Produced from 1968 to 1975, the BMW 2002 was created at the request of American car importer Max Hoffman for a sportier version of the 02 Series to be sold in the U.S. This 1969 example was acquired by the seller out of Canada in 2018 and subsequently refurbished with bodywork, new Chamonix paint, Koni shocks, H&R springs, and a 5-speed manual gearbox sourced from a BMW E21. The car is powered by a replacement 2.0-liter M10 engine and features an upgraded distributor, an aluminum radiator, widened 13” steel wheels, black cloth Recaro bucket seats, a Nardi steering wheel, and a vintage Becker stereo. This classic BMW is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Oregon.

This 2002 was disassembled and fitted with a replacement nose and left front fender along with some other body repairs before being refinished in Chamonix (085) by Willhoit Auto Restoration of Long Beach, California in 2019. The exterior trim and weather seals were replaced, and the car is adorned with Italian-market turn signal assemblies, Euro-style bumperettes, a driver’s side mirror, and pop-out quarter windows. The 13” steel wheels were widened and powder-coated silver in 2021 along with a new set of Pirelli Cinturato 185/70 tires.

The blue vinyl features Recaro front bucket seats with cloth centers complemented by dark blue door panels and replacement grey carpeting. Accessories include a three-spoke wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, a wood gear knob, three-point seatbelts, a heater, analog VDO instrument dials, and a Becker Europa AM/FM stereo. Cracks are noted in the wooden shift knob and on the rear bench seat upholstery.

Power comes from a replacement 2.0-liter M10 inline-four engine sourced from a 1974 example and installed under prior ownership. Since 2020, the engine has been fitted with an aluminum radiator, an electric cooling fan, an upgraded distributor, a 90-amp alternator, and an E30-sourced starter. The rear wheels are driven through a replacement E21-sourced 5-speed manual transmission that was installed in 2021 along with a new clutch, throw-out bearing, flex disc, and shifter bushings. Koni shocks have been installed along with H&R springs, and an E21-sourced limited-slip differential is included in the sale. Service under current ownership has also included valve adjustments, a new fuel filter, an accessory drive belt, an oil change in 2022, and a coolant flush in 2023. The fuel filler has been moved to the trunk and the battery has been relocated under the rear seat. The seller notes some oil seepage and that the differential whines at high speeds.

This sale will include a collection of spare parts, service records, and a clean title.

@seller pictures of the body work and supporting documentation would of helped a lot.

I thought I answered about the paint job already. We only went down to bare metal in areas that needed metal work (wheel arches, side marker provisions). We also took out material where the bondo was too thick. We then used glasurit primer to go over the entire vehicle before prepping for paint

I moved the gas filler into the trunk to prevent gas from spilling onto the fresh paint job ( I lived in CA at the time where they use pumps that notoriously have a hard time with the old style gas tank necks. I still have the original pieces to put it back to stock

@seller can you answer the other questions as well ? Do you have any pics to share ?

Also, the hazard light switch is just tucked underneath the dashboard for now. I believe a hole could be made to make a provision for it, but it never bothered me

Hey there! The car was only brought to bare metal in areas that required repair (wheel arches, areas where bondo was thick from prior body work). The rest was primered over the old paint and sanded in preparation for paint

@ seller ( Larryscastle) Hi when the car received a repaint from blue to white colour do you have any pictures of the repaint ? Was original blue paint sanded down to bare metal before the white paint was applied or was it just painted on top of blue paint ?
I see that the vehicle dashboard is a 2 piece dash, not the original 3 piece dash that the car came with and I see that the hazard light switch is not right due to it being a 2 piece dash. Where is the hazard light switch located now ? Is there a reason why the gas tank filler has been moved in the trunk and can it be put back to original easily ?

Hi everyone! I’ve never sold anything on PCARMARKET before, but Adam and Dylan reached out to me after my auction for this car on BaT ended with a reserve not met. You’re welcome to check the old listing for lots of info about the vehicle, and I’d be happy to answer any questions you have. Let’s see if PCARMARKET can outdo BaT!!!
