This 1968 Porsche 911L Coupe was acquired as a project car by its seller in 2014 and was subject to a full custom restoration that was completed in 2022. It has been modified with 911R-style bodywork finished in the car’s original Tangerine paint color along with a custom black leather interior with plaid seat centers, a quilted lower dashboard, and a painted roll bar. The car also features a Carrera front brake and suspension setup, rear Koni shocks, a replacement 5-speed manual transaxle with a dogleg first gear, and a custom 2.8-liter engine built by Bruckmann Racing of El Cajon, California. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a collection of restoration records, this custom long-hood 911 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The exterior was refinished in its factory original color of Tangerine (6809) by SOS Customz of Oceanside, California, in April 2022 along with a protective coating for the wheel wells and undercarriage. It has been modified with fiberglass 911R-style bumpers and taillights as well as a fiberglass center-fill hood, fenders, and quarter panels. Other details include blue side stripes, hood tie-downs, a Talbot-style driver's side mirror, louvered rear quarter windows, lightweight Lexan side windows with leather straps, a windshield wiper delete, and a louvered steel decklid with twin mesh engine grilles. The car rides on 16” Fuchs-style wheels finished in satin black with Toyo Proxes R1R tires measuring 205/45 in front and 225/50 in the rear.

The interior has been completely redone with new black leather upholstery including a custom dash cover, a quilted lower dashboard, and OMP bucket seats with plaid centers and matching custom door panels. The cabin is lined with lightweight RS-style carpeting and features black aluminum Rennline floorboards, a Tangerine-painted instrument panel and roll bar, a three-spoke Sparco steering wheel, a wooden 917-style shift knob, and a polished “Outlaw” badge on the passenger side dashboard. The engine compartment and trunk are also lined with black quilted leather upholstery.

Power comes from a replacement flat-six engine which was rebuilt and enlarged to 2.8 liters by Bruckmann Racing in 2016. The engine is based on a 2.0-liter case from 1968 and features ported 2.7-liter heads, 94mm JE pistons and cylinders, a 2.0-liter crankshaft, JTG Daugherty Racing camshafts, an MSD ignition system, and Weber 46 carburetors with polished intake trumpets. The engine is paired with a custom fuel cell and an oil cooler sourced from a 1981 911SC. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement Type 911/01 5-speed manual transaxle with a dogleg first gear and a 215mm clutch. The front-end features disc brakes and suspension from a 1985 Carrera and the rear uses upgraded Koni shocks and vented rotors. The seller notes an engine service was completed by Makellos Classics in October 2021.

This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, restoration records, and a clean California title.

The seller would like you to know: “This 1968 Porsche 911L has an interesting history. It was originally assembled on November 13, 1967, and later acquired as a non-running project back in 2014. The seller embarked on a comprehensive restoration that was completed in April 2022. During this restoration, numerous modifications were made to transform this classic beauty into a truly unique vehicle.”

I’ve had 85 Porsches. One featured in Excellence, one on Jay Leno, one SEMA car for KONI, first Emory outlaw customer car-‘55 coupe with Polo& 901/5 & 994 main shaft Inc.
This is a very nice build But the interior and wheels would have to go for me. Thus , I was thinking if I got it at< 200K, I could make to my specks, GLWTA - on to the next one!

@TableOak The title is clean. The vehicle has never had it's title status changed to the sellers, or our knowledge.
As for the fiberglass panels & body conversion, it is consisted of parts from TRE Motorsports, Getty Design, and GT Racing.

@TableOak Great questions! We just uploaded a picture of the 911 on the scale from David Nutley Automotive here in San Diego. Weighed in at 2016 lbs and it had about 4-5 gallons of gas in it.

We do not have a dyno but compared to our freshly rebuilt stock 87' 3.2 Carrera in a 1970 911t, this 68' definitely feels faster and more torque. During our driving videos it pulls very hard and the brakes feel very strong. Steering is light but it grips in the corners. It's an absolute gem to drive!

Compared to most cars in 68' this car feels like a supercar. It's no wonder why early 911's are still beasts on the track compared to modern cars.

Title status is listed as "Clean" Can we please verify that it was not formerly (or currently) a branded or salvaged title at some point in its history, either in CA or in another state?

  • TableOak (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Which conversion kit company was used for the fiberglass panels? Can you tell us about any rust discovered prior to painting and how that was addressed? Are there any photos of rust repairs?

  • TableOak (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Any sense of basic stats and of performance? I'm not looking for absolute precision, but trying to get a sense of such things as: curb weight, torque, top speed, 0-60, 0-100, total horsepower, etc. Maybe any specs from the engine builder. Is this just a fun, spirited car, or does it have some credible performance numbers? Again, it doesn't have to be exact, but can you give us sort of a sense of the performance?

  • GarageCollectiveCo (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@franbar Please let your wife know that it's basically money in the bank with the prices of early air-cooled 911's continuing to be strong. Also, she should think about how many smiles you will create in your neighborhood when they see you both driving it. We can't find any reason why she would stop you from buying this car :)

  • GarageCollectiveCo (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@TableOak The intent was to build as lightweight as possible (sub 2000lbs dry) while still being street legal and a joy to drive. It styling pays homage to the Short Wheel Base 911R of the 60's with the fiberglass flares and round taillights. It's period spec at it's finest.

Doors align perfectly. The seals are all brand new that will soften more over time. A good firm German closing is what's needed. "Good and Tight" ;)

    Beautiful car, awesome color.

What was the intent of this build? A street legal hot rod, a track car, just a fun project? This year doesn't require a Smog certificate, but otherwise, Is the car street legal?

I seem to be picking up something with the driver's door not closing tightly or a misalignment issue. Any light you can shed on this?

@Jet2jeff2 the brand of paint is PPG, with a 2 stage paint being used (base, clear).
The build, including, but not limited to the engine, was completed April 2022.
Mileage published in the listing reflects the mileage on the vehicle after it's completion - so just over 1,200 miles on the build.
The lights all work, as shown in the gallery - hopefully you saw those amazing photos we published?!
Date codes on the tires are: FL:4614, FR: 0515, RL: 4614, & RR: 0515
As for the wipers & horn, the vehicle is pre-wired for these components, but they are currently not set up/installed.
We are consigning the vehicle on behalf of the seller, to whom the title is registered.
    Thanks for your questions!
