We are very pleased to present this custom-built 1968 912 outlaw.  Created by automotive restorationist Matt Mariani, this Stinger 912R represents the first numbered Porsche offering under his newly launched “The R Institute” label.  Tastefully configured, this 912 boasts incredible lightness, ideal reliability, and perfectly balanced patina.  Originally sold from the legendary Brumos dealership, this 1968 912 remained in Florida until 2013 when it was acquired and completely rebuilt by The R Institute.  This drivable work of art shows just 500 break-in miles on its freshly built engine and is now being offered for auction by it's seller out of Haverford, PA.

Originally painted in Sepia Brown, this 912 has been refinished in Beige Grey (622), a very unique Porsche color.  The exterior of the car was deliberately made to look as if it could be a factory single stage paint job.  Some patina is preserved throughout the trim, helping to maintain this car’s intoxicating nostalgia.  The car still retains its original steel bumpers and doors while featuring exterior upgrades such as: custom lids, custom fenders by GT racing, H4 headlights, composite R door handles, vintage SEV fog lights, R lighting in the front/rear, and red-accented Gurney flaps on the rear to reduce lift while driving.  Currently installed are a set of bespoke racing wheels with the Stinger's original date, 6/68, stamped on forged centers which are structurally riveted to forged 6061 T6 aluminum barrels ($5k).  Original floor pans are retained indicating that this 912 likely had somewhat low miles prior to the build.

Built to be enjoyed and driven regularly, the tub was brought to bare steel and then sprayed with four medium wet coats of epoxy primer.  All tub cavities were inspected by camera before being carefully sprayed in zinc enriched epoxy primer; a unique step taken by The R Institute to ensure integrity for years to come.  This is a very important process according to The R Institute, adding that much of what was done to this 912 cannot be seen.

Inside, custom one-off ST inspired corduroy and perforated vinyl seats weigh in at a mere 13 lbs each.  This car retains its original ventilation system, all that is needed for heat is to install the stock European heat exchangers.  The car currently uses headers which are ideal for great exhaust flow.  Wipers, signals and switches all work as they should and the wire harness has been carefully inspected, cleaned and reinstalled.

Powered by a high compression 616/36 flat 4 coupled to its original 5-speed manual transmission, the Stinger weighs in at around 1700 pounds and drives like a true vintage Porsche.  The 1720cc motor runs brilliantly and makes great torque.  The case was cleaned, inspected, and then wrapped in plastic while the original forged crank was being turned, balanced, magnafluxed and heat treated.  New-style Carrillo rods were installed along with billet racing cylinders and custom 10.5:1 forged high compression pistons from JE with JE Proseal rings which were filed to perfect street/track gap.  Light wrist pins from JE were then fitted along with a Nuetek SX2 camshaft.  The heads and valvetrain were refreshed with new valves, springs and keepers.  Superior 1967 heads were used on this flat-four cylinder engine as well as an early 16-blade fan which doesn't cavitate at higher rpms like the later fans.  This engine also features a lightened and balanced flywheel, balanced rotating assembly, and enhanced engine lubrication.  Building a motor of this caliber today could easily cost upwards of $25k.

This build features a custom and completely rebuilt suspension.  It was first bead blasted and then painted with 3 wet coats of 2K gloss black PPG enamel with all bushing and wheel bearings replaced.  An aftermarket front sway bar has been fitted as this 912 came without stabilizer bars from the factory.  The original 5-speed transaxle was carefully inspected and found to "look like new" inside.  It was then thoroughly cleaned, had its seals replaced and was filled with fresh 80W90 gear oil.

The Stinger 912R was configured to offer the ultimate light and nimble driving experience.  The seller states that 70 lbs of thick undercoating was carefully removed over a period of two weeks, continuing to make this 912 one of the lightest on the planet.  The Stinger now makes about 30% more power over stock while weighing 30% less than a standard Porsche 912.

This 912 features the winning of the People's Choice Award at the annual Hershey swap meet, a testament to this car's innate beauty.  This car was also featured in Duck & Whale's latest Porsche culture magazine.  The sale will include all documentation regarding its build and the work performed as well as a clean title.

Unlike many Porsche cars for sale, this Porsche Outlaw is much better in person than in these photos and videos.
There are no issues with this car, it's ready to be enjoyed for many years. If it sells here we'll fit new Pagid brake pads, change the motor oil and filters and make sure it's spotless for the new owner.

Thanks to all who've bid and commented,

    Matthew Mariani

That is correct a 1968 912 outlaw with 3,2 did sell on BaT last year at $165,000 but it had $40k in Rothsport motor receipts !

A little over 1 day left everyone to bid on the coolest 912 on the planet. (So I'm told;) -------
Don't forget this Porsche #flat4 makes early #flat6 power (130bhp/137tq) but weighs 220 pounds less out back. The car weighs less than a 911R at 1700 pounds wet and handles incredibly. ??

