Developed to replace the iconic W198 and W121, the W113 was launched in 1963 and has gained recognition for its impeccable build quality and superb handling. With its characteristic upright headlights and chrome grille, the front-end styling draws inspiration from its predecessor, the legendary 300SL Roadster. The shape of its removable hardtop also earned the W113 the “Pagoda” nickname. Refinished in white over black upholstery, this final-year 1971 280SL has been cared for by the same owner since 2007 and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia.
This example was refinished in its current shade of white, deviating from its reported factory finish of olive green. It is distinguished as a North American market example by its sealed beam headlights, chrome bumper guards, and side reflectors. Other details include a tan soft top, a body-color hard top, chrome bumpers and trim, a chrome windshield surround, a driver’s side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, dual tailpipes, and polished 14” slotted aluminum wheels with body-colored hubcaps. It rides on Sumitomo tires from 2006. The seller adds that the soft top was replaced in 2015, followed by a hard top restoration in 2022. Some paint imperfections throughout the exterior are noted along with small blemishes atop the front grille. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in black vinyl with matching door panels are carpeting. Amenities include three-point seatbelts, a locking glove box, roll-up windows, and an upgraded Sony radio, The seller adds that the factory air conditioning system was rebuilt by Buds Benz and installed by Newhall in 2016. Two speakers have been fitted along with a center console-mounted cup holder. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be in working order.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine comes factory-equipped with Bosch fuel injection, delivering power to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Stopping is provided by four-wheel disc brakes which are said to have been rebuilt in 2010. Other service items have included a rebuilt head in 2008 and a shift linkage replacement in 2023.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Owned since 2007, this car has been enjoyed immensely and now is ready for a new home."
