Representing the top-range model of the Mercedes-Benz W108 luxury sedan, the 280SEL 4.5 was launched as a U.S.-exclusive model in 1971, featuring a 4.5-liter M117 V8 engine. This 1972 example is finished in Autumn Beige over a Cognac leather interior and is equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, air conditioning, wood dashboard trim, and a vintage Becker stereo. The car is said to have been owned in California until the seller’s purchase in 2021 and has since undergone extensive reconditioning including a new timing chain, valve adjustments, a re-coiled radiator, fuel system components, an electronic ignition conversion, a new battery, Bilstein shock absorbers, subframe mounts, a rebuilt steering box, and much more. This classic Mercedes-Benz is now being offered for auction out of New York.
The exterior was reportedly refinished in its original color of Autumn Beige under previous ownership. Equipment includes chrome bumpers, trim pieces, and wheel arch moldings, quad headlamps, dual polished mirrors, dual exhaust tips, and chrome 14” slotted steel wheels with body-colored hubcaps and Kumho whitewall tires (2020). The body side moldings and wheel arch trims were replaced under the seller’s ownership, and a replacement OEM windshield gasket is included in the sale. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with replacement Cognac leather upholstery, tan carpeting, and wood dashboard trim. Accessories include front bucket seats, seatback storage nets, front four-point seatbelts, a center console, a rear bench seat with a folding armrest, rear lap belts, tan coco floor mats, power windows, a black two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring, an air conditioning system, a heater, and a Becker Europa stereo. Two cracks are present on the dashboard, and a replacement dashboard pad is included in the sale. Refurbishment completed by the current owner includes a rebuilt instrument cluster, a new speedometer cable, A/C and heater control repairs, door lock repairs, new window switches, and a new trunk mat. Additionally, the driver's door window regulator was recently replaced.
Featuring Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, the 4.5-liter M117 V8 engine delivers up to 198 HP and 264 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 3-speed automatic transmission. The car comes equipped with power steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Under the seller’s ownership, the engine was serviced with a new timing chain, valve adjustments, spark plugs, ignition wires, a rebuilt distributor, a new cold start valve, a fuel injector wiring harness, rebuilt fuel injectors, a replacement fuel regulator and damper, a new fuel pump and filter, a new ECU, a re-coiled radiator, and an electronic ignition conversion. The suspension was overhauled with new Bilstein shocks, coil springs, a new center link, center shock, stabilizer bar bushings, and subframe mounts. The steering box was rebuilt, and the tie rod assemblies were replaced. Other recent service items include a new battery, under-hood fuse blocks, exhaust hangars, fan cover, hood insulation, a brake fluid flush, and a transmission kickdown module.
This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Recent significant mechanical service performed as itemized and receipted. The car was repainted by a previous owner along with interior replacement in original colors.”
