Now available for auction is this 1968 Porsche 911L SWB presented in Silver Metallic over a custom Black leatherette interior with Houndstooth upholstered seats.  Completed on the Porsche assembly line on October 26th, 1968, this short wheelbase 911L is one of only 449 examples built for the U.S. market.  With some tasteful driver-oriented upgrades including Carrera chain tensioners, a sport exhaust system with SSI heat exchangers and new Koni shocks, this 911L is sure to satisfy an air-cooled driving enthusiast.  Having undergone some considerable maintenance items within the last 500 miles including a full rebuild of the original 902/1 gearbox, this 911L is said to remain in exceptional driving condition while currently residing with its seller in Tennessee.

This 911L is said to have been completely refinished in Silver Metallic under previous ownership in 2006.  The original color of the car is noted to have been Blood Orange and the seller indicates the finish to be in great shape.  The lower corner of the passenger side fender was blended in 2013 for cosmetic purposes and the underside of the car is stated to be free of rust, although some minor damage can be seen on the tub toward the front passenger side.  New H4 headlights were installed recently and this 911 retains its factory equipped Golde electric sunroof and pop-out rear quarter windows.  Custom Porsche side graphics have been installed along with professionally refinished 5.5x15” Fuchs wheels dressed in period-correct Vredestein tires.

Inside, the Black leatherette interior has been customized with Houndstooth upholstered GTS classics seats, a 917-style shift knob and rear seat delete storage box.  The wood steering wheel has been restored and the speedometer was rebuilt by North Hollywood.  A Becker radio is installed, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly except for the clock.  The factory Recaro seats with matching Elephant Hide upholstery will also be included with the sale.

This early 911 is equipped with an air cooled 2.0 L flat-six engine which is paired with the original number’s matching 902/1 4-speed manual gearbox.  The engine is a non-matching 901/14 but period-correct and only 219 units off from the original engine number listed on the COA.  Performance upgrades installed on this 911 include Carrera chain tensioners, an aftermarket sport muffler, SSI heat exchangers, PermaTune CDI ignition, Turbo tie rods and new Koni shocks.  Some noteworthy service items have also been performed recently including the following:

  • Rebuilt Gearbox (last 500 miles)
  • Weber Carburetors Restored (last 500 miles)
  • New Clutch
  • Resurface Flywheel/Pressure Plate
  • New Shifter Bushings
  • Replace Motor Mounts
  • New Alternator

Many older maintenance items are also included in the service records and the seller indicates this 911L to be in great running order.

This sale will be accompanied by a set of 2 keys, the original doorjamb paint code sticker, a jack and spare tire, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, extensive documentation and service records dating back to the 1980’s and the original Recaro seats.  If you are looking for an early driver-oriented Porsche 911, this lightly modified 911L SWB is certainly worth consideration.

  • Miles.S (seller) 4 yearsago

@bill_noon Thank you for the input and bids! I agree that this engine seems to be the original and typos are likely on the COA. It is documented to have been with the car for many many years. Please feel free to reach out with any further questions. -Miles

Many thanks @Miles.S for posting the additional photos. Stampings look perfect and so does the engine type number and sequential case number.

I am leaning towards thinking there was a typo in the records which happened more than most believe. It could also be a warranty replacement engine in period but, only the Porsche internal assembly records would show this and they are very hard to get.

I will be in touch shortly as I have some additional questions I will send to you directly regarding short-term storage and follow-on shipping as this would be for a friend on the East Coast.

    Cheers,

    Bill

Sorry, just to clarify, the gearbox which in the description says it’s a 4 speed yet the number 902/1 identifies it as a 5 speed which is most likely the case?

  • Miles.S (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

Photos of original seats have been submitted. Gorgeous Recaros with elephant hide

  • Miles.S (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

    @utopify thank you!
The original paint plate was saved due to not being the original color. Thought was that
If the car was ever painted back to the original color...the original plate could be installed. Best, Miles

  • utopify (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

Was the door jamb plate removed for paint (I assume)? Why not repair and re-rivet back in? IS that possible? The under hood vin plate up front looks fantastic, is it a reproduction, or just oddly in beautiful shape? I may have missed it and I apologize, but is the tool roll present? Fantastic driving video, over coffee this morning I watched it six times. Sip....ahhhh sip....Whoaa....GL!

@Bill_noon I have submitted photos of the engine number and type. The engine number is very close to the number listed on the COA. I would believe that this means the engine was possibly a warranty replacement or replaced in period. The engine has always been thought to be original to the car. Odd that it is so close. Thank you for the request! -Miles

Thank you for the comments and bids so far. Seller here. Wanted to introduce myself and welcome any questions or requests on this beautiful SWB 911. The car is great pleasure to drive. Very smooth and shifts well. Lots of records accompany the car and paint a clear history of the past 40 years. Tasteful modifications such as the RS style seats and Balsa 917 shift knob, add to the driving experience. This 911L is ready for a new home and just in time to be enjoyed in fall weather. It is available for immediate inspection Knoxville TN. Please reach out to me here or via the message seller button at the top. -Miles

  • Bill_Noon (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

I am loving the 917 Shift Knob... Seller, can you post photos of the engine number and engine type number.

    Many thanks,

    Bill
