The original Maserati Quattroporte was built between 1963 and 1969 featuring a Tipo AM 107 V8 engine and Vingale bodywork designed by Pietro Frua. This 1967 Maserati Quattroporte 4200, chassis no. 1380, is one of only 55 first-generation Quattroportes to feature an optional 3-speed automatic transmission. It was delivered to its original owner in Indiana who kept the car until the early 1980s when it was sold to a woman in the local Maserati club. It is said to have spent about 25 years in storage before it was purchased by the current owner in 2014 and treated to a major restoration completed in 2022. This rare automatic Series II Quattroporte 4200 is now being offered for auction out of Florida accompanied by the original sales invoice and extensive documentation dating back to 1967.
The Quattroporte was Maserati’s first four-door sedan and features Vignale-constructed bodywork designed by Pietro Frua, which was inspired by the special 5000 GT model he designed for Prince Karim Aga Khan 1962. The steel unibody includes a vented hood, chrome bumpers, quad headlamps, a driver’s side mirror, and dual exhaust outlets. This example was refinished in the current combination of red paint with a contrasting black roof under the current ownership. The seller adds that the car was originally finished in silver and it has been kept in a climate-controlled environment since the restoration. It rides on chrome 16” wire spoke wheels with knockoff spinners and Blockey tires. A set of 5 original wheels is also included. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
Under current ownership, the interior was reupholstered by DEMVEL Style of West Palm Beach, Florida, in black leather with matching carpets and contrasting wood trim. Accessories include a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, a wood gear selector, power windows, air conditioning, Smiths instrumentation, an analog clock, front bucket seats, and a rear bench seat. The seller adds that the radio has been removed and the air conditioning system was updated in 2022.
This Maserati is equipped with an aluminum 4.1-liter Tipo AM 107 V8 engine featuring dual overhead camshafts and quadruple Weber carburetors. A factory-rated output of up to 260 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a BorgWarner 3-speed automatic transmission. The car features servo-assisted disc brakes, optional power steering, telescopic shock absorbers, double-wishbone coil front suspension, and a solid rear axle with a leaf spring. The seller indicates the fuel tank sending unit needs to be replaced. A collection of over 200 invoices dates back to 1967 and details the car’s maintenance history and recent refurbishment.
This sale will include the original sales invoice, ownership correspondence, sales literature, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, a set of original wheels, a Maserati Certificate of Authenticity, and a collection of parts that were removed during the restoration.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for checking out this auction. This is an amazing Maserati. The series I Quattroporte is an underrated luxury sedan. This particular example has an astounding amount of records detailing the history of the car. Its restoration was completed in 2022.”
