Representing the final model year of the iconic W113 “Pagoda” SL-Class, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Light Ivory over brown MB-Tex upholstery. It derives power from a fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and features power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, 14” steel wheels, chrome bumpers, a removable hardtop, and a brown convertible roof. The car was acquired by the current owner out of Iowa in 2011 and underwent a major service in 2022 including valve adjustments, a new electronic distributor, spark plugs, thermostat, front brakes, a resealed fuel tank, and more. Accompanied by a toolkit, service records, and original books, this 280SL is now being offered for auction out of Florida.

The W113 SL-Class roadster was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show featuring a patented removable hardtop with a slightly concave roof which earned the car its “Pagoda” nickname. This example was refinished in its original color of Light Ivory (670) in 2011 along with the installation of a new brown convertible top and several rust and dent repairs to the body. The seller notes the front fenders have been replaced and some rust remains on the rear panel and right rear floor. Equipment includes a removable brown-painted hardtop, chrome bumpers, a driver’s side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, dual polished exhaust tips, and 14” steel wheels with painted hubcaps. The car rides on Cooper whitewall tires measuring 185/75 tires.

The cabin is appointed with brown MB-Tex upholstery, matching carpets, wood trim, and a body-colored dash fascia. Accessories include adjustable bucket seats, three-point seatbelts, a two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring, VDO gauges, an analog clock, an under-dash air conditioning system, and a Becker AM/FM radio. The seller notes the odometer is inaccurate, the air conditioning is nonfunctional, the radio works intermittently, and the speedometer cable was replaced in 1995.

Equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine delivers up to 180 HP and 193 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission. The car is equipped with power steering and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. Service in 2022 is said to have consisted of new front brake pads, calipers, and rotors, resealing the fuel tank and power steering pump, valve adjustments, installing an electronic distributor, replacing the spark plugs, thermostat, differential pinion seal, right rear axle seal, and fluids.

This sale will include owner’s books, a toolkit, service records, and a clean title.

Welcome to the auction, this is a very nice driver and as been well documented over the years. It had an old restoration many years ago, and we purchased the car it was then sold shortly after to the current owner. At that time he had us do a basic re-spray, replace the soft top and change the carpet. A basic tune up and service was then done to the vehicle. He had since serviced the vehicle and done a lot more over the years with a shop further north, closer to his home. Just about a month ago, he reached out and brought us the car on consignment. Great car with factory color and factory brown hard top. The data card was requested from the Classic Center a few days ago, and we will upload a photo of it as soon as we can. GLWB
