Representing the pinnacle of Citroën’s automotive innovation of the 1970s, the SM (reportedly short for Système Maserati) is a classic French sports car renowned for its avant-garde design, advanced technology, and impressive performance. This 1973 SD-series example is said to be one of just 600 units produced with a 3.0-liter engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. The subject of an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration and bare-metal refinish in silver, this example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.
Designed by Robert Opron, the SM presents a sleek and aerodynamic design characterized by a long low-slung body, fastback roofline, and rear fender skirts. Equipment includes US-specification headlights and turn signals, stainless-steel bumpers, a driver’s side mirror, rear fender skirts, and polished quad exhaust outlets. This example is said to have been refinished in its factory-specified shade of silver (AC095) in 2012 and the windshield is said to have been replaced as part of the refurbishment. It rides on 15” steel wheels with polished stainless-steel covers. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with photo documentation of the restoration.
The cockpit features brown leather upholstery which covers the front bucket seats, rear bench, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes Jaeger instrumentation, a suspension-height lever placed to the left of the driver’s seat, a push-button AM/FM radio, an air conditioning system, power windows, and an upgraded self-canceling turn signal borrowed from a later model SM. Additionally, the window regulators are said to have been rebuilt as part of the refurbishment. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.
Power is derived from a 3.0-liter V6 engine which was developed in collaboration with Maserati, a subsidiary of Citroën at the time, and three Weber two-barrel carburetors. As much as 170 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. Performance features include a hydropneumatic suspension system, self-centering power steering, an ANSA exhaust system, and four-wheel disc brakes with front inboard-mounted units. Service items prior to October 2022 are said to include replacements to the brake accumulator, hydraulic pump, suspension sphered, and height correctors. The seller also states that the timing chain has been replaced and a list of restoration items is provided in the gallery.
This sale will include a Canadian registration.

@fourheadlight TYVM. Although We can’t compare common apples with exotic Cherimoyas, I would say this SM is in Tip Top Condition. The DS received the Attention of regular restorers, this SM received the consideration and Full cares of the Owner himself, SM specialist, The SM Gourou of Canada, many compares to Jerry Hathaway of the north, founder of SM World in Cali.
The SM ( Sa Majesté / Her Majesty ) outruns de DS / ( Déesse / The Goddess) on ALL possible Aspect. A True Exotic Car. ( so called exotic cars Ferraris and Porsche of that Era are basic trucks ) compares to the sublimity of the SM.
SM is the Real Deal. Really Robust and Reliable, When DRIVEN to be fully appreciated, and to keep the problems at Bay.

@Alraf GoodMorning & Thanks for Asking. Here is a list of works done to restore former Glory of this SM and quite frankly to make it Even Better than New: buckleUp: note from Owner: Part 👆
I’m a Citroen owner since 1972 and an SM owner since 1973. I still own my original 74 3L SM which will be also sold on BAT.
When Citroen departed the NA market, many SM’s were abandoned in Canada. I have purchased many SM’s for parts and restorations. To date I have owned 10 SM’s.
I’m not a repair shop – Just a Citroen SM enthusiast for over 50 years. I perform all my work in a cramped double garage. This 3L SM is one of my three remaining SM’s.
Serial number 00SD0447 indicates a 3L engine size. One of 2619 built in 1973. This SD-series SM is one of just 600 3.0-liter examples built with a manual transmission. Purchased in Canada in 2010, I’m the second owner of this 73 SM. It is an accident and rust free car. Always winter stored, and driven to 65,000 miles only.
The car has a completely rust free chassis and body panels. I have completely disassembled the body and interior, and re assembled with all new (NOS) or used SM parts
and original nuts and bolts. This is one of the 5 SM restorations I have done over the years.
Restoration from the front bumper to the rear.
Remove front and rear bumpers and all SS (stainless Steel) trim and polished it.
Strip original AC095 paint. You can see on the restoration images the inner door and floor panels show the original AC 095 paint.
Current paint is the original formulation to the AC095 color . New paint job is 10 years old.
Rejuvenated all original rubber trim.
Removed radiator and all cooling hoses. Replaced with NOS ones. Installed flushed radiator
Replaced oil cooler and hoses.
Refurbished front light assembly.
Rebuilt dual electric radiator fan motors.
Removed and flushed heater core and installed rebuilt control valve.
Degreased all electrical harness connectors.
Fixed up all bulb sockets for proper ground etc. Installed LED light in the cluster
Replaced windshield with new SM unit from Pilkington for Classics.
Rebuilt AC airbox. Cleaned electric motor/blower.
Installed new vacuum hoses.
Installed new AC compressor
Repaired clock – yes it can be done.
Installed new headliner – I make my own.
Doors disassembled, and all moving parts chemically cleaned.
Window sliders and door locking mechanisms are like new.
Rebuilt both window motors, installed bras gear in the window lift unit
Re-chromed both door handles.
Gas tank removed, cleaned and inside of tank re lined.
New sending unit and filter on the pick up
New fuel pump installed
Suspension and Hydraulics Update:
New inner and outer boots on the drive shafts
Replaced height correctors
One new Ball joint
Lubricated all four front suspension arms (yes it can be done)
What mechanical work was done during restoration? How is the suspension components working?
