The Porsche 912 was introduced alongside the 911 as an entry-level model sharing the same bodywork but equipped with a lightweight and easily maintained 1,600cc flat-four engine that provided superior weight distribution, handling, and fuel economy. This 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe is an early example finished in Sand Beige over a Black leatherette interior. It is said to have been ordered through the Tourist Delivery program at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart and was shipped back to California by its original owner where it remained for several decades. This 912 features a rare 5-gauge instrument cluster, optional seatbelts, a roof rack, and a 5-speed manual transaxle. Accompanied by a Kardex showing matching engine and transmission serial numbers, this 912 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Washington.
As an early 1966 model, this 912 can be distinguished from later examples by its chrome pushbutton door handles, offset rear decklid badge, thin rubber body moldings, and silver windshield wiper arms oriented to the passenger side. It came painted in Sand Beige (6607) from the factory and was refinished some years ago under prior ownership. Equipment includes chrome window surrounds, horn grilles, and headlight rings, a vintage chrome roof rack, an aftermarket decklid lock, a polished driver’s side mirror, a polished exhaust tip, a fender-mounted antenna, pop-out rear quarter windows, front vent windows, and chrome bumperettes with rubber overriders. The car rides on factory date-coded 15” slotted chrome wheels with Porsche-crested hubcaps. A spare wheel is also mounted in the trunk and stamped with a 1964 date code. The seller notes slight damage to the paint just above the rear bumper near the gap at the right rear quarter panel as well as a stone chip near the passenger-side headlight surround. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is lined with charcoal square weave carpeting and features black leatherette upholstery covering the seats, dashboard, and door panels. Accessories include a 5-gauge instrument cluster with a rare outside temperature indicator, brushed aluminum dashboard trim, a four-spoke steering wheel, a wooden Porsche-crested shift knob, optional lap belts, “912” embroidered floor mats, a heater, a locking glove box, and a vintage pushbutton radio. Some wear is noted on the original carpeting and the seller adds that the seat covers, dashboard, and headliner are also original to the car. All gauges, lights, and accessories are said to remain fully functional including the overhead dome lamp.
Derived from the 356SC, the 912’s air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine was the most powerful pushrod-type motor Porsche had ever produced. It delivers up to 90 HP to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. Stopping power comes from disc brakes at each corner. The seller notes that the Kardex shows matching engine and transmission numbers, and all four brake calipers were recently rebuilt by specialist Jack Morris.
This sale will include a spare tire, some documentation, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “In all the years I have been around these wonderful cars ( I started working for Porsche in 1978, yes that dates me) it has become more and more difficult to find "honest" and unmolested older Porsche's. This car is one of those honest 912's in fact, this car is one of the most honest early 912s I have seen in a very long time. The car is both rust and damage-free. The doors ping... if you know, you know. The car is just a bit cold-blooded (current temps here in Spokane are in the 20s at night) I just recently filled the car with non-ethanol premium fuel which certainly helps on a cold start. The car runs, drives, and shifts perfectly. There is no steering play, and the car tracks dead straight. Not a rattle or squeak in the car Clutch take-up is both chatter and slip-free. The car is a delight to drive. Approximately 9,000 total Porsche 912's were produced for the 1966 model year a very, very low number when compared to other manufacturers. Chevrolet, for example, produced 27,720 Corvettes alone. early 912' s are rare, nice, unmolested cars even more so. Inspections are welcomed gladly. Happy bidding and thanks for looking.”

