Introduced as part of the W108/W109 S-Class lineup, the 280SEL debuted for the 1969 model year with an extended-wheelbase W108 platform powered by a fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six. This 1970 example is finished in Dark Olive over a Cognac leather upholstery and comes equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering, disc brakes, 14” steel wheels, chrome accents, electric windows, air conditioning, a Becker radio, and more. Showing just under 92k on the odometer, this W108 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Texas accompanied by a host of documentation.
The steel body is factory-finished in Dark Olive (291) and accented by a chrome grille, trim moldings, and bumpers. It rides on 14” steel wheels adorned with bright-finished hubcaps with body-color centers, wrapped in Hankook Kinergy ST tires with approximately 1.5k miles of use. The seller notes extremely minor paint blemishes and highlights the absence of dents or significant scratches. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin offers front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in Cognac leather upholstery, complemented by matching carpets and door panels. Amenities include Thermo King air conditioning, a heater, power windows, front headrests, central locking, and a Becker AM/FM radio. The seller notes cosmetic imperfections, including dashboard cracks, exposed piping on the driver’s seat, and a loose leather cover on the center console. While the speedometer exhibits slight bouncing, all other gauges and electronics are reported to be in proper working order with no warning lights illuminated.
Power comes from a 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine equipped with Bosch fuel injection, which delivers a factory-rated 180 HP and 193 lb.-ft of torque to rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission. Recent maintenance includes the replacement of front brake calipers and hoses, as well as updates in 2024 to the brake booster, master cylinder, rear calipers, rotors, pads, and hoses. Following the seller’s acquisition, the cooling system was overhauled, and additional work completed by International Foreign Automotive of El Paso, Texas, included valve adjustments, rebuilding the starter solenoid and alternator, and replacing the fuel pump, engine mounts, and spark plugs. The driveshaft coupler was replaced in 2023, while the transmission mounts and shifter bushings were addressed in 2024. The seller mentions minor oil fluid leaks.
This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.
