This short-wheelbase 1968 Porsche 912 Coupe came factory-finished in special-order Signal Green paint over a black leatherette interior and is equipped with a 1,600cc flat-four engine paired with an optional 5-speed manual gearbox. The car was originally sold by Ely Volkswagen of Oakland, California, and was acquired by the current owner from European Collectibles of Cosa Mesa in 2021. It underwent refurbishment in recent years including a restoration of the interior and refreshed exterior brightwork. Under current ownership, this 912 also received a restored wooden steering wheel, a valve adjustment, brake service, and rebuilds of the Solex carburetors and original distributor. Accompanied by a stamped original service booklet and a Kardex showing matching engine numbers, this rare Signal Green 912 is now being offered for auction out of California.

This 912 Coupe was special-ordered in Signal Green (R6001) and is stated by the seller to be one of only three examples known to have come factory-finished in this striking color. It is equipped with H4 headlamps, chrome brightwork, a driver’s side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, pop-out rear quarter windows, a polished exhaust outlet, and chrome bumperettes with black rubber overriders. The car rides on 15” slotted steel wheels with chrome Porsche-crested hubcaps and 185/70 Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires. The seller indicates the chrome trim pieces were either polished or replaced during a recent refurbishment. The rear decklid has been repainted and the lower right front fender was stripped to bare metal and refinished for rust repair. As shown in the gallery, there are a few minor areas of corrosion under the passenger side rocker trim and at the bottom of one door. Minor scuff marks are also shown on some of the lower areas of the bodywork. Detailed images and paint meter readings are provided in the gallery.

The black leatherette interior was refurbished in 2020 with a restored dashboard and instrumentation, a new rear parcel shelf, door cards, carpeting, and reupholstered seats. The current owner installed a restored four-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, and the original black steering wheel is included in the sale. Accessories include aluminum dashboard trim, a heater, lap belts, rubber floor mats, and a vintage Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.

Factory-rated at 90 HP and 90 lb.-ft of torque, the air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine features dual Solex carburetors and an aftermarket Dansk muffler. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The carburetors and distributor were rebuilt under current ownership along with a valve adjustment, exhaust leak repair, brake service, and fluid changes. A leakdown and compression test shows between 175-180psi across all four cylinders with less than 10% leakdown. The seller adds that the engine case appears to have never been split and shows no signs of oil leaks. The engine case stamping and matching Kardex are provided in the galley.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a Kardex, a stamped service book, the original steering wheel, and a clean Alaska title.

The seller would like you to know: “What's not to love about this one? Short wheelbase 912 coupe with optional dog leg 5-speed rolling on dog dish steelies, all sorted out and ready to go. Oh, did I mention the color? SIGNAL GREEN... one of the rarest of the rare.”

If you have not scrolled down to the end of the gallery I would call your attention to the documents grouping beginning with photo #299. Of great importance on this car is that the stampings on the engine and transaxle match the factory Kardex and the owners service booklet both of which confirms that this is indeed a numbers matching car. Further the paint code tag (which has no indication of overspray or tampering) matches the Kardex "signalgrun" code 6001. Paint thickness gauge readings are also in the gallery and align with the two areas where paint has been applied as disclosed in the description.

This is a real deal car... bid with confidence.

Any bid is good. Thanks for the openers...

In Feb 2021 I sold a '69 4-speed White (color change) longhood 912 driver for $43,000. BaT set the reserve.

    In Aug 2022 I sold a '68 4-speed restored Tangerine 912 for $64,000. BaT set the reserve.

In July 2024 this '68 5-speed Signal Green 912 did not sell at $65,000. BaT set the reserve.

The reserve on this auction is lower than that from the July auction. The Tangerine car was a very nice car but it was not original paint, it did not have a 5-speed and although Tangerine is a great color it is a "two can" color on Rennbow whereas Signal Green is a "five can" color, evidencing that this mostly original paint car is among the rarest of the rare.

Add in that it is fully sorted and ready to drive it in my opinion offers the best of all worlds, a car that can be driven and enjoyed regularly without compromising its investment quality... that's something you seldom see except in a Porsche.

So, I guess the opening bid should be $65,000 or better if you have any serious interest.

@whatever123 I have not removed them to inspect but believe they are original to the car.

Greetings to all. Welcome to the auction for this very tidy and good to go '68 912.

I am representing the owner who has been a prolific Porsche collector for many years. An Alaska resident, he keeps his cars at his second home In La Jolla, CA. He is selling a few cars to make room for a home project; the other a 356D speedster has been sold privately.

This car is fully sorted and will make someone very happy.

Inspections are welcomed and encouraged but must be by appointment only. If so inclined let's get that scheduled because these auctions move fast. Use the contact seller button to arrange an inspection.

Yes, this car ran a few months ago on the "other guy's" site. It came up way short of reserve, ending lifelessly on a summer Saturday. Now it's back to find its next caretaker.