@pcarmarket - I recognize it is difficult to monitor the comments in every auction. In the case of this auction I feel for the seller, who went through all the effort to prepare his car for auction. If I could suggest, maybe add a section in each listing that indicates seller is willing to accept one or multiples of the following:
- Seller is open to a buyer PPI at buyer expense
- Seller is open to 3rd party PPI at buyer expense
- Seller is open to a virtual PPI (ie: Zoom, etc)
If the seller isn’t open to any of the above then they should be prepared for whatever results they get.
The seller in this auction was clearly open to a PPI and did his best to respond to questions as he saw fit. Some chose not to accept those answers or request a PPI in any of the forms suggested above, however continued commenting for reasons and motives only they know.
Please consider above as it would differentiate your site from other auction sites. Serious buyers won’t take any issue with this.
How can you describe this car as rust and damage free? Photo 116 gives us a completely different story. While the damage may have been “fixed”. We can see that there’s a lot of potential for rust and filler under this current paint job.
@pcarmarket Absolutely, I understand, and couldn’t agree more. Just would’ve loved to bid on this one. Color is outstanding!!!
@Whatever123 we understand that you and the seller have a disagreement here, we will kindly ask that as the auction comes to a close NOT to use the comment section to have a quarrel. If you are interested in the car and have intention to bid, please use the contact seller and speak to the seller privately. Further dialogue here will have to be removed to be fair to the seler and other bidders. We appreciate your understanding.
@Whatever123 usually I like to keep quite but why are you still commenting ? Other than intentionally sabotage the auction, grow thicker skin dude this is an on line auction and all sellers are different. They don’t always have to accommodate your request. This is a Christmas holiday so we all have other things going on, in addition the listing of a vehicle’s timing is not always desirable to the seller. So what you don’t get the info you’re asking just don’t bid. How many 912 seller gives out compression numbers? Appears you just want to have your last words. All classic cars are not perfect and will need some sorting afterward, this one included but this one is beautiful and with full California history. This will will sell regardless. Please stop 🛑
@Lugano Yes, my questions were legit and would have gone far to instill confidence in bidders. There were ZERO pictures of the under side of the engine. The seller quickly stated he could provide 1000 pictures and it wouldn’t be enough. And he wanted to tell me to go Elon Musk, which if you saw Elon’s last interview, the seller was telling me F U. As I said the car looks nice, but I don’t believe it will come with any documentation. And the buyer should consider removing the front quarter panels to put rubber stripping between quarter panels and cowling. It appears there is none there currently.
Bid in the amount of $28,000
@Lugano W R O N G ! The man was accommodated! He asked for more information and photos and HE WAS ACCOMODATED! The ONLY thing I didn't provide was a photo of the nearly illegible repair order! I did provide what was done and the amount paid. Now then, what did I NOT PROVIDE AND Who owes the apology?
Ok boys and girls..... normally I'm at home with my family now. I'm at my shop to provide for a couple of late requests. Outside of pitting the car in the air ( I don't have a hoist) is there anything else anyone would care to see. It is snowing here so any additional driving is simply out of the question. Thanks
I agree with Whatever. I was following this car and preparing to bid. But my Porsche Sensei taught me that the most important part of this process is the Seller. This Seller berated a completely legit inquiry. It doesn’t mean that this 912 example isn’t all that he says it is. It just means the Seller didn’t help himself or whomever consigned the car. A simple apology was due.
@Cam07 no, none. Thanks.
@porscheklaus thank you. Is there any indication of rust within the inner fender well behind this area?
Cold start posted.
Cold start in just a moment. It is snowing here in Spokane, 31 degrees. I just posted a photo of engine temp by thermal gun. Shop is heated. Cold start video in just a moment...

@millstoneman Everything you’re requesting would be in the documents that are claimed to come with the car. I was scolded when asking for these items. I was told by posters get off my a**!and go look at car. I’m n Indiana, I’d rather seller would just post the documents online. There is a long post mentioning everything done to the car recently, mechanically that is. But no copy of the invoice. I really like this car. Would have loved to bid. There are some rubber trim pieces missing, but it’s all correctable. I’ll still say. Glwta seller!!
I know it's late in the auction, but is there any chance of more photos of the undercarriage, including front end, brake backing plates, etc? You claim the car was "refinished some years ago". Does that indicate it was repainted , touched up, or is the paint largely original? A cold start video would have been nice. Thank you.

Are there any additional photos of the small damage on the passenger side above the rear bumper?
This looks like a great example of a well loved and driven 912. I wish you the best of luck with the auction. As a 68 912 targa owner, I can tell you these are great momentum cars and are true gems to own! Happy holidays and best wishes, this 912 will make a great Christmas present for the next owner!!😎
@911Geezer agreed, the balance in the 912 makes it more fun, much more fun actually. This one is one of the few that just seems to "feel right". I think you understand exactly what I mean. It's a vault:)
@porscheklaus - Good luck, I hope you get what you want on this car. I love the 912, less power than the 911 but more engaging to drive. The lighter weight allows you to push these cars in the corners, once you are in synch with the car as a driver there is nothing like it, more fun than my 911’s.
One further comment, a 66 912 Coupe was sold Dec. 19th on another well known auction platform. That car appeared to be a complete non-running car that needs paint, interior, and who knows what on the drivetrain. It sold for $33k before buyer fees, demonstrating the value these cars are beginning to realize. Like I said, current bidding still well below the value of this car.
@911Geezer thank you.
Normally I would stay out of these discussion, however I have to say something in support of the seller. BTW I own several Porsche, including 912’s and the seller is presenting an honest car.. These are 50+ year only machines, if you are serious about buying get off your duff and do an in person inspection or pay someone to do it for you. The fact is the 912’s are becoming increasingly rare and finally getting attention from serious collectors. Many were used as parts cars for early 911’s because they were essentially the same car with the exception of the powertrain, hence the reason there are fewer and fewer of them. Top condition all original 912’s are well into the 6 figures now, I know I bought one. To those who keep slamming the seller you need to ask yourself what your motives are if you have not intention of entering the bidding. I have no intention of bidding, I’m here purely as enthusiast, and multiple Porsche owner watching the auction to see where the market is going - that is my intention. Good luck to the seller, this car is still well below it’s value.
@Epicmc Amen brother. Finally another poster who gets it. I suggest seller and his buddy who posted watch episode 0022 hosted by pcarmarket. It explains how sellers should treat bidders questions with respect, in order to have a successful auction. I’m willing to pay top dollar when a cars worth is proven through pictures and documentation. I asked seller twice for copies of documents that seller claims, comes with the car. He won’t post, everyone is supposed to just believe documents will come with sale. I took another sellers word on documents when I bought my 58 speedster. Documents never came. Pcarmarket would be wise to have a phone call with this seller.
Wow, tough crowd here. I’ve been burned before by taking someone’s word on a “all original car” and it was not. To protect all parties there’s Nothing wrong with “trust but verify” and documents and photos are the only way to do it as an on line format. GLWTA..
Mahalo Maui .
Wow, this is one of the nicest most honest 912’s I have seen! Someone is hopefully getting themselves an amazing Christmas gift; GLWTA!!
Sure would make one heck of a Christmas gift 🎁

@R-car4Me thanks Bob. I try... I REALLY try to be accommodating. I answered his questions, provided the info he wanted, took and uploaded the additional photos HE wanted but, there comes a point...well, he met that point. Thanks again for the kind words. I was thinking along the lines of a recent Elon Musk interview but, refrained 🙂, it was ALL I could do. .

@PorscheKlaus- I can't believe there are guys like Whatever123 on this site- we don't need their comments. They take up time for all of the people wanting to BUY a Porsche on PcarMarket- I sold a 1996 Midnight Blue Turbo with Beigh interior, and it had 22K miles- I didn't list it on this because of people just asking all kinds of a stupid question and never placing a bid! Sold it for over 300K and didn't have to put up with WE123 B__ Crap - and they never place a BID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should do well with this 912- I should be in this soon- I have seen your listing in the past, and they were all very nice cars.
Good Luck, my friend Rob
Hey, I'll buy it and promise not to be a PITA.
@Whatever123 I'm devastated.
@porscheklaus WOW, I simply asked for you to provide everyone the information you claim you have. To call it “crap” because I’m asking for something you claim to have is shocking. Respectfully, I will ask no further questions of you, and would NEVER BUY from you. I am a true collector, sold my gt3 on this platform. I have 3 Porsches purchased from sellers willing to disclose what they claim. Glwta anyway!
@Whatever123 with the utmost of respect, really, if you would care to have a PPI performed, at your cost, I can help. I already provided you with the recent work that was performed, the current owner of the car has had it just over a year, they did not obtain previous records. . And again, with respect, this auction is about as transparent as it bloody gets. Now then, either get on a plane, in your car or hire someone to inspect the car for you, I have nothing to hide. There is another auction site where this kind of crap is tolerated.
You write some documents are included. What are they? Pictures of them? When recent work was completed that you noted, did they do a leak down or compression test? Thanks again!!
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@nicec2s George, the only thing on the car that does not function is the outside temp gauge.
@porscheklaus - as the car sits today, are there any needs, items that need addressing? Do all instruments, systems and functions operate as they should? Beautiful example here.
thanks,
George

