Introduced in North America in 1972, the R107 replaced the W113 generation Mercedes-Benz SL and features a robust 4.5-liter V8 that was later replaced with a smaller displacement engine after 1980. This 1973 example is finished in red over black upholstery. Recently serviced, including updates to the cooling and brake systems, this well-presented 450SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with approximately 51k miles showing on the odometer.
The North American market R107 came equipped with distinctive quad-sealed beam headlights, and as a pre-1974 example, offers smaller front and rear bumperettes compared to the later models. This example is finished in red with a matching removable hardtop and a black convertible soft top. Details include front fog lights, chrome trim, and 14” steel wheels with body-colored hubcaps and Hankook tires from 2022. The seller notes some signs of paint peeling on the wheels. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black upholstery with matching carpets. Equipment includes power windows, a four-spoke steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, an analog clock mounted to the center of the dashboard, a locking glovebox, a Becker push-button stereo, and climate controls. The seller notes the fuel gauge occasionally malfunctions.
The R107 450SL is powered by a 4.5-liter M117 V8 engine that features Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and produced up to 180 HP and 220 lb.-ft. of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 3-speed automatic transmission. Factory equipment includes power steering, a fully independent suspension, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The seller states that recent service included maintenance on the cooling system and brakes along with a new battery.
This sale will include a clean title and a tool kit.
The seller would like you to know: "This 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is likely one of the very few examples with continuous 50-year ownership by a single lady and only 51,000 miles. Purchased from Mercedes-Benz of West Hollywood, it features a nearly new soft top and includes two rarely seen sets of hardtop handles and soft top tools in their original virgin black holders. The sale comes with the original owner’s manual, Becker radio manual with two antennae keys, all tools, an original spare tire, and an unused jack. Mechanically refreshed with new tires, a new battery, a brake and cooling system overhaul, and more, detailed invoices are available."

Dear Sir,
This is a Southern California delivery car, that has remained in Southern California it's entire life.
Please don't confuse this with cars that have been exposed to harsh winters and salt.
We have neither harsh winters nor salt on the roads here in Brentwood or Beverley Hills California.
The car is rust free, with original Red over black livery.
The pictures completely and faithfully represent the car's paint and condition.
You will not see any rust on the car and there is absolutely no discoloration on the fuel cap?
As for the rest if you wish to arrange for a PPI, I will be glad to accommodate you.
many thanks for your interest,
again please use the contact seller button for a full in person discussion of the car's history and condition.
regards,
JP
A really beautiful icon. Questions about the vehicle. Is the paint still completely original and can you post the paint thickness? You can see color differences on the tank cap, is that the original color? Please also take photos in daylight so that the paint can be better assessed. Would you post photos without carpets in the footwell? Could you post a compression test of all cylinders? Cars from this era often rust very badly. Therefore, it would be good if all sills were well photographed, including from the wheel arches. Thank you very much.
Hi everybody,
@Pcarmarket, please upload the new pictures and 2 other videos.
This is a wonderful original Blue Plate California low original milage car,
with just one careful Lady owner for over 50 years.
As a friends of a friend of the original, (famous lady) owner,
I was able to purchase the car and massage it back to health.
The miles are correct, at 51k, as it was a third car for the owner, and only used to run errands, (shopping) around Brentwood and Beverley Hills.
The owner, now 86, stopped using the car in 2008.
I bought it as a non runner, battery dead, tires flat, etc. but fortunately safely kept under cover in dry storage.
The car is in absolute original time warp condition,
the typical one careful lady owner, with only 51k true miles from new,
perfect dash and interior, clear gauges, beautiful paint and chrome, and now fully recommissioned and ready for use, even the A/C works well, plus all tools, manuals, Jack and spare wheel.
Mercedes could have it in their showroom today, as is.
Recommissioning included the following, see receipts:
