Developed to replace the iconic W198 and W121 roadsters, the W113 SL-Class debuted in 1963 and has gained recognition for its impeccable build quality and superb handling. The shape of its removable hardtop earned the W113 the “Pagoda” nickname. Refinished in white over a reupholstered red interior, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL has been fitted with an Anna Thom Engineering 6-speed manual transmission and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
This SL is said to have been completely refinished in white with a red convertible soft top and a removable black “Pagoda” hard top. It can be distinguished as a North American market car by its sealed beam headlights, chrome bumper guards, and side reflectors. Other details include a chrome windshield surround, a driver’s side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, dual tailpipes, and polished 14” slotted aluminum wheels with body-colored hubcaps and Vredestein tires from 2015 with approximately 90% tread remaining. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin was reupholstered in 2014 with red vinyl and color-coordinated upper and lower dashboard covers, door panels, pillars, and carpets. Details include a body-color dashboard and instrument panel, wood accents along the center console, a two-spoke steering wheel, VDO gauges, a Becker push-button stereo, and a locking glovebox. All gauges and accessories are said to be in proper working order.
Power is provided by a 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine factory equipped with Bosch fuel injection. The rear wheels are driven through a replacement Anna Thom Engineering 6-speed manual transmission. The factory automatic transmission is said to accompany the sale with several related components. The seller states this vehicle has been routinely serviced and there are no outstanding maintenance items.
This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, and a spare tire.
The seller would like you to know: “This 280 SL is an absolute beauty, and the 6-speed manual transmission completely changes the drive experience. Made in Poland, the Anna Thom transmissions are robust yet delightful when shifting through the gears.”

@Cozad1955 Yes the came off the factory floor in Tobacco brown with bamboo seats and brown carpet. Shortly after coming to the Wilson collection the color was changed to the 050 white, and the interior changed to the red you see in the photos. The car will also come with a digital copy of the factory Data Card. As to how it was refinished, the car was taken apart and repainted.
Was the car originally a color other than white. If so, how was the “refinish” done?
when you say "refinished in white" does that mean the original color was something else?

@Jimbo1907 I agree! :)
@MAPC The AC does works great. I will add a photo of a temp reading. It blows down to 43 degrees. Larry the owner painted the top black out of personal preference. I think you have great taste, it's a great color combo!
@Jimbo1907 I agree with you strategy of having the wheel covers match the body and not the top. My two prior SL's were white with black soft top and white pagoda, both with red interior....LOVE white with red.
Some 113 cars, especially early on, were offered in a two-tone color scheme in which the hardtop was a different color, and the hubcaps were finished to match the hardtop. While I like those cars, in this case, if you did it as factory, you'd have a white car, a dark red soft top, and black wheel covers, which would be a bit cluttered. I think this one looks best as presented. It's sort of a mix of styles, but the overall effect is pleasing.

Does the AC work?
I have owned two of these- a 230SL and a 280SL- both in this color combo. I miss them!
Curious as to why the top was painted black vs white to match the body?

@Jimbo1907 I agree. Changing the transmission changes the whole experience. A 6 speed was probably overkill, but the driving experience is non the less... amazing. I'm sure you're 265/6 five speed is just as great. Thank you for the compliment.
Regards
Interesting that Anna Thom use a Getrag 6-speed transmission. We did a similar conversion to my 280SL, but used a Getrag 265/6, which is a five-speed. The car is much better to drive with the Getrag box; mine was a four-speed from new, but the ratios were too far apart and the revs too high on the interstate. If you want to actually use your 113 Mercedes, the transmission conversion is the best single thing you can do to it. This white one looks like a nice car with the heavy lifting already done.
