We are pleased to present this 1970 Mercedes Benz W113 280SL finished in Light Ivory over a red interior with wood accents. Developed to replace the iconic W198 and W121, the W113 was launched in 1963 and is renowned for its impeccable build quality and superb handling. With its characteristic upright headlights and chrome grille, the front-end styling draws inspiration from its predecessor, the legendary 300SL Roadster.  The shape of its removable hardtop also earned the W113 the “Pagoda” nickname.  This 1970 example underwent a comprehensive restoration through Terry Worick Restorations in 2015, with corresponding documentation showing an investment of nearly $100k.  The interior was reupholstered, the engine was resealed and refreshed, and more recently, the body was refinished in its original shade of Light Ivory. This SL comes equipped with power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, a 4-speed automatic transmission, and a 2.8L M130 inline-six engine. With approximately 1k miles driven since its restoration, this handsome 280SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

Within the last two months, this SL is reported to have been refinished in its factory specified color of Light Ivory (670).  The exterior features a newer black convertible soft top, a color-matched removable “Pagoda” hardtop, and Euro-style headlamps. Additional images of the exterior and undercarriage are provided in the photo gallery. This SL rides on factory 14″ chrome wheels wearing body-color hubcaps and BF Goodrich Touring tires.

Inside, the driver is greeted by a professionally reupholstered red leather interior with wood accents on the center console and upper dashboard. Notable features of this SL include a painted dashboard and instrument panel, a vintage Becker Europa AM/FM radio, black shoulder belts, and a set of black and red Coco floor mats. The seller also notes that an under-dash Vintage A/C system has been installed.

The M130 2.8L Bosch fuel-injected inline-six engine produced up to 180 HP when new. It sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission. An engine-out service and reseal was completed in 2015 at the time of the restoration, and corresponding records including additional receipts from the 1990s will be included with the sale. The seller notes that a major service was completed in April of 2021 including a re-cored radiator, a new kingpin, tie rod ends, and new wiring for the radiator fan. Some invoices are provided for reference in the photo gallery.

This sale will include an orignal service book, owner's manuals, toolkit, spare tire, restoration invocies, a removable "Pagoda" hardtop, and a clean title. If you are in search of a timless vintage roadster, this beautifully restored 280SL is not to be overlooked.

@Paulblouin Could you be more specific with regard to the missing panel and what area of the rocker panels do you need close ups of?

  • Naplesms (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Adoptagreatpet Different owners, one did the restoration but changed the color, the next wanted it back to the original color.

  • Naplesms (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Paulblouin I tried multiple times from different angles to show the dimples in the front fender to grill area but none would show in the pictures. They are very faint, probably because of the two repaints in the last 6 years.

New pics are certainly needed of the front fender indents. It’s a very big add if the fenders are original. There is a cover missing in the rear and the sides of the rocker pa els are not shown well. Interested but need a few questions answered .

I had this exact Sl. Unfortunately, it was the most difficult car to renovate that I have ever owned. I just didn’t do my due diligence. Looks like a beautiful car that is well sorted. I am just puzzled why an owner/s paint it twice over 6 years. It makes no sense especially consider the investment. Thank you.

@Jb423 There are three small indents each side between the headlight and grill opening, there are spot welds on the inner fenders but the car has been painted twice in the last 6 years, none would show in any pictures.

  • Jb423 (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Naplesms Yes. Inner fender. And the slight indents that would be next to the headlights

  • Naplesms (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Jb423 Would you care to clarify, what area's are you looking for? Indents by the headlights? Spot welds, do you mean on the inner fender?

  • Jb423 (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

I can’t see if the spot welds on the fenders are present. And the indents next to the headlights. Can you advise and provide a close up photo of those areas. Thank you.

@ozone When the restoration was done in 2015 the color was changed to Grey. When the previous owner had it painted back to the original Light Ivory he didn't want to take the whole interior back out and risk the newly rebuilt gauges and leather work being damaged.

Very nice restoration. Odd that the dash is gray, it should be the body color.
