A predecessor to the S-Class, the Mercedes-Benz W108/W109 series were offered as Mercedes’ flagship full-size luxury cars from 1965 until 1973. This final-year example is a 280SEL 4.5 which represents the top-range W108 model with a long-wheelbase chassis and a 4.5-liter V8 engine. It was acquired by the current owner about three years ago and is now being offered for auction out of New York.
This W108 was refinished in the current silver metallic color from its original shade of Dark Red (542G) under prior ownership. Equipment includes quad headlamps, a chrome driver’s side mirror, stainless steel tailpipes, a fender-mounted antenna, and chromed trim for the bumpers, front grille, window surrounds, and body moldings. The car rides on chrome 14” Bundt wheels with Kelly Edge A/S tires. The seller notes that the paintwork was completed with glass and doors removed and the finish remains in very good overall condition apart from some minor imperfections near the driver’s door handle. The undercarriage is also said to have been thoroughly cleaned and treated with a sealant. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with Cognac MB-Tex upholstery and matching carpets complemented by wood veneers on the dashboard and center console. Accessories include a black two-spoke steering wheel, power windows, three-point front seatbelts, rear lap belts, a heater, an under-dash air conditioning system, a sliding sunroof, a locking glovebox, a quartz clock, seatback storage nets, and a vintage stereo. The seller reports all gauges and accessories are fully functional apart from the odometer and the car’s true mileage is unknown.
This W108 is equipped with an overhead-cam 4.5-liter M117 V8 engine featuring Bosch fuel injection and an output of up to 198 HP and 264 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 3-speed automatic transmission. The car also comes equipped with power steering and power-assisted disc brakes at each corner. There are no outstanding service items reported at this time.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, some documentation, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: "Thank you for visiting my auction. I owned the car for over 3 years and stored it in a garage. All maintenance is up to date. The car is completely stock with a brand new set of tires."
