Part of the second generation to bear the Stingray nameplate, this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette is powered by a desirable 427ci V8 paired with a heavy-duty M22 4-speed manual transmission. The car has spent several years in the San Francisco area and was acquired by the seller in 2015. The engine was reportedly rebuilt in 2011 and the car was later modified for light vintage racing by Vintage Exotics in Arizona. It has since competed in one vintage race under the seller’s ownership. This example is now being offered for auction by the seller out of California accompanied by a CSRG logbook.

Compared to its predecessor, the C3 Corvette introduced a longer, lower, and wider design featuring hideaway headlights, sculpted fender flares, a sharply pointed front end, and chrome bumpers. This example is finished in black and is believed to have been previously refinished. Exterior features include removable roof panels, front fender vents, new dual exhaust outlets, dual side mirrors, a custom L88-styled high-clearance hood, and steel wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The seller notes the driver’s side hood pin needs installation, and the headlights and windshield wipers are currently inoperable. New, uninstalled headlights are included in the sale. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the black cabin includes leather seats which are noted to exhibit some fitment issues. Additional equipment includes a welded-in roll bar with a battery kill switch, a three-spoke steering wheel, a Hurst shift knob, an Accusump switch mounted on the upper dashboard, and replacement carpets. A Holley Sniper EFI unit has been installed and is currently mounted off-center. The seller notes it should be repositioned above the steering column. The car was partially rewired during the EFI installation.

Beneath the hood lies a 427ci V8 engine. Chevrolet conservatively rated the legendary L88 powerplant’s output at 430 horsepower, though actual performance figures approached 550 HP due to aluminum cylinder heads, forged internals, solid lifters, a high-lift performance camshaft, an aluminum intake manifold, and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. This engine has not been dyno tested, so the actual horsepower is unknown.  Power is sent to the rear wheels through a heavy-duty Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission. Additional modifications include an aftermarket oil sump, oil pan, radiator, headers, and a fuel cell. During prior race preparation, the undercarriage received numerous new bolts and fittings, and the suspension was converted to an F41-style setup with Bilstein shocks. The seller has not verified the originality of the engine or transmission, although detailed images of the engine and related components are provided in the gallery. The alternator and battery were recently replaced.  The old carburetor and distributor will accompany the sale.

This sale will include a clean title, a CSRG logbook, and additional parts.

@fast356 Hello, Trying to clarify. Above you stated though actual performance figures approached 550 HP due to aluminum cylinder heads. Below you stated Iron heads. Can you please confirm which it is?

@C911- I am not with the car now, so can't look for it. For what its worth, the only exterior color that I see on the car, including the engine bay, is black.

Do you happen to have a picture of the trim tag? I'm curious if the original exterior color is black.

  • fast356 (seller) 3 weeks, 3 daysago

@C911- no, the driver’s seat can travel back the length of the sear rails.

How does the car run? Is there anything that the car could use to improve it?

  • fast356 (seller) 3 weeks, 4 daysago

@Fat- photos of the engine stamp are included for transparency. I don’t hold myself out as an expert, but believe they translate to Heavy Duty 427. Others may have a different interpretation and should rely on their knowledge. But, I don’t believe that they translate to L88 and the wording of the ad was not intended to claim that either the car or the engine is an original L88 model. And, yes, the heads are obviously iron and are not claimed to be aluminum.

  • Fatguppy 3 weeks, 5 daysago

Nice Corvette. Pretty sure it's not an L-88, but your description leads me to think that you are claiming that it is one? The engine code "IL" is actually the suffix code for a 1968 427 390HP Manual Trans Corvette. Those also look like cast iron heads, which would be correct on the base model engines. Do you have any supporting documentation to back up your L-88 claims?
