A landmark year for the Porsche 911, 1972 marked the debut of the Type 915 transmission, an enlarged 2.4-liter engine, and the unique external oil filler lid (Ölklappe), which is exclusive to the model year and highly sought after among collectors. This 1972 Porsche 911T Targa was refinished in Bahia Red over black upholstery and features an upgraded ANSA exhaust system. A California car from 1972 until 1998, it was acquired by the current owner in 2016 and is now being offered for auction by the selling dealer out of Canada.

Referred to as an “Ölklappe,” this 1972 example offers an external oil filler lid mounted behind the passenger door on the rear quarter panel. This example was reportedly refinished in Bahia Red from its original Olive (414) shade with a brushed stainless Targa bar and a black removable roof panel. Details include aluminum rocker and deco moldings, chrome trim, body-color headlight rings, a driver’s side mirror, and 15” Fuchs wheels. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the cabin is appointed with black upholstery with corduroy centers and matching carpets. Features include a four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, manual roll-up windows, a custom wooden shift knob, and an upgraded Pioneer head unit. The seller notes that while the air conditioning unit remains beneath the dashboard, the compressor and lines have been removed.

Power comes from a replacement 2.4-liter flat-six engine sourced from a 1973 Porsche 911T, delivering up to 140 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine is equipped with Weber carburetors and an aftermarket ANSA exhaust system. The seller highlights an oil change was performed, and the spark plugs, fuel tank, fuel lines, and fuel filter were replaced. Additional maintenance reportedly involved a valve adjustment, carburetor tuning, and replacement of the distributor cap and rotor, along with new ignition wires.

This sale will include a Canadian registration and a binder of maintenance records dating back to 1998.

The seller would like you to know: "This Ölklappe Targa has lived its first 26 years in Southern California and was owned by a University professor at USC who relocated to Canada in 1998. Car was only driven in the summertime since and was meticously maintained. Its second owner acquired it from the said professor and kept it from 2000 to 2016 before it was acquired by current dealer. It comes with a full binder of maintenance records, has a 100% rust free body, mechanicals that are 100% dry and is in a turn key condition with no outstanding maintenance necessary."
