We are pleased to offer this 1972 Mercedes-Benz W108 280SE 4.5 finished in Anthracite Grey Metallic over a beige and brown interior. A variant of the W108/W109 full-size luxury sedan, the 280SE 4.5 was one of the top-range Mercedes-Benz models of its day and utilizes the short wheelbase W108 platform along with Mercedes' M117 V8 engine. This 1972 example has been with the current owner for the past six years and comes equipped with fuel injection, power locks, power windows, and disc brakes. Work performed under current ownership includes a tune-up, new engine mounts, and a full transmission reseal. The predecessor to the S-Class family, this classic W108 is now being offered for auction by its owner out of New York.
This 280SE comes finished in Anthracite Grey Metallic accented by a chrome grille, fender flares, moldings, bumpers. The body is believed to have been refinished its original color at some point during prior ownership and the seller reports several small cosmetic imperfections throughout the exterior, additional images are provided in the photo gallery. This W108 rides on a set of factory 14″ steel wheels featuring polished hubcaps with painted centers and GT Radial tires which were installed within the last eight months.
The cabin is trimmed in beige MB-Tex upholstery contrasted by a brown dashboard, carpeting, and decorative wood veneers. Amenities include power windows, air conditioning, and power door locks. The seller reports that there is a small crack in the dashboard, the headliner is separating towards the rear of the cabin, and the clock and air conditioner blower are currently inoperable.
Power comes from a 4.5L M117 V8 engine featuring Bosch fuel injection and an output of up to 195 HP and 278 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a three-speed automatic transmission. Stopping power comes from four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes, while double-wishbone front suspension and a stabilizer bar help to provide a supple and balanced ride. Under the care of the current owner, this W108 is said to have been treated to a full tune-up, installation of an upgraded ignition system, new engine mounts, and a complete reseal of the transmission. The seller notes that a small amount of fluid still seeps from the torque converter.
This sale will include a transferrable New York registration. An exceptional value for a classic Mercedes-Benz, this 280SE 4.5 represents a bygone era of quality and craftsmanship. Do not let this opportunity pass you by.
