Introduced as the brand’s halo car for the 1970 model year, the original Nissan Z-car, the Fairlady Z (S30) was sold in the U.S. as the Datsun 240Z until 1973. This 1972 example features a 2.4-liter inline-six engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and is finished in Blue Metallic over a white vinyl interior. This 240Z benefits from a refurbishment effort occurring under previous ownership, along with recent maintenance. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of South Carolina.
This Z has been refinished in its factory color of Blue Metallic (115) during a refurbishment effort in 2018, which also included the replacement of the weatherstripping and window seals. Equipment includes General Electric headlights, a driver’s side mirror, c-pillar mounted Z badges, polished window trim, a retractable antenna, and a single exhaust outlet. It rides on 14” steel wheels with five-spoke Z-branded covers wrapped in Ironman Radial RB-12 tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin was reupholstered in January 2019 in white vinyl and features bucket seats. During the 2019 refurbishment, the trim, dome light, carpets, seatbelts, door pulls, shifter, and emergency brake boots were replaced. Equipment includes a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, sound-deadening insulation, a center console, a locking glove compartment, an electric rear window defogger, manual window cranks, and a heater. The seller notes a Kenwood CD stereo, and speakers have been added.
Powered by an L24 2.4-liter inline 6-cylinder cast iron block engine with dual Hitachi SU-type carburetors, the 240Z sends up to 151 HP and 146 lb.-ft. of torque to its rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. Standard performance features include an independent suspension, a front stabilizer bar, and rack-and-pinion steering. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted front disc brakes, with rear drums. Service performed in November 2023 included cleaning and adjusting the carburetors,as well as changing the oil. Additionally, the spark plugs &wires were replaced, along with the distributor cap & rotor, fuel pump, and fuel filter. Spray-on bedliner material was applied to the undercarriage in March 2018.
