Now available for auction is this Porsche 993-based 911 GT1 tribute race car.  Built on a custom tubular frame with fiberglass replica bodywork, this GT1 tribute was designed for unadulterated track-oriented performance with its center-seat configuration, 3.6 L flat-six engine and 993-derived suspension setup.  With over $175k invested in the build, this GT1 weighs in at approximately 1,775 lbs. and is legal for all PCA club racing as it uses the serial numbered tub from a 1973 Porsche 914.  Bearing approximately 25 hours of run time on the chassis and even less on the drivetrain, this GT1 tribute is now being offered for auction in race-ready condition by its seller and builder in Fallbrook, California.

Extending from its 914 tub, the tubular frame has been dressed in replica 993 GT1 body panels custom made by QRS Fiberglass. A red fiberglass gel coat was applied instead of paint for weight savings, and a custom rear wing was fabricated after being scaled up directly from a model of the real car. The bodywork is said to weigh 110 lbs. and the car measures 37″ in height, which is 2.5″ shorter than the actual 993 GT1.  This tribute sits low on 16” 3-piece BBS wheels measuring 11.5” wide in the front and 14” wide in the rear.  The sale will also include skinny wheels for transport as well as a spare GT1 body kit in white (images are provided in the photo gallery).

Inside, the driver is situated in a chassis-mounted Porsche RSR lollipop racing seat which is located in the center of the car for optimal weight distribution.  Track-oriented features include a 6-point Schroth harness, a Momo quick-release steering wheel, PI Club Expert digital dash, Tilton pedals with brake-bias adjuster and a fire suppression system with a new tank.  A full roll cage is also installed which is constructed from 1.5″ DOM tubing with .120″ wall thickness. A video of the switch panel and digital dash operation is provided in the gallery.

Power comes from an air-cooled Porsche 993 3.6 L flat-six engine which is mated to a Hewland DG300 5-speed manual transmission.  Rebuilt in 2005 with approximately 5 hours driven since, this robust gearbox features straight-cut gears, a heavy-duty clutch and limited slip differential.  This car rides on 993-based front and rear suspension with RSR-spec Bilstein struts and mono-ball spherical bushings.  A new custom fuel cell was installed in 2019, and the 993 engine is said to have been installed at 30k miles with approximately 10 hours of run time added since.  This GT1 is said to be highly competitive while remaining in excellent running order. The most recent compression and leak down test also yielded the following results:

  • Cyl #1: 160 psi, 4%
  • Cyl #2: 150 psi, 2%
  • Cyl #3: 160 psi, 4%
  • Cyl #4: 150 psi, 2%
  • Cyl #5: 170 psi, 5%
  • Cyl #6: 160 psi, 4%

The sale of this tribute will include service records, an extra body kit and wheelset, special gearbox fluid, racing logbooks and a featured 1998 Excellence article.  For any avid track enthusiast who has always admired the legendary 911 GT1, this nicely executed 993-based tribute offers a very unique opportunity.

@JPD On behalf of the seller:

    1. Yes, the front hood will be included with the extra fiberglass body kit.
    2. The extra set of wheels mentioned are the skinny transport wheels.
    3. No packaging will be included with the extra body kit.
    4. Yes, the car runs on regular 94 octane.
    5. The limited slip differential is in excellent working order. It is a Hewland and the seller believes it is at 80%.

not seeing the front hood in the photos of the extra f'glass body parts.
Is there an extra front hood?

  • JPD (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

    And to these questions:

Extra set of wheels...Is this an extra set of racing wheels in addition to the skinny wheels / tires mentioned?

Is there any crating / packaging for the extra fiberglass body and parts or are they all loose and to be packed / crated up for shipping?

i saw it mentioned that it is a stock 3.6, using 94 octane...is this correct?

LSD operating condition? LSD manufacturer? Is it also a Hewland? Any idea as to the LSD slip percent?

  • JPD (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

    Got it thanks.
Both my trailers (open and closed)are 102" however both have raised fenderwells above the trailer deck.
With the low ground clearance (even with tall/skinny tires and the wide body width it appears i would need another rig or a workaround (ramps) for the existing rig.

