The 914 was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen that culminated in an economical lightweight sports car with a removable Targa top and mid-mounted air-cooled engine. This 1971 example is said to have been a California car before making its way to South Carolina, where the seller acquired it approximately 11 years ago. Benefitting from a complete rotisserie restoration completed over the past 11 years, this 914 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of North Carolina.

Initially ordered in Light Ivory, this example was refinished in the current shade of green during the frame-off restoration. Details include a removable Targa top, pop-up headlights, front fog lights, and newly installed black bumper covers. The 15" wheels were mounted with new Nexin tires within the last 200 miles. Some minor paint imperfections are noted.

The cabin has been reupholstered with Buckskin-colored vinyl as part of the restoration. All electronics and gauges are said to be working properly apart from the radio which has been removed and will be included separately. The seller states the entire interior is constructed of replacement materials and a repaired crack is present in the dashboard as shown in the gallery.

Power comes from a 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine with carburetors in place of its original fuel injection system. The seller states the fuel pump was replaced with a new pump compatible with the carburetors, the distributor was changed to a centrifugal advance unit, and the original parts will be provided for the fuel pump and distributor.

The seller wants you to know:  “Thank you for visiting my auction.  I have owned this car for almost 11 years and have carefully returned it to useable condition.  This 914 did not suffer from the dreaded "honey hole" rust that most of them have.  The rust in this car came from a rear window that came unsealed and allowed rainwater to enter the cabin and collect behind the seats.  This eventually cause rust that had to be repaired.  All the rust was cut out and replaced with new panels and securely welded back together both inside and out.  The repairs were protected with Por15 treatment prior to repainting the car.  I am letting this project go because I am now 11 years older and a few pounds heavier than I was when I started this process.  It is just too difficult for me to get in and out of the car to enjoy it going forward.”
