This 1972 Porsche 911 Coupe has been restored and transformed in the style of a Porsche 911 S/T, a rare one-year-only competition model and forerunner to the legendary 1973 Carrera RS. The car was fitted with wide steel fenders, a custom lightweight interior, and an overhauled 2.7-liter engine along with suspension and braking upgrades. Accompanied by extensive documentation, this 911 S/T tribute is now being offered for auction out of the Wilson Collection in Florida.

This 911 was refinished in the current shade of green after being fitted with steel RSR fender flares and modified bumpers under prior ownership. Black Porsche lettering adorns the aluminum rear decklid along with matching Porsche logo stripes on each side. The front hood features a central fuel cap, rally lights, and rubber tie straps. Toyo Proxes tires are mounted on anodized RSR 16”x9” rear and 16”x8”  front Fuchs wheels. Some paint chips are noted on the bottom of the rockers and edges of the wheel wells as well as a bubble on the quarter panel, a crack in the paint near the external oil filler, and minor dents on the rear decklid.

The custom black leather and vinyl interior features GTS Classic bucket seats as well as lightweight RS-style door panels and carpeting. Other accessories include a 4-point roll bar, 917-style wood shift knob, Wevo short shifter, Avanti rally map light, Elysee rally stopwatches, Rennline pedals and footrest, and a functional A/C system.

This S/T tribute features a replacement magnesium-case 2.7-liter twin-plug flat-six engine estimated to produce as much as 220 HP based on its componentry. The transmission is a factory Type-911/01 reinforced dogleg 5-speed manual. The engine uses a 2.7-liter crankshaft with RS cams, .016 MFI stacks bored to RS specs, an MFI pump, a Marelli 12-plug distributor with dual plug heads, and Permatune electronic ignition. The suspension was enhanced with Elephant Racing quick-change spring plates and Rennline front strut tower aluminum support braces. Stopping power comes from a Zuffenhaus 2.8 RSR brake kit. The seller notes that the gearbox's first synchro is a little weak and may require attention.

Sale of this S/T Tribute will include a clean title, maintenance and restoration records, and a toolkit. An article featuring this car is available for reference, although the seller notes the engine has been changed since the time it was written.

    @eurocol in photo 161 the cracking is the paint shrinking / failing. There appears to be a thin layer of filler around the oilcap opening which was cut open when the car was built. It is all steel cunstruction on the quarter panels, fiberglass was not used. We don't have record as to what the green is nor do we know what color this car came off the factory line. I beleive it is viper green but don't quote me on that. As to swapping the 915, we are a private collection, we don't offer service or installs.

    Great car.
    In picture #161 what is the cracking cause by?
    Is it excessive filler or part of a fiberglass panel placed over the oil filler hole.
    Did it start out as an original '72 rear fender will oil flap?
    What is the actual name and code for the paint to help effect the repairs?

    Also what would your guys charge so supply and fit a correct 915 with LSD?

    @AtomicIndustry pictures were recently submitted to PCar, they should be posted soon, keep your eyes out for them. Basically:
    -rock chip at drivers rocker by the door
    -small dents on the decklid ( all could be Paintless Dent Remover) with the exception of a hairline crack shown in the picture
    -Paint spliting at the oil tank cap opening

    @theiii Plan would be to source a core 915 (7500 to 10000), make sure you determine what year 915 box it will be, have qualified shop (RS is certainly a top choice) rebuild it. Hold on tight as parts are significantly more expensive now. Drive the car as is while all this is going on. Drop car off for swap and pick up several days later ( assuming nothing else needs to be done, like halfshafts, converting speedo, new mounts, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and fixing all those “ while you’re doing this”). Not a difficult process at all!

    Hopefully the motor was built by Lyn Howe. He is local and did work for the Wilson Collection. He is very talented and one of the few on the East Coast that I would have do a motor for me.
    The 901 gearbox is great, but absolutely the wrong combination for this car. Was this just some gearbox hanging out on a shelf?? This would make me question what other shortcuts were taken.

    Very cool car. The lack of rear Minilites is a big oversite but we can forgive it for that. I generally don't like the idea of "tributes", and since this is so far removed from the real deal, if we treat is as nothing other than a well modified 72, then you won't be disappointed. I'll be keeping an eye on this. I have to ask, have you had this on the scales, do we know the weight?

    @theiii In the driving video they mention that the 1st gear synchro is weak and needs replacing.
    Again weird choice of gearbox, the 915 is a stronger box, and better suited to the extra power.
    So this is a built engine based on a 1974 911S engine.
    Any details and receipts on who did the engine build?
    Hopefully case savers were used...

    Love this. Seems though that the currently in vogue roof rack is out of period for this build. A rear deck rack would fit circa 70s.

    You could get an S/T from Porsche from 1970 until 1972. Narrow body, rear flares, or fully flared. GLWA
