Up for auction at no reserve is this 1970 Porsche 914 finished in Black over a black leatherette interior. A joint effort between Porsche and Volkswagen, the 914 is a two-seater targa-top roadster powered by a mid-mounted air-cooled engine. Originally sold from Bob Smith Porsche Audi of Hollywood, California, this early 1970 example has been under the seller's care since 2009 and was refinished in the current shade of black, converted to carburetion, and equipped with a new transmission, clutch, and Euro-style bumpers. Currently showing approximately 2k miles on the 5-digit odometer, this 914 is said to have traveled just under 102k miles in total and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This 914 was refinished in the current shade of Black under the seller’s ownership. The car is said to have been originally delivered in White and refinished in Black Pearl once before under previous ownership. Some orange peel is noted in the finish, the chrome rear bumper has been sprayed silver, and two small corrosion holes can be seen in the trunk. Other minor cosmetic imperfections and signs of road-going wear are present throughout the exterior, additional images are provided in the photo gallery. Euro-style chrome bumpers have been installed, the sail panel vinyl covers have been replaced, and the 15” Pedrini alloy wheels have been finished in black and dressed in Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 tires.
Inside, you will find a black leatherette interior with a matching dashboard, carpets, and door panels. New carpeting is said to have been installed in 2012 and the targa top seals are reported to have been recently replaced. A few small imperfections have been noted by the seller including a tear in the driver seat stitching and a few small cracks on the dashboard towards the base of the windscreen. The fuel gauge and interior lights are said to have been refurbished under the current ownership along with the installation of a modern Sony radio. The radio is currently nonfunctional and the turn indicator return spring is missing.
This early 914 is powered by a 1.7L VW Type 4 flat-four engine that sends approximately 80 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The original fuel injection system has been replaced in favor of a carburetor. The seller reports a long list of service items addressed under their ownership including a new transmission, clutch assembly, pressure plate, shift linkage, short shift kit, and resurfaced brake rotors. The seller also recommends the idle be adjusted and notes that the car can take up to 10 seconds to start when cold.
This sale will include the original owner's manual and maintenance book, service records, and a branded salvage title. Now is your chance to get behind the wheel of a driver-grade Porsche 914 at no reserve, do not miss out.

Congrats! That was a great deal even for a good looking parts car that runs, assuming the engine is in good shape. It has a new transmission, clutch, shifter and more. What a fun car for a kid to learn to drive a shift or just go to coffee and cars on Saturday mornings, or Sunday afternoon drives. Worth every cent and a bunch more. I can't stack any more without selling something first.
Congratulations to the buyer. This appears to be a rally good deal.

Its a steal right now, wheres the action!
@9146max I dont know what the considerations are around posting the title, and I have reached out to the PCAR team yesterday. I can certainly DM it to you. Standby -
This will be interesting. This car was probably issued a salvage title when it wasn’t with much. I bought a 914 recently with a salvage title because a a nice size dent on the rear quarter in the 80s (no frame damage).
I can’t believe the low price on this. If I didn’t already have two 914s (one 914-6) and the other with a ‘84 3.2 dropped in) id be all over this example.
Can you post a photo of the salvage title? Thank you.
@CVS911SC The underbody side rail shots were added this morning. I'll try and grab some of the suspension too, but the angles might be a bit of a challenge.
@deusexmachina77 Yes thats right. Thats the only area where there is notable rust present. Its on the inside of the rear trunk behind the trunk latch. I would say there are two small holes smaller than a dime. The damage may have occurred there, thus allowing moisture to get in at some point in the last 50 years. In the last 10 years, the rust hasnt grown beyond the very small area.
Any chance to get some photos of the suspension and under body side rails etc? Thanks.

@whitblake can you clarify photo 73 and 74? Is that a hole? I looks a little crunchy. Guessing the rear end was where the damage might have been.
@deusexmachina77 Just submitted these photos per the last comment. The salvage title was from the previous owner and before digital records. I dont have the details, but when I bought the car (approx 2009) I had the body inspected and have done so many projects that its pretty well sorted now. Might need a little tune as it hasnt seen the shop in a year, but I drove it last weekend and had a blast.
@n_l Hi, Ive just submitted additional photos of the longs/jack points and hell hole. The lower has zero rust and there is just a very small bit of surface oxidation under the battery. Its all in really good shape.
Why the salvage title? Can we see undercarriage and jack points. Thanks.
Can you post any undercarriage pictures? What does the “hell hole” look like?

Still so underrated these cars, they handle like go-karts, and what a great example in all black murdered spec.
@pragonetti this would be an excellent candidate for an engine swap or track conversion! That was always my dream too, but it got away from me.
I love 914's so much. I have had the pleasure to drive a race car version a couple of times. They handle so well and are so predictable. If I wasn't in NYC I would consider buying this one. I love that stealth-out look!
@Nelson_Wells The top is snug and weather tight, I have replaced the rear rubber seals / stripping and havent had any issues w leaks. The front weather strip has two small tears (less than 2in) but they are length wise and havent leaked. The rear is a factory bumper, the only reason for the spray was that the chrome had chipped and I didnt have it redipped.
@Whitblake curious if that is a homemade rear bumper or simply spray painted. Let us know? any T top leaks? GLWS

Hi all, I've had the car for a fantastic 10+ years and its been a great weekend runner. Getting ready for a move so its time for someone else to enjoy it. Sad to see it go bc the sound and the feeling are so incredible. Sits low, smells great and corners like a beast. Great Sunday cruiser.
