps on this car show the last bid should look like Jeanporsche's bid...With a one in front of it. Wish I could own it! GLWA

@Jeanporsche- Thank you for your bid. I'm pretty sure the last bid on this 911S will only be similar in the last three digits! ; - )

Good catch @Jfreeman- Sorry for the typo. Yes, Dave Brown deserves much credit. His invoice for the top rebuild can be seen in picture # 186 and his unmatched workmanship in pics# 162 & 164.

  • Jfreeman (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 1 dayago

Not a big deal, but to give credit where credit is due, the targa top on this vehicle was undoubtedly restored by Dave Brown out of Boulder, Colorado, not Dave Bradley. Dave Brown works exclusively on Porsche targa tops and is certainly one of, if not the best at restoring them.

@rhmoritz- Replacing the original red fabric covered hoses should do it...They were kept as-is due to the rarity of their existence. Will send pictures of receipts this morning. Thanks for the reminder!

@mainman- Sorry the body was prepped and painted back in the early 90's before everyone had a camera on their phone. The popular red during the 90's was Guards Red.
In Picture #1 the invisible scratch is in the middle of the picture. Pic. #2 with the camera positioned to use the reflection of the overhead light you can see a ghost like vertical line thru the horizontal lamp reflection. It was so slight I didn't bother trying to remove it.

  • maineman (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 4 daysago

Do you have any pictures from the restoration?

What color "red" has the car been painted and what year?

Do you have a close up picture of the scratch on the windshield cowl?

    Thank you
