Representing the first model year of Porsche’s most iconic sports car, this 911 Coupe is chassis no. 2470. It was manufactured at the Stuttgart factory on Weds Oct 6th, 1965, then was shipped to Harper Motors of Charlottesville where it was sold locally to a local programmer with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAQ). He drove the car regularly to his workplace before it was sold to a couple in 1992 who enjoyed the car for the next 20 years. The current owner purchased this 911 in 2013 and has made sympathetic restoration efforts while preserving the original patina when possible. Wearing its original combination of Polo Red and Black leatherette upholstery, it has been a successful concours participant, winning the "Best of 50th Anniversary Award - Porsche 911" in 2013 at the 29th Classics on the Green Concourse de Elegance. Accompanied by a Kardex and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming matching engine and transmission numbers, this early 911 is now being offered for auction out of Virginia.

The earliest Porsche 911s are distinguished by chromium-plated brightwork, chrome bumper overriders, and gold rear Porsche lettering with an angled “911” badge offset to the right of the decklid. Other early 911 characteristics include silver wiper arms parked on the right side of the windshield, a simpler pushbutton door handle design, and a hand-assembled decklid grille. This example was factory-finished in Polo Red (6602) and is said to have been repainted about 30 years ago. It rides on factory 15” slotted steel wheels with chrome Porsche-crested hubcaps.

Described to be mostly original with a natural patina, the Black leatherette interior features a wood-rimmed four-spoke steering wheel with matching trim across the dashboard. Accessories include door panel storage pockets and armrests, rubber floor mats, pop-out front and rear windows, folding rear seatbacks, lap belts, analog VDO gauges, a locking glovebox, and a Blaupunkt radio. The car also features a rare factory-optioned Webasto gas heater. All gauges and electrical functions are said to be working properly.

Power comes from an original 2.0-liter Type 901/01 flat-six engine that drives the rear wheels through a numbers-matching 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller indicates the original Solex P40I carburetors have been restored and updated by Paul Abbott of Performance Oriented, the Pierburg dual fuel pump was restored by Ed Fall at Vintagewerks, and the very unusual Nadella axles are both in excellent operating condition. The engine bay is also said to have been restored within the last 10 years. This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a Kardex, service records, and a clean title.

This sale will include a clean title, owner's manuals, sales literature, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

The seller would like you to know: “2470 has been a joy to own and drive. Having the opportunity to own and be the caretaker of it has been an experience I could not experience with any other car.”

@Whatever123 Paint code of 6602 gives it away as a 66. Polo Red was not offered as a 65 color, Porsche used same codes as 356 in 65, which were produced at same time on same line.

Hi Kirk, we have a few nose photos in the gallery starting with the #75 image. Also image 261. Is there something missing that you specifically need to see? I’ll try and get posted tonight.

The car owner has the original 4.5x15 matching date stamp wheels in storage and he replaced them on the car with four 4.5x15 date matched wheels that he found at a swap meet. The reason for replacement was the chrome on the original wheels was beginning to fail.
I will see if we can get the actual dates for both sets along with images.

Good morning @whatever123, the car was built in October 1965 and the first owner (Charlottesville VA) took possession in December 1965. The Virginia car title is 1965 and the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is listed as 1965.
Many folks in the early 911 car community would still say this car is a MY66 BY65 because Porsche would start their new model year cars after the summer vacation which took place in August.

  • Whatever123 (registered bidder) 4 months, 2 weeksago

Is this a 65? Like other poster mentioned, an October build should make this a 66. Please clarify. Do all rims have matching date stamp? Video's coming soon?

  • carsortium (seller) 4 months, 3 weeksago

The car was restored in 1994. The interior is original except for a dash top recovering that was done this year. Service records for the last 13 years are available for viewing. Images of some receipts start on image 294.

  • vivekpatel13 (registered bidder) 4 months, 3 weeksago

When was it last restored, parts replaced? Any service records available?

@Jimbo1907 Thanks its really is a beauty

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 4 months, 3 weeksago

Prettiest thing Porsche ever made. Not the fastest, etc, but the purity of line in the original design is just matchless.

  • prs356 4 months, 3 weeksago

Nice car. As it was manufactured in October 65 it is a MY 1966.