As far as I know, I'm the only person who hand makes steel-alloy Porsche racing wheels in the USA. These wheels on the Stinger are custom made from its original date stamped KPZ wheels into 7R offset rears (ET 51) and 6Jx15s (ET 41)up front. They're as light as Fuchs and forged. They also feel great. My forged aluminum barrels are 3X stronger than the original steel alloy racing wheel's rolled aluminum barrels. I charge about $1000 and up per wheel for these as they take a lot of time and care to make. They're great wheels and I highly doubt anyone you meet at the local C&C will have a set!

In my opinion this car's worth every pennies of $40k just as a roller.
To have a motor of this caliber built now costs a minimum of $25k. 616 race motors trade hands for $35k.

@RoadWarrior thanks, it came in 2nd place though to an awesome yellow Speedster.

I’ve seen this car. It has an amazing presence. Pics don’t do it justice!

My first Porsxhe was a 1986 Carrera 3,2. I drove it for 14 years and well over 100k miles.

On a twisty road or on track tere is no way I could keep pace in my 3,2 with this little underdog Porsche bc it handles that well. It has SO MUCH GRIP, even with all terrain tires. I've tried really hard pushing it through the tightest turns on throttle and it just goes and the driver needs to hang on.

I cant stress enough how planted through turns this Porsche is. I've tried to break it free on power through hard corners and have not yet. I actually had to "twitch it" to try and get the rear out for one of the videos we took here. It will out handle most 911s and other vintage sports cars in my opinion. It's truly a Giant Killer !

Regarding the Porsche 616/36 motor and matching transaxle; the motor is very special and will never run hot no matter how hard it's pushed. The motor was built with extreme care, blueprinted and balanced has full-flow oil filtering (Shasta and Improved Racing) with thermostat regulated custom external loop oil cooler which is tucked in front of the right side rear wheel. I felt to save weight there was no need to run it all the way up front and back plus it's less vulnerable to being damaged. The 904 inspired hand formed aluminum scoop feeds air over the cooler. In the other left-side quarter behind the left rear wheel, houses the spin on WIX oil filter. This motor hold 50% more oil in its system than stock or about 6,5 quarts which is noted on the hand made aluminum specifications plate on the engine tin. This motor requires some time just like a 911 to warm up the oil.
The engine doghouse is custom painted to match the body of the car to let everyone know it's very special.
The valve covers being yellow will identify this motor as the Stinger's should it ever be parted from it SWB chassis.

The original 5-speed transaxle was inspected and found to look like new inside! I had a feeling it would when I drained the very old, think but still golden clear gear oil. Seals were replaced, castings cleaned, ground strap renewed, support bushes renewed and it shifts like new! This dogleg box shifts better than any 915 box I've tried. It's AFMSX gearing is perfect for auto cross or track use and on the interstate runs at 3500 rpm at 70mph which it's happy to do. It's very easy to add a Z 5th gear should we be asked to but I love the close ratio.

    Please Note:
The entire suspension and brake systems have been renewed. The calipers are original and have been restored, all brake lines and master are new and restored. I used all stock suspension bushings and stock bearings. The front stabilizer is aftermarket.
The torsion bars are original and repainted, the torsion tube was in excellent, straight condition and the interior prepped and zinc enriched epoxy primer'd. The lingitudinal cavities of the car were shot with zinc enriched primer as well as the cavities (even the tiny ones) of the suspension pan and rear crossmember shot with the same zinc enriched 2K epoxy primer.
*Zinc will migrate to any bare steel surface and attach itself in humid conditions.
Porsche Engineers learned this in the mid 60s.

@dno76 it was the sense I got while taking the car apart based on other indicators like ignition and door lock feel, switch feel etcetera. There is no way to know..you are correct. This is the perfect segue to state that all suspension bushings and all wheel bearings are new. There are some pics still that haven't been uploaded and these show engine machine work, interior of the transaxle, 3 piece modification for full flow oil filtering and others including prepping all engine sheet metal before finishing in 2K enamel.
This is a solid chassis and drivetrain. I stand behind this car. There is no bondo on this car (some lead) and no build primer was used. I intended it to be a focused track/outlaw but it is quite pretty in person.
Everything works, the HVAC system would just need heat exchangers installed for heat and demisting. I have the heat exchangers (great flowing Euro type) if the car sells. I didnt restore the heat exchangers but could for the buyer. The car has a header system at the moment.

Not sure how you deduce “low miles” from “original floor pan”??? Regardless, nice to know car has original floors.

@Acoupe they are 6Jx15 and 7Jx15s 6s: ET41, 7R's ET 52. 205/60s and 195/60 ATs. I could have fit more tire on the rears. The offset is very well suited for an unmodified SWB rear quarter. I hope this was helpful.- Matt
