With a production span of over six decades, the original Volkswagen Beetle stands out with its iconic design, earning it a place as one of the most culturally significant automobiles ever made. This 1966 right-hand-drive example underwent refurbishment and customization in the United Kingdom before being imported to the U.S. and acquired by the seller in 2017. Under the hood lies a 2,276cc flat-four engine with dual Weber carburetors, along with MSD electronic ignition and a custom exhaust system. Refinished in grey over an interior with red leather TMI bucket seats, it also features a 4-speed manual transmission, polished 15” ERCO aluminum wheels, a custom roll bar, R.J.S. Racing Equipment four-point harnesses, a Memphis stereo system, and much more. This modified Beetle is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This Beetle is finished in grey, having undergone a repaint during previous ownership. Notable exterior features include T-Bar bumpers, Bosch headlights, dual side mirrors, running boards, a raised rear deck lid, a remote radio antenna, and a SAS Renn-Wagens hood emblem. It rides on polished 15” ERCO aluminum wheels, with Firestone F-560 tires at the front and Firestone Firehawk TZ100 tires at the rear. The seller mentions a ding in the right front fender and rust bubbles in the paint on the driver’s cowling.
Inside, the TMI bucket seats are upholstered in red leather with black suede inserts and ventilation grommets, complemented by matching door panels. Headrests are mounted to the harness bar, and Dynomat sound-deadening material lines the black carpets. The billet aluminum steering wheel boasts a carbon-style rim and frames a 90-mph speedometer, fuel level gauge, and dash-mounted 10k-rpm tachometer. Additional gauges for voltage, oil temperature, oil pressure, and cylinder head temperature are positioned below the dashboard. Other features include R.J.S. Racing Equipment four-point harnesses, a Gene Berg shifter, a custom roll bar, a roller accelerator pedal, aluminum pedal covers, and a Memphis Bluetooth stereo with amplifier and subwoofer. The rear seat has been removed, and the battery includes a safety cut-off switch and tender. The seller notes the horn is non-functional, but all other gauges and electronics are in working order.
The replacement air-cooled 2,276cc flat-four engine was installed under previous ownership and features dual Weber 48 carburetors that were adjusted in preparation for the sale. Equipped with high-compression 11.7:1 pistons, the engine requires high-octane fuel for optimal performance, transmitting power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. Enhancements include an electric fuel pump, MSD electronic ignition, high-amperage alternator, billet aluminum MST pulleys, polished velocity stacks, and a sidewinder-style exhaust system with compromised heat wrap. Additionally, it features a remote-mounted oil cooler with an electric fan, a line-lock system, and a lowered suspension with a front sway bar, adjustable dampening shock absorbers, and rear camber compensator kit. Braking power is provided by front discs and rear drums with dual brake cylinders. Furthermore, a lightened flywheel and transmission brace are installed, alongside welded gears and revised ratios in the transmission, and chromoly axles. Work undertaken before the sale also included carburetor adjustments and the installation of a new intake manifold gasket.
This sale will include a car cover, a battery charger, a 5-gallon drum C-12 Fuel, an electric transfer pump, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This 1966 Volkswagen Beetle is a right-hand-drive example that was refurbished and modified in the United Kingdom under prior ownership before being imported to the US and was acquired by the seller in 2017. It has always been garaged and well cared for. There aren't too many right-hand drives that are built to the caliber of this high-performance VW. I have enjoyed all of the compliments and thumbs up while driving this on the street and to the many car shows over the past 7 years. The new owner will fall in love with this ride!”
