Purchased new in Indianapolis with optional Recaro Sport Seats, this Porsche 911S Targa is one of only 925 examples produced for 1973 and represents the final year of the classic long hood 911 (F-Body). It was sold to the current owner in 1980 and had reportedly undergone comprehensive engine reconditioning before it was placed in storage three years later. Left untouched ever since, this time capsule 911S Targa was recently pulled from its resting place and is now being offered for auction out of its home state of Indiana.
This Targa remains finished in its original Light Ivory (131) paint color and features 911S-specific trim including a lower front spoiler, aluminum rocker moldings, and wider rubbing strips on the front and rear bumpers. Other equipment includes U.S. specifications bumperettes, chrome headlights bezels, and a chrome driver’s side mirror. The car rides on factory 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in Pirelli tires including a matching full-size spare in the trunk. Patina is shown throughout, and rust is visible along the edges of both front fenders, the lower passenger door, and the passenger side front bumper. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is fitted with a pair of factory Recaro Sport Seats trimmed in black vinyl with cloth centers. Accessories include an aftermarket under-dash air-conditioning system, leather steering wheel cover, and vintage Pioneer cassette radio. The interior is described to have been relatively well preserved with the most significant flaw being a tear on the driver’s seat bolster.
This 911S equips a fuel-injected 2.4L flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends up to 190 HP to the rear wheels. A comprehensive engine refresh is said to have been completed in 1982 less than 1k miles before the car was placed in storage and has not been started since.
This sale will include some documentation, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.

Final hour, and I’m here for any thoughts/questions/concerns on this unique opportunity to procure a highly-specced final-year project 911!
Two things I want to mention…
1. The tires do hold air, so it’s easy to move the car around.
2. I’ve uploaded a couple photos of us letting out some oil to show how miraculously clean it is. As mentioned and shown in the service records, the engine had a comprehensive refresh just before going into storage, and this shows that. (It’s like when they went into a half-a-century-closed Twinkie factory and let the filling out of the piping…preserved and pristine!) This is significant to us because of how (relatively) little reconditioning we believe this 2.4 flat six might need.
Anyhow, happy bidding, and I’ll be here until the end.

Hello All,
Morning update, as promised. Additional photos are being uploaded by @pcarmarket now, as well as *extensive* service records, organized by owner (of which there have been three, and the second was simply a reseller). As all parties understand, it is every record of service this car has ever seen, all of which will be included in the sale.
As the records show, in addition to the engine refresh in June of 1981, it looks as though the case and nearly all other engine components were replaced in January of 1977. This will explain why the area where the engine number stamping would normally be, is blank on this car. This was very likely a Genuine Porsche replacement case, and the total spent on this visit to dealership in 1977 was $3,478.
Again, any and all questions can be commented here or sent via DM! Happy bidding!

@Henning …While the VIN is listed above and shown in the photos as well, we are gathering all other information this afternoon, along with service records, and everything will be updated first thing in the (monday) morning.
Any update on VIN, engine and transmission number?
Thanks
@dchesrown Good Morning All. I’m Nick, and I’ll be here for any and all questions about this *future stunner* of a 911S Targa.
For anyone paying close attention, this vehicle was sitting alongside the previous barn find listing we sold here, since ‘83.
Plenty of underbody and miscellaneous detail images are being uploaded by @pcarmarket as we speak, so stay tuned for that update. A video will also be shown of the engine spinning freely and easily.
Thanks in advance for your interest, and we can’t wait to see this get into the loving hands of someone who will give this wonderfully specced vehicle a new lease on life.
Talk soon.
Can you provide a photo of the engine and transmission number please. I am assuming you do not have a COA on the car.