@Whatever123 Kardex and engine number photos did up load. I don't have a hoist, you'll have to trust me on the gearbox number, it is correct. There are still more photos that have yet to make it to the site ..... These guys are in New York, most likely tomorrow before you will see them. Thanks

I never would expect 1000 photos, but definitely photos like the entire underside of the engine. And definitely a photo of kardex and engine and tranny stamped numbers. How else will we know it’s matching??? Thank you.
@Whatever123 I can't get additional photos to upload. I have emailed them to pcar hopefully they can have them up soon.
@Whatever123 Please read the ad, 5 gauge and 5 speed car. There are clear photos of all 4 corners of the car, floor, engine etc.
I could put up a 1,000 photos and it would still not be enough :) ... I think there are plenty of photos to see that the car is about as good, rust free and honest as they get. I'll add a few more....an early Christmas gift :)
Are you still going to post the pic's of receipts/cardex? Also, can you get more pictures of the undercarriage? A arms/trailing arms. And engine pic's, heater boxes, valve covers, engine bay left and right? A better video going through all gears? Is this a 4 speed, or 5 speed? Sorry, wish I could see the car.
@Whatever123 repair order from 3/25/2021
Rebuild carbs
Recurve distributor
Replace shift bushings
Tune engine
Replace hood shocks
Replace brake hose, brake fluid res, bleed
Adjust e brakadjust throttle linkage
Replace throttle stop
Replace spring plate bushings
Replace left door window felt
$6,844.10
@Whatever123 can do.
@seller. Thanks for being involved in your auction. If you could show pics of receipts, that might help as well. Thanks!!
@Whatever123 I know there was a fairly large receipt with quite a bit of work performed within the last couple of years, I'll have to provide a list of repairs performed after I get to the office today and will be happy to do so. I seem to recall a repair bill for about $6,000. I did just have all 4 brake calipers rebuilt (last week) as they had begun to not release properly. I chose to have Jack Morris do the work rather than buy "imported" crap replacements.
The paintwork was done some time ago, so no, there is not a receipt, nor are there any repair orders for engine or transmission work. The engine runs perfectly, no smoke (at any time inclusive of cold start) smooth idle, runs to red line freely and does not leak. (minor drip every now and again as expected but, no "leaks") The gearbox shifts perfectly with none of the characteristic syncro issues of a typical 901 gearbox. Clutch take-up is both chatter and slip free. As stated above, "inspections are welcomed, gladly"
Do the receipts show any engine/ tranny rebuilds? Any Paint work? What exactly are the receipts? Thanks again
@wingless Believe it or not, it is an old alarm activation switch. it is not operational Some of the stuff they used to do back in the day.....
What is the offset lock cylinder under the engine grille?
@Bruce914 and? :)
Bid in the amount of $1,912
Beautiful car - would love to drive this along the coast back to California - but it's winter.
@Whatever123 I am a small boutique dealer here in Spokane and have the car on consignment. The car was an original tourist delivery and owned by its original buyer until sometime in about 2020-2021. The car was then sold to its current owner in 2022, two sisters who bought the car for their father who can unfortunately no longer drive.
Few service records exist as unfortunately many don't ask for them when acquiring vintage cars, I certainly do :)
I do not have a COA, I do have an original Kardex which is far better and provides for more detailed information than what Porsche provides on a COA today.
Thanks for the questions. It's basically a one owner car...
How long have you owned the car? How many owners? How much paperwork? COA? Thank you!
Thanks AZ !
My first Porsche was one just like this...only white with red interior. Bought it at Downtown Porsche in Los Angeles....$4800.00 out the door including tax and license. 5 gauge, 5 speed, AMFM radio. Bet this lovely car will do well. GLWTA!
additional detailed photos have been posted this morning. Thanks again for looking
Trying to load additional detailed photos of the 912 this morning.
@nicec2s Thanks George.
This one looks really nice and honest. GLWA.

Happy bidding and good luck
