We are pleased to present this 1972 BMW 2002tii finished in Verona Red over a black interior. Created following Max Hoffman’s request for a sporting version of BMW’s “Neue Klasse'' 02 Series, the 2002 is widely regarded as the car that brought BMW to the forefront of the U.S. automotive market. The 2002tii (Touring Injection International) version debuted in 1971 with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, which offered a substantial increase in both performance and reliability. This 1972 example was acquired by the seller in 2019 from the second owner out of the San Francisco Bay Area who had the car garage kept for over 20 years. Having since received new leather upholstery and extensive servicing, this classic BMW 2002tii is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This 2002tii comes finished in Verona Red (024) and is said to have been completely refinished in its original color under prior ownership. Exterior details include dual side mirrors, early-style round taillights, a single polished exhaust outlet, and a chrome grille, window surrounds, and front and rear bumpers with overriders. This 2002tii was issued a branded title following damage reportedly caused by a pothole in the 1980s. The exterior is described to be in very good condition overall and the seller reports no rust concerns, additional images are provided in the gallery. The original 13” steel wheels wear BMW center caps and come dressed in new Kumho Solus all-season tires.
The cabin features newly reupholstered Recaro bucket seats in black leather with perforated inserts as well as new salt and pepper carpeting and black floor mats. A leather three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a 120-MPH speedometer and a 6400-RPM tachometer, as well as gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. An Alpine Bluetooth head unit has been fitted and paired with new speakers in the rear footwell. Some small cracks are depicted on the spokes of the steering wheel and the seller reports the original headliner and door panels to have been very well preserved.
Power is supplied by a 2.0L M10 inline 4-cylinder engine featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. As much as 130 HP and 131 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. Recent service and replacement parts include a new breather box, new brake pads and rotors, a new muffler, all-new engine hoses, new lights, gaskets, and replacement of the fuel injection linkages. An Optima Red Top AGM battery has been relocated to the trunk, and custom front and rear strut reinforcement bars have been fitted. Images of the undercarriage are provided in the gallery along with engine compression test results.
This sale will include a full-size spare wheel and a California salvage title. This nicely sorted BMW 2002tii presents a great opportunity for any classic European car enthusiast, do not miss out.

@rnak There was no damage on the scar when I purchased the car 2 years ago. All repair was done in 80's.
15 minutes from the end of an auction isn’t the time to start asking questions when the car was up here for a week.

Seller- Just looking for some clarity. Like your car but would like to know what actual documentation you have on the salvage and post salvage repairs. Was the front wheel pushed back? etc? Assuming it was in the 80s that would have ben the originally owner, did you speak to them or are you surmising?

@mayart Common and sense. If the repair was $2,000 and car value back then was $2k-$3K insurance company bought the car back. Does not mean was major issue.
This is matter of opinion.
Bid in the amount of $27,000
@seller nobody is saying there's an issue with the car now, but when an insurance company salvages a car there must have been extensive damage to the car. A pothole would not have damaged a car to a point of salvaging the title.
@rnak There is no issue with the car. Please see my comments in regards to the salvage title. Salvage title is not un common for car of this age .
Salvage title is from 80's when these cars didn't have much value.
HI Seller- Great color. Can you tell me more about the circumstances surrounding the pothole and salvage title? I am assuming the frame was bent enough for the insurance company to deem it salvage? Do you have any documentation regarding these circumstances?
Bid in the amount of $25,000
This looks like a tremendous deal anywhere near here! I’ve verbally signed onto buying a car in LA but this is nearer to me and very enticing! Salvage shmalvage, these cars used to be worth pennies to the dollar and weren’t very cared for back in the day. I wouldn’t be worried about it.
Bid in the amount of $19,500
Don’t let salvage title distract you . For classic cars is not un common have a salvage title.
This car extremely honest car and no stories .
I put this car against any other Tii that sell in $50k range . Reserve for the car adjusted for fair market value .
@mayart Absolutely!
Car is currently fully insured with Hagerty for value based on condition of the car .

Is the car roadworthy of a 5,000 mile road trip the day the auction closes?
Bid in the amount of $15,420
@obykinobi Unfortunately can't disclose the reserve at this time.
Just some guidance: If this car didn't have salvage title would be over $50K based on condition and recent sales of 2002's in market place. This car by far better than than lot of other 2002's I have seen and reserve is lot lower.
any idea on reserve?

There is no evidence of chassis issues and the car drives perfectly. In the 80's salvage title were pretty common considering classic cars didn't have not much value. I have seen far more worse cars with rust issues that don't have a salvage title.
Potential Bidders:
I see some questions and concerns around Salvage title which are valid. To be perfectly honest I owned several 2002's. This car is one of the best examples. To start: no rust since car kept indoors over the years and still the engine bay has the original factory color with matching engine , the headliner and door panels are original, Dash has never been removed from the car. I believe all the windows are still original. That indicates the car never had major damage. I seen far more worse 2002's
Do we know any details about the damage suffered by the “pothole incident “ that led to the salvage title? Is the chassis straight?