@JPD Thank you for your interest in my Race Car. We had the car out a few months ago to shoot the shifting process. The safety components, Fuel cell, safety belts and fire bottle are either new or in the case of the fuel cell the bladder was replaced. The tires will need to be replaced. The rim sizes are 16X14 in the rear and 16X11.5 in the front. The rims are the racing BBS wheels that can be configured in a larger diamenter by buying new or used rim halfs.
If your trailer is relitivly new it should be 102"wide. There is a set of "trailer Wheels and tires" that are both taller" and narrower.
I used a 2004 Toy hauler to transport it most of the time.
The brake calipers and rotors are stock 993 as light as the car is they both worked very well. The master cylinder's are Tilton with a adjustable bias control.
The shifting process is a dog leg pattern with first gear over down, the rest of the gears are in a normal H pattern. The car can be driven like a standard Porsche 5 speed. to take advantage of the clutch-less shifting the transmission needs to be at its normal operating temprature. The shifting is done rapidly as seen in the videos in the presentation.
I'm sorry I don t have the speed or final ratios in each gear. I have the information but its at home and I am working.

Does the car have any known snags?
Is there a punch list of what it needs before hitting the track?

  • JPD (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Trying to figure out if my present trailering setup would work for this width of this car....

    overall width of body? (inches)

width outside of tires with racing wheels and slicks?
    Front width?
    Rear width?

    width outside with skinny wheels/tires?
    front width?
    rear width?

Could you give us an idea as to how you handled the trailering of this car to / from track?

Extra set of wheels...Is this an extra set of racing wheels in addition to the skinny wheels / tires mentioned?

Racing wheels are 18" right. Hard to see from the photos.
What are the Front and rear tire sizes?

What are the brake calipers / rotors that are installed?
    Master cylinder?

Is there any crating / packaging for the extra fiberglass body and parts or are they all loose and to be packed / crated up for shipping?

i saw it mentioned that it is a stock 3.6, using 94 octane...is this correct?

how difficult is it to get on to shifting that transmission. It seems to be pretty touchy in the video, both up and downshifting?

Could you give a rough estimate of speed range (mph) for each gear?
    1st
    2nd
    3rd
    4th
    5th

    final drive ratio?

    thanks in advance!

@Supertec the motor is a basic stock 3.6 but the driver is heavily modified. The low weight and the great mechanical grip help

  • Supertec (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Ron, I know the answer but can you tell us some of the engine upgrades. With those track times, it must be making huge horse power. Race fuel? Red line?

@El_Chingon "This car seriously makes me want to sell other cars in order to make an honest and solid bid. Stay tuned"
The last time this car was up for sale, I was the high bidder. The water is nice, come on in.

  • RMistak (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@CJWRacing33 The weight is 1776lbs as seen on the scales in the small pictures. The seat is up to the new
The new owner. Lap times at willow low 1:20’s pre new paving.

  • RMistak (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@CJWRacing33 uprights are 993. the seat design is up to the new owner but remember becuas the seat is in the middle of the car there is Plenty of safety room for crash protection.
When we first built the car we did 1:25s. With the heavy bodywork My best times were in the low 1:20s On the old course before the repaving

  • CJWRacing33 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

what kind of lap times can this thing push around Big Willow ? I see your vids are at Streets...I remember seeing this a few years ago, maybe on RL?

I'd like to see a little more of a robust seat (like a GT4 clubsport) and some padding in the cockpit but I think at 1850 lbs you have a few free lbs to add before it detracts from the handling. What kind of hubs and uprights are on the car? 14" rears are WIIIIIIIIIDE

  • El_Chingon (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@Supertec this car seriously makes me want to sell other cars in order to make an honest and solid bid. Stay tuned

Just imagine this little gem with a 4.0 GT3 engine in it. I might even have a 4.0 engine in a box somewhere. I'm done racing but I might buy it just to do some laps or who knows, add a seat, change the tyres and a stereo and drive it on the street.
    I love this car.
